北欧化工、SK(通过SSNC)也有份。

POP this industry, the water is deeper than you think. Even with the same name "polyolefin plasticizer," the price per ton can be twice as high, and its performance can last a whole winter. Some people sell POE as POP, some mix in ordinary LLDPE to pass off, and some even boldly add toughness to bags printed with foreign brands on recycled materials.
Every modifier knows that choosing the wrong toughening agent can cause the entire batch of modified material to collapse in low-temperature shock resistance. Today, let's stir up the POP pool.
1. What is POP, and who is in the top three?
POP Polyolefin Plastomer, an ethylene-α olefin copolymer made by metallocene catalysis. It is related to POE, but its density is slightly higher and more plastic-oriented. Its features are softness, toughness, transparency, and compatibility with polyolefins, making it popular as a toughening agent and flexible packaging film.
Foreign players in POP are highly concentrated globally, with the top three together accounting for over 60% of global sales. The top spot is Dow, with the AFFINITY series accounting for over 30% of global production; Second is Japan's Mitsui Chemicals, whose TAFMER series has a large base in Singapore; Third is South Korea's LG Chem. Nordic Chemicals and SK (via SSNC) also have a contribution. This track has not yet achieved commercial production domestically and relies entirely on imports. What exactly is the difference between
POP and POE? In short: both are ethylene-α olefin copolymers made of metallocene, differing in density and copolymer monomer ratio. The higher density, plastic-leaning end of POP has better modulus and stiffness; POE is softer, more elastic, and less dense. For toughening modification, the key is to "add some material and make PP/PE more resistant to impact lifting." Both POP and POE can do this, but if you choose the wrong grade, adding the same amount of parts can yield a significant difference.
2. What is POP sub-brand? Don't mix it with ordinary metallocene materials
POP sub-brand to build toughness. First, set the density to the corresponding level, align the melting fingers with the extrusion process, and test low-temperature flushing before ordering—don't skip prototyping and go straight to mass production. It's not a cheap product with high performance; it's the original factory virgin particle on the same metallocene polymer line from Dow and Mitsui, where the melting finger or density slightly deviates from the genuine grade at the factory. The four main sources remain the same: start-stop tail material, grade switching transition material, process fluctuation batch, and auxiliary line tail material.
The key is to understand: the molecular structure of the POP secondary brand is the same as the genuine brand, and it's still a metallocene primary particle. It's just that the melting finger and density tests showed a half-notch float. Remixed material is granulation from the corners of modified plants, which has a history of overheating; Recycled materials are even more so. POP materials come in both small and large packages. Don't treat ordinary metallocene LLDPE as POP—their density and modulus are on a different level.
Toughening bosses should remember one thing: toughening agents are the "heart" of the modified formula. Whether the heart beats steadily directly determines the low-temperature impact resistance of the entire batch. Common drift in secondary POP is in melting fingers and density. If the melting finger is weak, the extruder feed and dispersion completely change; If density is lower, toughening efficiency drops accordingly. So before getting on the car, melting finger density must be retested against your modified formula, not just by the original factory label on the bag.
3. Dow AFFINITY: A veteran player in metallocene
The protagonist Dow AFFINITY. Dow is a veteran player in metallocene polyolefins, with INSITE catalysis technology as its specialty. AFFINITY POP specializes in flexible packaging sealing and toughening layers. It has production bases in Spain, the United States, and Thailand.
AFFINITY characteristics of sub-brands: due to large output and many grades, sub-brands have stable sources. Common materials are melted fingers or densities in a certain range, fully sufficient for PP/PE toughening modification, flexible packaging films, and sealing layers, but cannot produce flagship films requiring extremely low density and ultra-high transparency.
4. Mitsui Chemicals TAFMER: narrow molecular weight distribution
Second is Mitsui Chemicals from Japan. TAFMER is their signature polyolefin elastomer/plastic body, with refined metallocene catalysis, a large base on Jurong Island, Singapore, and ongoing expansion. TAFMER has a solid reputation for automotive toughening and soft contact parts.
TAFMER sub-brand features stable batch size and narrow molecular weight distribution, suitable for toughening modification and soft parts requiring uniform mechanical properties. Its volume is not as large as Dow's, but its performance consistency is good.
5. LG Chem: Cost-performance route
Third Korean LG Chem. LG takes a full industry chain approach in polyolefins, while POP follows a cost-effective approach, specializing in automotive modification and packaging films. Its features are stable supply and more affordable prices than Dow Mitsui.
LG secondary brand is suitable for cost-sensitive general toughening and internal parts. But its performance in extreme low temperatures and ultra-high transparency still lags behind Dow AFFINITY.
6. Buying POP secondary brands to build toughness—these three pitfalls
First, don't mix POP and POE. POP has higher density and is more plastic, while POE is softer and more elastic. If you choose the wrong toughening level, low-temperature impact resistance will collapse.
Second, test the melting finger density against the modified formula. These are the two things that make secondary brands the most prone to floating; if the melting fingers are a bit weak, the flow when squeezed out completely changes.
Third, distinguish between original secondary brands and recycled materials. Regenerated POP performance is impressive; pull, inspect cross-section, and measure melt fingers, and you'll have a clear idea. Suggestion: Set density to the corresponding level, melt fingers align with extrusion process, low-temperature shock resistance sample testing before increasing volume.

7. Model Selection Tips
1. POP sub-brands are first divided into POP/POE types; don't choose the wrong toughness scenario.
2. Density blocking and melting fingers match processes, then low-temperature anti-impact sample application.
3. Distinguish between original sub-brand and recycled materials; performance will break as soon as the machine is installed.
4. Dow Mitsui LG is the main brand among the three brands; pay attention to other foreign brands.
5. Both small and large packaging are available, ordered according to the amount of modified extrusion line used.
8. Final thoughts
In Putian, there is a client in the automotive modification materials sector who had been using genuine POP as a toughening agent. Using a ton of it didn't reduce costs, so they switched through several batches of cheaper alternatives, but the low-temperature impact resistance of the modified PP didn't meet standards. One batch of bumper lower trim cracked when installed in winter, and the return rate once reached 9%. Later, they recalibrated the toughening formula according to the melt index and density range of Dow's AFFINITY sub-brand. This raised the low-temperature cantilever beam impact to above the qualification line, increasing the installation pass rate from 88% to 99%, and reducing the return rate to 0.3%, saving nearly 20% in cost for the toughening agent.
This is the accounting of checking melt index and density accurately. Ningbo Kolong New Materials Co., Ltd. has been handling imported sub-brands for many years, and manages quite a few similar automotive modification cases each year. Simply put, they help you measure the toughening range clearly before mass production.
