Correcting a cognitive misconception: Many people think that SEBS, as a secondary brand, is just "SBS with hydrogen added," just a name change. Those who work with TPE/TPR pellets and seals know that SEBS is made by hydrogenating the butadiene segment in the middle of SBS. Once the double bonds are gone, its weather resistance, heat resistance, and aging resistance all take a step up—if the hydrogenation is slightly insufficient, the resulting elastomer will powder and deform after being outdoors for half a year. Using batches that are not fully hydrogenated for seals and cables will result in hardening and cracking when exposed to sun in summer. For SEBS, before considering whether a secondary brand can be used, the first step is to check whether the hydrogenation is properly done.
Conclusion first: domestic SEBS secondary brands can be used, but hydrogenation saturation and melt index must be verified first. The main force in domestic SEBS industrialization is Sinopec Baling Petrochemical.
What is SEBS? The pattern of domestically produced hydrogenated styrene-butadiene-styrene elastomers
SEBS is a styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene block copolymer, obtained by hydrogenating the SBS (styrene-butadiene-styrene) middle block. Because the double bonds are hydrogenated, it is more weather-resistant, heat-resistant, ozone-resistant, and aging-resistant than SBS, while retaining the elasticity and processability of a thermoplastic elastomer. It is widely used in TPE/TPR granules, seals, household appliances, daily necessities, wire and cable sheaths, hot melt adhesives, and modified automotive interiors, serving as a main material for high-end elastomers and environmentally friendly toughening.
Domestic SEBS has long been dominated by foreign brands, with Baling Petrochemical being the main pioneer in hydrogenated SEBS in China. By industry perspective, Baling Petrochemical (Yueyang, now part of Sinopec's Hunan petrochemical system) has an annual SEBS capacity of 100,000 tons, ranking among the world's top in scale, with a domestic market share of nearly 60%; In Yueyang, Hainan, and Shanghai (production scheduled for 2025), Hunan, and Shanghai (production starts in 2025), Shanghai has added 50,000 tons of SEBS. Since 2006, it has produced and sold hundreds of thousands of tons of SEBS and is the builder of China's first 10,000-ton SEBS unit. Grades such as YH-503, YH-561, YH-533 are widely distributed in TPE pelletizing and hot melt rubber rings. Other new domestic entrants are still catching up. By the perspective of a wholly owned domestic main force, Baling Petrochemical is an unavoidable player.
SEBS sub-brand: Hydrogenation level and melt index are two critical points
SEBS secondary grade refers to batches from the original factory under the same grade system where some inspection indicators slightly deviate. For SEBS, the most common differences in secondary grades are concentrated in four aspects: insufficient hydrogenation saturation, melt index fluctuations, yellowish hue, and decreased mechanical strength.
Why are these points so critical? The weather and heat resistance of SEBS rely entirely on hydrogenation. If the degree of hydrogenation is insufficient and too many residual double bonds remain, it will age and powder outdoors and at high temperatures. Melt index fluctuations affect the oil-filling blending with PP/white oil; if the melt index is off, the hardness and flow of the TPE formulation will be inconsistent. When making outdoor seals and cables, the degree of hydrogenation isn’t a matter of “saving a bit,” it’s a matter of whether it will powder within six months or not.
The difference from recycled material: SEBS recycled material is made by crushing and remanufacturing TPE granules and seals, which have already undergone one thermal history, causing hydrogenated structure aging and loss of elasticity; SEBS secondary brand is original factory's virgin hydrogenated block particles, only with slight deviations in some indicators. For making TPE granules, using the secondary brand is a matter of 'whether the hydrogenation degree is sufficient,' whereas using recycled material is a matter of 'whether the outdoor powder has pulverized.'
Baling Petrochemical: Leading Domestic SEBS Scale
Baling Petrochemical, located in Yueyang, Hunan, is one of the leading lithium-based anionic polymerization bases in China. SEBS production has scaled from the country's first ten-thousand-ton level to a hundred-thousand-ton level, with technology and catalyst levels at the world's advanced standards. The grades cover medium to high molecular weights and various oil content levels, with long-term supply to downstream TPE pelletization, hot-melt adhesives, sealants, and cable manufacturers. As a central enterprise, batch management is standardized, with complete hydrogenation and mechanical data.
The characteristics of Baling SEBS secondary grade materials are: primarily domestically produced on a large scale, complete grade system, available in medium to high molecular weight and oil-filled grades; the secondary grades mainly have slight deviations in melt index and color, suitable for TPE/TPR granulation, general seals, household appliances and daily necessities, and hot melt adhesive blending. For long-term outdoor weather resistance and high-end cable insulation grades, the main brand is still recommended.
Applicable scenarios: TPE/TPR granulation, sealing parts, household appliances and daily necessities, wire and cable sheaths, hot melt adhesives, automobile interior modification.
SEBS Secondary Brand Pitfall Avoidance Guide
First, start with hydrogenation saturation. The weather resistance of SEBS depends entirely on its degree of hydrogenation. For secondary brands, first check for residual double bonds and aging data; products with insufficient hydrogenation should not be used outdoors or for high-temperature parts.
Second, the melt flow index should match the oil-filling formula. TPE granulation follows the melt flow index-based oil-filling ratio. The melt flow index of secondary brands fluctuates greatly. Conduct a small trial before changing materials, and don’t use the wrong batch directly for granulation.
Third, do not attach exterior parts that have a yellowish hue. Batches of SEBS sub-brand that are yellow should be made into transparent or light-colored TPE, as the color is uneven.
Fourth, secondary brands are used for long-term outdoor weather resistance and cable insulation levels. Components that require long-term outdoor use and electrical insulation must be genuine brands and retain certification; secondary brands are only used for general sealing and daily necessities.
Cologne Warehouse Spot | Domestic SEBS Granules Sealed Regularly Available
Cologne regularly stocks domestic SEBS secondary brand products in its Ningbo warehouse, with the main promoted brand being Sinopec Baling Petrochemical, the leading domestic SEBS supplier. The main grades include commonly used medium to high molecular weight and oil-filled grades such as YH-503, YH-561, and YH-533. Packaging is available in both large and small packages, with different molecular weights and oil-filled grades stored in separate areas.
Warehouse spot goods are usually between 2,000-5,000 tons: small bag secondary brand stock 300-600 tons, boxed secondary brand stock 150-300 tons, large bag material/ton bag material stock 1,500-4,100 tons.
Supply assurance through batch sample retention for traceability: Each batch of SEBS secondary grade material is sampled and documented. Data on hydrogen saturation, melt index, and mechanical strength are sent along with the goods. If the customer reviews past issues, Kolon can retrieve the corresponding batch samples and original test records, allowing problematic materials to be traced to specific batch numbers.
Selection Mnemonics and Case Studies
Which domestic SEBS secondary brands are reliable? Remember four sentences: check hydrogenation degree first, match melt index with oil content, avoid yellowing in exterior parts, and do not use secondary brands for outdoor insulation grade.
An elastomer factory in Xiangtan that produces TPE/TPR pellets and daily-use product handles used to rely on imported SEBS brand pellets, which were relatively expensive per ton. This year, they switched to the secondary brand of SEBS with medium-to-high molecular weight supplied by Kolon and Baling Petrochemical. They first tested small samples to adjust hydrogenation levels and melt flow index within the formulation range. After bulk oil-filled pelletizing, the TPE hardness, elasticity, and surface quality met the standards, and the finished products passed aging and hand-feel tests. The cost per ton of raw material dropped by nearly 1,900 yuan. The workshop manager said: 'Daily-use product handles aren't outdoor cable insulation parts. As long as the hydrogenation is sufficient and the MFI is stable, the domestic secondary brand can fully meet the requirements.'
