Old Sun opened a transparent parts injection molding factory in Dongguan, specializing in monitor panels and transparent water tanks. Last month, a home appliance client switched transparent parts from SMMA to PC. The warehouse had a batch of INEOS styrene-collar NAS 21, NAS 30, NAS 90, and several bags of Chimei ACRYSTEX that slept on the pallet for over three months. The bag ends got dusty because the workshop wasn't clean enough, and the money still had the words "stock materials" on the ledger—basically, dead money lying on the account.
If a customer replaces materials, you can negotiate again; if an order is cut, you can take it again, but that pile of SMMA in your warehouse won't just grow and disappear on its own.
Obsolete materials aren't assets, they're liabilities lying on the books.
SMMA this material, scientifically called styrene-methyl methacrylate copolymer, is mainly known for its "transparency." It's better transparent than ordinary PS and easier to process than PMMA, and it's used for light guide plates, transparent water tanks, and monitor panels. But transparent materials are delicate—when they absorb moisture, they mist and have silver threads, just like glass. If you don't dry them and just use them, the finished parts are all matte. What's even more troublesome is that NAS 21, 30, and 90 have different fluidity and heat resistance, and mixing them results in poor light uniformity. If you don't understand grading, you can get dust on transparent particles and sell them as optical grade. The seller will just give you the standard price, and the good parts will be sold at a junk price.
SMMA sitting there won't appreciate in value; it will only slowly absorb moisture and fog up and drop in value.
Let me tell the truth: Old Sun once found a scrap goods dealer who drove a small truck, circled the warehouse twice, and immediately said, "This grain is foggy, dusty, and mixed. I'll calculate the consolidated price for you." Old Sun thought about quickly making room and agreed. But after weighing, the other party started picking bags again—one bag was dirty, that had a smudged label, and they cut another 300 per ton. Old Sun was annoyed, but the goods were already loaded, so what could he do?
The wholesaler's calculations were even more precise than your accountant's—picking out good materials and charging them as defective products, returning dirty materials as freight charges. Honestly, they're not making money from scrap, but money from things you don't know about the trade.
The vendor's quotation sheet is like a weather forecast—just take it at a glance before you leave, don't take it seriously.
Cologne New Materials follows a terminal digestion approach for SMMA recycling, not relying on resale to make a price difference. Mainstream optical grades like NAS 21, NAS 30, NAS 90, and ACRYSTEX are still used by downstream transparent parts, light guide plates, and home appliance factories. After grading them, they are taken out directly without inventory pressure. We don't pick out batches of miscellaneous, slightly misty, or dusty materials—they go into Cologne's own modified formula and digest them, just like mixing Chinese medicine. If the flow of this ingredient is slightly off, just add another ingredient to make up for it.
Pricing isn't one-size-fits-all. Grades by light transmittance, flowability, appearance, moisture absorption, optical grade, good price, slightly foggy ones as modified grade, and price differences are displayed on the table. Plus, with our own production capacity and long-term customers as backup, quotes don't fluctuate wildly with the market. When prices rise, they chase after you; when prices drop, they ignore calls. We still pay what we ow .
Good materials aren't afraid of not being picked up; what's scary is selling good materials as scrap.
Five-step cooperation process: material submission, graded evaluation, on-site pickup, deduction of payment, settlement and invoice. Old Sun's batch of materials went just like this—he took a few photos and sent them with grades and about four tons. After appraisal, we quoted a price and scheduled a time for on-site weighing. After the goods were brought back, the recycling payments were directly used to offset the next month's purchase of KONICE modified plastics, which was about half. It means the warehouse was cleared, the cash was returned, and the new materials arrived at the factory. After the trip, he told me that if I had known this would have been handled two years earlier.
The essence of recycling is not selling scrap materials, but turning dead money into working money.
Recyclable SMMA covers mainstream optical grades such as INEOS Styrene-Collar NAS 21, NAS 30, NAS 90, LG Chem SMMA series, Chimei ACRYSTEX, etc. Other brand grades are subject to physical appraisal. In terms of form, we collect: obsolete original packaging (whole bags or loose bags are fine), transparent sprue material, gate material, offcuts, defective transparent parts, and inventory scraps. Optical grade and regular grade are reported separately, with separate explanations for those with dust or oil.
Three common misconceptions, a reminder for you—
"Is recycling just selling cheaply?" "The truth is selling by grade and grade; good materials can sell at good prices, and mixed materials get underpriced."
"Waiting for prices to rise?" "The truth is that SMMA will only absorb moisture, fog up, and drop in value, and after it gets dusty, it's even less valuable."
"Who bids higher and sells to whom?" "The truth is, when you get the price, underestimate the scale, or delay payments, you end up losing money compared to the three brands."
