Calculate the cost account: Modification factories do toughening and modification for PP and PE, but they used imported polyolefin plastic (POP), which cost thousands per ton of domestic new material. Using dozens of tons of modified toughening material a month is a painful expense. But anyone who does automotive interiors or modifies toughens knows that POP's melting index and copolymer content are a bit lower, so the low-temperature impact resistance and surface gloss of modified material are a whole different level—if you add a wrong sub-brand to PP, the interior parts will crack in winter at low temperatures. Is this really worth it? First, you need to figure out the tricks of domestic POP.
Conclusion First: Domestic POP sub-brands can be used, but melting fingers and toughening efficiency must be tested first. Domestic POP industrialization has just broken through, and Wanhua Chemical is an unavoidable main force. What is
POP? The domestic polyolefin plastic body structure
POP metallocene polyolefin plastic body, which uses metallocene catalysts to copolymerize ethylene and α-olefin (such as octene), positioned between plastic and elastomer—slightly harder and more crystalline than POE elastomer, yet tougher than ordinary PE. It is transparent, flexible, and highly flexible, and highly durable. It is widely used in polyolefin toughening modification, packaging heat seal films, automotive interior TPO, cables, and daily necessities. It is a high-end material for PP/PE impact resistance modification and film heat sealing. It shares the same category as POE (polyolefin elastomers), with POP being plastic, POE elastic.
Domestic POP has long relied on imports, only breaking through in recent years. Wanhua Chemical is the first domestic enterprise with large-scale POP/POE industrialization capabilities—Penglai Phase I, a 200,000-ton-year POE unit, will be put into operation in 2024, the country's first large-scale independently developed polyolefin elastomer industrial unit, supporting α-olefin self-supply, with products directly supplied to photovoltaic film and modification customers; Its Ningbo base is also advancing a 10,000-ton POP unit. According to industry reports, by 2026, domestic POP production capacity will be about 100,000 tons, with Wanhua, Yanshan Petrochemical, and Maoming as the main producers. In terms of domestic wholly owned enterprises and industrialization as the main force, Wanhua Chemical is an unavoidable player; the others are still in pilot testing and the initial stage.
POP sub-brand: melting fingers and toughening efficiency are
POP core second-hand brands, which are batches within the same original grade system where some factory inspection indicators slightly deviate. For POP, the most common differences for sub-brands are concentrated in four items: melting index fluctuations, density deviation, reduced toughening efficiency, and yellowish hue.
Why are these key points? For POP, modified toughening requires the melting finger to determine the dispersion compatibility with the substrate PP/PE; incorrect melting fingers cause uneven toughening phase dispersion and low-temperature flushing resistance; Density and copolymer monomer content determine flexibility; if off, the surface gloss and low-temperature toughness of interior parts change. For modified factories, whether POP secondary brands can be used first is to measure melting fingers and toughening efficiency clearly.
Difference from recycled material: POP re-material is for modified parts and membrane crushing and remanufacturing, having already undergone a thermal history and reducing toughening efficiency; POP sub-brand is original original metallocene copolymer particles, with only slight deviations in some indicators. For PP toughening and modification, using sub-brands is a matter of "toughening efficiency enough," while reusing recycled material is a matter of "low-temperature brittle or not."
Wanhua Chemical: The main domestic polyolefin plastic body pioneer
Wanhua Chemical is a global leader in Yantai/Penglai, Shandong, and has recently focused on high-end new materials beyond its main polyurethane business. It independently develops metallocene catalysts and α-olefins support, building China's first large-scale POP/POE industrialized unit. Phase I with 200,000 tons of stable mass production is underway, phase II is under construction, supplying leading photovoltaic film customers and modification factories. Self-sufficient raw materials ensure consistent quality and are currently the main circulation force for domestic POP/POE.
Wanhua POP sub-brand materials are characterized by: domestic mainstay, standardized batch testing, complete melting finger and density records; Mainly toughening modified grades and film grades; Sub-brands mainly have melting fingers and slight chromatic deviations, suitable for PP/PE toughening modification, general automotive interiors, and packaging films. Photovoltaic film grade and high-end certified parts are still recommended as genuine products.
Applicable scenarios: PP/PE toughening modification, automotive interior TPO, packaging heat seal film, daily necessities, general cable modification.
POP Secondary Brand Pitfall Guide
First, test the melt index before modification. POP secondary brands have large melt index fluctuations; conduct a small test before changing materials to confirm compatibility with the PP/PE substrate. Don't force low melting index modification formulas on high melting second brands.
Second, toughening efficiency is key. Toughening modification should be based on low-temperature ball drop and cantilever beam impact. Test these first for secondary brands; avoid stress-bearing interior parts if gear drops.
Third, distinguish between POP and POE. POP is slightly harder due to plasticity, while POE is softer and more elastic. If you use the wrong material for the same door, the overall modification formula needs to be recaligned.
Fourth, do not use secondary brands for photovoltaic film and high-end certified parts. High-end applications such as photovoltaic film must be genuine and certified; secondary brands are only used for general modification and general products.

Selection tips and cases
Don't be fooled by domestic POP sub-brands? Remember these four points: test the melting index before modification, focus toughening efficiency, distinguish between POP and POE, and avoid sub-brand high-end photovoltaic parts.
Zhuzhou is a modification factory specializing in automotive PP modified interior parts. Previously, they used imported POP brand for toughening PP, which was expensive per ton. This year, they switched to Cologne-supplied Wanhua Chemical POP sub-brand toughening modification grade. First, small samples were used to test melting fingers and low-temperature impact within the formula. After batch modification, the interior parts' low-temperature cantilever beam impact and surface gloss met standards. The finished product passed automotive-grade low-temperature embrittlement testing, reducing raw material costs by nearly 2,200 yuan per ton. The boss said: Ordinary interior parts aren't photovoltaic adhesive films; melting fingers are sufficient and toughening is stable. Domestic sub-brands can fully compete
