Old Deng opened an acrylic extrusion factory in Humen, Dongguan, specializing in lightbox boards and signboards. Last month, an advertising company client switched sign materials from PMMA to aluminum-plastic panels. The bags of Chimei CM-205 and Evonik 8N in the warehouse had been lying on pallets for almost a year. Dust had settled on the bags, the labels were still clear, but no one came to pick them up. Every time Old Deng drove into the warehouse, he would walk around them—this material wasn't cheap back then, but now it's piled up like waste plastic.
The signboard industry changes instantly; acrylic stored in the warehouse won't change on its own.
Obsolete materials aren't goods; they're cash flow forgotten by design.
PMMA this thing, acrylic, has high light transmittance and hardness, specifically for lightboxes, signs, light guide plates, and car taillights. What makes it so delicate? Afraid of scratches, moisture absorption, and mixing with other transparent plastics. It's the same as wearing out transparent lenses—the material itself isn't bad, but if the surface fogs up, then squeeze out the board won't produce a good shine. What's even more troublesome is that PMMA is not cheap; if you press it down, it can cost tens of thousands, covering both capital costs and warehouse rent for a year.
Acrylic material gets scratched and absorbs moisture, so its value drops accordingly.
Let me tell a truth: Old Deng once asked a group of scrap collectors. As soon as they heard it was PMMA, some people immediately said, "This transparent material is too niche, we can't make it." Someone made a price. When Old Deng called him over, the other party pinched the bag twice and said, "If you keep this material for too long, it absorbs moisture. The extruded board will show silver lines, so you can only buy it as ordinary transparent material," and slashed the price by nearly 30%. Old Deng wanted to argue, but the other person shrugged, "If you don't sell to me, there will be a long line at the door."
The wholesaler was happier seeing acrylic than seeing the fat meat—he knew you couldn't find a buyer, so he was pressing hard. He wasn't here to buy goods, but to collect your anxiety.
To put it bluntly, the price he offered was always the price he would pay to resell and sell again.
Cologne New Materials uses a terminal digestion route for PMMA recycling. Common grades like Chimei CM-205, CM-207, CM-211 are used by downstream extrusion factories, and after grading, they are immediately discarded. For Evonik PLEXIGLAS 8N, 7N, DF228N; Mitsubishi Acrypet VH001, IRH50, Shinkolite; LX MMA IF850, IG840, IH830—we also use niche materials in our own transparent modified formula, regardless of batch or color. PMMA is originally used for transparency, and when mixed back into transparent modified materials, its light transmission is still acceptable.
pricing is graded by light transmittance, haze, and appearance; clean and bright materials are priced well, while slightly misty ones are accepted as modified transparent materials. With our own production capacity and long-term customers as a backup, our quotes are stable—no price hikes just because your material is niche.
Acrylic isn't unwanted; it's just that you haven't found the right people who truly use it.
Five-step cooperation process: material reporting, graded evaluation, on-site pickup, deduction of payment, settlement and invoice. That's how Old Deng handled the batch—he took photos and sent them, bidding CM-205 at about four tons and 8N at two tons. After we appraised and quoted the price, we scheduled a time for on-site weighing. The recycling payment was directly offset by his purchase of KONICE modified plastics next month, offsetting nearly thirty thousand. Half the warehouse was cleared out, and Old Deng said it felt as comfortable as clearing an old debt.
Recycling isn't about selling acrylic at a low price; it's about revitalizing the money tied to your position.
Currently available PMMA grades for recycling include Evonik PLEXIGLAS 8N, 7N, DF228N; Mitsubishi Chemical Acrypet VH001, IRH50, Shinkolite; Chimei CM-205, CM-207, CM-211; LX MMA IF850, IG840, IH830, etc.; Other grades like Arkema Altuglas are subject to physical appraisal. In terms of form, we collect: obsolete original materials, lightbox panel edges and corners, signboard gates, waste light guide plates, and stock scrap. Do not mix transparent materials with colored materials; packing them separately for graded prices is better.
Three common misconceptions, here is a reminder—
"Is acrylic just trash if it absorbs moisture?" "The truth is, even if it absorbs moisture, it can still be used in modified transparent formulas. Just throw it away and you'll lose money."
"No one buys transparent material?" "The truth is, if you pick the right terminal, a commonly used material like CM-205 for lightboxes will still sell quickly."
"Should we just leave it for now?" "The truth is, PMMA absorbs moisture and fogs up after being sitted for a long time, and the more you store it, the less valuable it gets
