——Comprehensive Reference for Recycled Liquid Crystal Polymers: Applications, Grades, Performance, and Colors (Including Quotation Sample Data as of 2026-09-11 and Description of Type I/II/III Dual Caliber)

1 Overview

1.1 What is Recycled LCP

LCP stands for Liquid Crystal Polymer. The mainstream industrial type is thermotropic LCP (TLC). Chemically, it is mainly composed of fully aromatic polyesters (or polyester-amides), prepared by melt polycondensation of rigid aromatic monomers such as p-hydroxybenzoic acid (HBA), terephthalic acid (TA), hydroquinone (HQ), and hydroxy naphthoic acid (HNA). Its molecular backbone is linearly connected by ester bonds through rigid aromatic units like benzene rings and naphthalene rings, forming a rigid rod-like structure. During melt shearing, the molecular chains spontaneously align along the flow direction, forming a nematic ordered structure. Upon cooling, the microfibrillar morphology is retained. Without the addition of glass fibers, it achieves a fiber-like self-reinforcing effect. Therefore, it is also referred to in industry as 'self-reinforcing plastic.' [Internet verification]

Recycled LCP refers to material that, during the LCP manufacturing process, comes from injection molding runner/sprue and electronic factory defective products or scrap. These materials are subjected to foreign matter removal, magnetic iron removal, crushing, cleaning, drying, extrusion, and re-pelletizing for reuse. For LCP precision micro-parts, the weight of the gate and runner often exceeds that of the product itself, resulting in a high waste rate. Runner/sprue material is the main source of recycled material, with sources concentrated in consumer electronics and automotive electronics OEM factories and their supporting injection molding plants. [Online verification/industry practice]

1.2 Core Values

Recycled LCP samples are about 20,000 yuan/ton, while virgin modified pellets on the spot market are about 56,000–73,000 yuan/ton, with recycled prices being about 28%–36% of virgin prices. They have economic and ESG value in directions such as cost reduction for precision micro-components in consumer electronics, closed-loop utilization of runner material in electronic contract manufacturing, and UL recycled material content certification (for example, BASF LAPEROS S475 has received additional UL recycled material content certification of 80%). Special attention is needed: key high-frequency/safety components such as SMT connectors do not use recycled material; recycled material is mainly used for non-critical components and mixed in proportion. [Industry practice/verified online]

1.3 Important distinction: Two numbering systems for types I/II/III (naming is reversed, be sure to pay attention)

The industry has two opposite numbering classification systems: Chinese materials and Japanese manufacturers generally number by "heat resistance from high to low" (Type I is high heat resistance); whereas ASTM numbers according to HDT value ranges, in which Type I actually represents low heat resistance. That is, Chinese/Japanese Type I roughly corresponds to ASTM Type III, and Japanese Type III corresponds to ASTM Type I, with both Type II roughly matching. When "Type I" appears in foreign trade or English materials, it must be interpreted in the context of the manufacturer and cannot be directly applied according to this table. [Verified online]

2 Application Areas and Specific Products

According to third-party research criteria, electronics and electrical account for more than 65% of LCP demand, and automobiles account for about 15%. The core engineering characteristics of LCP are: high temperature resistance (Type I can withstand lead-free reflow soldering with peak temperatures of 260–280°C), high flowability (can fill ultra-thin walls of 0.1–0.3 mm), intrinsic UL94 V-0 rating, low moisture absorption (about 0.02%), low dielectric loss; high anisotropy and lateral warpage are the main design constraints. [Online verification/industry practice]

2.1 Consumer Electronics (Table 2)

Consumer electronics is the main source area for LCP and its recycled materials, utilizing its ultra-thin wall filling, low dielectric loss, reflow soldering resistance, and dimensional stability.

Table 2 Specific Products and Material Selection Features in the Consumer Electronics Field

FiveUWB / Wi-Fi 6E/7 RF Front EndLow dielectric constant (low dielectric grades can reach 3.0), low loss (Df about 0.005 @1GHz)

2.2 Automotive Electronics (Table 3)

For automotive electronics, it requires long-term thermal aging resistance above 200°C, vibration resistance above 20g, and RTI of 220–240°C. Note: The blending window for recycled materials in automotive components needs to be confirmed according to the car manufacturer's specifications, and validation should be carried out according to automotive requirements under the IATF 16949 system.

2.3 5G Communication LED (Table 4)

For 5G, the direction is determined by its Dk/Df stability above the 40GHz frequency band; for LED brackets, the direction is determined by its inherent V-0 rating and solder resistance. In LCP film demand, approximately 57% is for antenna applications (2025), and over 72% of 5G millimeter-wave antenna modules rely on LCP film.

3 Industry Classification System

Recycled LCP currently follows GB/T 40006.1-2021 "Plastics — Recycled Plastics — Part 1: General Principles" — this series has no specific LCP volume as of September 2026 (volumes for PE, polyolefin mixtures, ABS, PET, PBT, PVC, PMMA, etc., already exist). The national standard for LCP molding plastics is GB/T 46830.1-2026 "Plastics — Liquid Crystal Polymer (LCP) Molding and Extrusion Materials — Part 1: Nomenclature System and Classification Basis," issued on May 25, 2026, and implemented on December 1, 2026; the classification is based on three characteristic properties: tensile strength, flexural modulus, and heat deflection temperature. In addition, a national standard for "Liquid Crystal Polymer (LCP) Films" is currently under development. [Online verification]

5 Color System

The two main colors are the natural color of virgin pellets (Natural, beige/ivory/light amber) and black (BK210P and other carbon black colorings); white/high-whiteness grades (such as Sumitomo SZ6709L) are used for LED brackets/reflective parts. After multiple thermal processes, recycled materials usually change from light beige to dark yellow/brown, while black recycled materials have smaller color differences but greater fluctuations in ash content/impurities. Color consistency is an important criterion for grading and sorting recycled LCP. [Online verification/industry practice]

Sample Description: This report's quotation sheet only indicates 'high-temperature liquid crystal material' at level one, without specifying color — because the sample quantity is only one, the color grading system is mainly based on industry common knowledge. For details, see Chapter 8 Pending Verification List.

Note: Different third-party reports show significant differences in the production capacity numbers for Sumitomo/Borouge/Celanese, due to the differences between 'resin polymerization capacity' and 'modified pellet capacity,' as well as differences in statistical scope between domestic Japan and including overseas bases. The specific numbers should be based on the official disclosures of the manufacturers, and the figures in third-party reports are pending verification. The global LCP market size is approximately USD 840 million (according to 24ChemicalResearch).

6.3 Price Comparison

Native spot (August–September 2026, China tax-included market price): Sumitomo E6008 about 62,500 RMB/ton; E4008 about 61,000–62,500 RMB/ton; Solvay E130i about 56,200 RMB/ton; E473i about 71,900–73,000 RMB/ton. Celanese has increased the price of Asian LCP/PCT by 0.25 USD/kg since June 2025, and by 0.50 USD/kg in April 2026. Recycled LCP samples are around 20,000 RMB/ton.

6.4 Policies and Regulations

UL94 V-0: LCP is inherently flame-retardant, and all grades hold the UL yellow card (such as Sumitomo E5008 yellow card number E249884). [Verified online]

RoHS / REACH: LCP is inherently halogen-free and flame-retardant, naturally complying with RoHS/REACH; REACH registration is required for export to the EU. [Industry Practice]

Automotive industry: Verification according to automotive standards under the IATF 16949 system requires meeting long-term thermal aging and vibration requirements above 200℃. [Industry practice]

Recycled Material Certification: Borealis LAPEROS S475 has received UL recycled material content 80% additional certification. [Online verification]

National Standards: GB/T 46830.1-2026 (implemented on 2026-12-01); GB/T 40006.1-2021 General rules apply to recycled LCP, but there is no specific volume for LCP. [Online verification]

Import regulation: The import of recycled plastic pellets must undergo solid waste identification, environmental protection testing, and provide a certificate of origin (FORM E/RCEP); after the 'waste ban,' the import of solid waste is prohibited, and recycled pellets must be qualified granules and traceable. [Online verification]

6.5 Emission Reduction Data

Currently, there is no exclusive, publicly authoritative LCA (life cycle carbon footprint) data specifically for LCP, so it is not appropriate to apply the emission reduction ratios of general engineering plastics or other varieties. It can be qualitatively stated that recycling LCP sprues/gates saves the energy consumption associated with virgin polymerization and monomer synthesis, and that LCP precision microcomponents have a high gate and runner scrap rate, so closed-loop utilization has carbon reduction potential; the specific reduction ratio needs to be verified. [Industry practice/to be verified]

6.6 Southeast Asia Import Channels and Material Source Background

Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines are hubs for electronics manufacturing services (EMS/ODM), undertaking production capacity for mobile phones, wearables, and automotive electronics injection molding. The LCP sprue/gating material generated in their precision injection molding workshops is a potential overseas source of recycled LCP. Borealis has a production base in Thailand. Under the China-ASEAN Free Trade Agreement (ACFTA) and the RCEP framework, over 90% of product trade enjoys zero tariffs, and tariff preferences can be accessed with a FORM E/RCEP certificate of origin. The China-Malaysia electronic information network for origin has been operational since June 2026. [Online verification]

To be verified: There is no LCP-specific customs trade data available — under HS 3908.90/3920/3926, LCP is mixed with PPS, PEEK, and other specialty engineering plastics, making it impossible to separately extract the import volume of recycled LCP; the local recycled LCP sorting/pelletizing capacity, grade purity, and whether it has undergone first-cycle thermal history in Southeast Asian countries remain uncertain and require on-site factory inspection and small-sample testing to confirm. [To be verified]
