A batch of soft PVC extruded strips sent to a toy factory was so hard that when the customer tried to bend it by hand, it was like a plastic pipe, and they returned it on the spot. When the factory reviewed the formula, they found that the plasticizer had been reduced from 50 parts to 38 parts—just to save a little money on the plasticizer, the whole batch had to be remelted and remade, and the loss on labor and materials was enough to buy two trucks of plasticizer.
PVC is an interesting material. It's as hard as a plastic water pipe and as soft as cling film, and both use the same type of resin. The difference is entirely in how much plasticizer is added. Many bosses think the main cost of a PVC formula is the resin, but in fact, in soft PVC, plasticizers account for about half of the material cost. Which type is chosen and how much is added directly determines the price per ton of the material and whether it passes inspection.
First, provide a quick reference table of plasticizers, clearly listing the mainstream types, key parameters, typical products, and addition amounts. When selecting, determine the environmental requirements before choosing the type.
| system | Representative variety | Key Parameters / Features | Typical products | Add portion(s) (phr) |
|---|
| Phthalates | DOP (DEHP) | High plasticizing efficiency, good compatibility, restricted by REACH | Artificial leather, hoses, ordinary soft products | 30-60 |
| Phthalates | DINP | Migration-resistant, water-extract-resistant, low-temperature flexibility | Wire and cable sheaths, agricultural film, seals | 35-70 |
| Aromatic compounds | DOTP (DEHT) | No ortho-dichlorobenzene, good heat-resistant insulation, low volatility | 70-90℃ cables, automotive interiors, transparent granules | 35-70 |
| meta-benzenes | TOTM | High temperature resistant, extract-resistant, slow aging | High-temperature cables, automotive wiring harnesses, seals | 40-80 |
| Epoxy | ESO Epoxy Soybean Oil | Auxiliary plasticizer and stabilizer, cheap | Flooring leather, transparent products, used together with the main plasticizer | 3-10 |
| Polyester | Polyester Plasticizer (PBA) | Migration-resistant and extract-resistant, long-lasting without precipitation | Sealing strips, waterproofing membranes, water-resistant products | 20-50 |
Note: The above is the general industry range. 'phr' refers to the parts added per 100 parts of PVC resin; different manufacturers' grades and different hardness requirements vary greatly, so the actual selection should be based on the manufacturer's TDS and environmental regulations.
Whether PVC is soft or hard has never depended on the resin; it depends on how much 'plasticizer' you add.
Many bosses who have just started taking orders for soft PVC have a misunderstanding: they think that if the resin is more expensive, the material will be softer and more flexible. In fact, the resin itself is hard and brittle, and at room temperature it cannot be extruded into soft tubes at all. What makes PVC soft is the plasticizer that penetrates between the molecular chains. One end of the plasticizer molecule inserts into the gap of the PVC molecular chain, prying apart and lubricating the tightly held chain segments, allowing the chains to slide relative to each other. As a result, the material feels soft and can bend.
So adjusting the hardness of PVC essentially means adjusting the amount of plasticizer. For a hard pipe with Shore A 90, twenty to thirty parts of plasticizer are enough; for soft slippers or soft sealing strips with Shore A 60, it needs to be increased to fifty to sixty parts; for ultra-soft toys and cling film with Shore C below 50, it can even go up to seventy to eighty parts. A difference of a few parts changes the feel significantly, and customers can tell right away by bending it.
Ningbo Kolong New Materials Co., Ltd. has long been engaged in the business of various plastic raw materials and additives, with stable supplies of PVC resin, plasticizers, stabilizers, and lubricants. In the plasticizer category, although it looks like just an 'oil,' it is actually a crucial component in soft PVC formulations that determines cost and compliance—choosing the right type can save material while meeting the same hardness requirements; choosing the wrong type can result in export orders failing even initial testing. Kolong New Materials keeps regular stock of mainstream types such as DOP, DINP, and DOTP, and can recommend combinations based on customers' hardness, environmental, and heat resistance requirements. Samples can be taken in kilogram quantities, allowing parallel comparisons before deciding on bulk orders.
Cheap plasticizers are only cheap on the quotation sheet; when it comes to the return order, they are not cheap.
Figure 1 Schematic diagram of the action of plasticizers between PVC molecular chains
What plasticizer molecules do is to 'loosen' the PVC molecular chains.
When explaining the mechanism, don’t use those tongue-twisting terms. Imagine the PVC molecular chains as bundles of tightly packed wires, stiff and straight, unable to bend. Plasticizers are like tiny shims and lubricants inserted into the gaps between the wires; they’re small, with one end bonding to the PVC resin and the other pushing the chain segments apart. The more shims you insert, the looser the wires become, and the whole bundle softens and can bend. This is plasticization.
There is a key concept here called plasticization efficiency. In the industry, it is calculated like this: fix 100 parts of PVC, use 50 parts of DOP to achieve a certain elastic modulus, then see how many parts of another plasticizer are needed to achieve the same softness. The fewer parts required, the higher the plasticization efficiency. For example, the plasticization efficiency of DOP is set at 100. DOTP may require 55 parts to match the softness of 50 parts of DOP, indicating slightly lower efficiency, but it has better heat resistance, insulation, and is phthalate-free. DINP has a larger molecular weight, with slightly lower efficiency, but excels in migration resistance and long service life.
Plasticizer efficiency is directly related to cost. For types with low plasticizer efficiency, more has to be added to achieve the same hardness. Although the unit price is slightly cheaper, the total material cost may not be saved due to the increased usage. This is also why choosing a plasticizer cannot be based solely on the price per kilogram; you have to calculate 'how much it costs to reach the target hardness'.
When calculating the cost of plasticizers, don't just focus on the unit price; you need to calculate how many parts need to be added per ton of material to reach the Shore A hardness.
Achieving the same with Shao A80, choosing the right variety can make a difference of a meal's money per ton of material.
This section is specifically about accounting for costs. Why do manufacturers need to buy plasticizers? Simply put, there are three unavoidable losses: first, if the hardness does not meet the standard and the product is returned—customers use a Shore hardness tester, and if it's off by a few degrees, the entire batch is returned; second, if the wrong plasticizer is chosen, with poor migration resistance, the product will have surface oiling, stickiness, or printed words rubbing off after two months; third, if environmental regulations are not met, toys and products that come into contact with the mouth exported to the EU will be blocked at customs if phthalates exceed 0.1%. These losses can be prevented by selecting and properly formulating the right plasticizer in the formulation.
Plasticizers in soft PVC are added in quantities of thirty to forty parts or even sixty to seventy parts; the dosage is considered large among additives. Because the amount used is large, the price difference between varieties becomes magnified. Is this a 'small investment'? Compared to the total material cost per ton, changing the variety might result in a difference of a few hundred to a thousand or so per ton, which is quite common; but what it affects are the big accounts of yield, return rate, and compliance—one return can amount to the cost of an entire batch of material.
Where it saves: Choose varieties with high plasticization efficiency and good migration resistance, so that the same hardness can be achieved with less material, the product does not exude or become sticky, and inventory can be stored. Where it is stable: The batches are stable and the quantities are accurate, so hardness and feel are consistent between batches, allowing customers to approve products on the first try. Where it is flexible: Hardness can be adjusted by quantity; if the customer wants it harder, pour a few units less; if softer, pour a few units more, without changing the resin.
The table below puts together the material prices of common varieties, typical portions, and their impact on yield and compliance, making it convenient to calculate for your own products.
| Cost item | DOP General | DINP | DOTP phthalate-free | Polyester plasticizer |
|---|
| Relative Unit Price | Low | middle | Medium-high | Tall |
| Typical Hardness (Shore A80) | About 50 copies | About 53 copies | About 55 copies | About 55 copies |
| Migration/Precipitation Resistance | Generally, oiliness tends to develop over time | Better | Good | Very good, almost no precipitation |
| Heat-resistant insulation | Generally, 65℃ cable grade | Better | Okay, 70-90℃ cable grade | Good |
| Environmental compliance | Ortho-phenyl restricted, export restricted | Phthalates, restricted in imported toys | No phthalates, export-friendly | Non-phthalate, water-resistant and oil-resistant |
| Overall suitable | Domestic ordinary soft products | cable sheath, agricultural film | Export, car interior | Sealing strips, long-lasting waterproof components |
Note: The unit price is a reference commonly used in the industry and fluctuates with the petrochemical market; the quantity and performance are subject to the actual TDS and sample results, and are only used here for horizontal comparison purposes. Unsure whether to use DOP, DINP, or DOTP? Send over the product application, temperature resistance, and environmental requirements, and we can help you choose the grade and calculate the comprehensive material cost to achieve the target hardness.
Many bosses ask: If I directly buy pre-formulated modified soft PVC pellets, wouldn't that be more convenient? This is half true. Buying modified pellets directly means the supplier has already mixed the resin, plasticizers, and stabilizers, so you can just use them for injection molding or extrusion, which is hassle-free; but you are locked into their formulation and grade—if a customer wants a slight change in hardness, you have to reorder a new grade, with a minimum order of a ton, and long lead times. According to common industry cost calculations, on top of the raw material cost, a ton of modified pellets includes additional extrusion processing fees of about 1,000–1,500 yuan, packaging fees of 100–250 yuan, management and sales costs of about 5%–10%, plus supplier profit; self-preparation means saving this markup, adjusting hardness by tweaking the proportions, and simply modifying the formula for different customer requirements. Inventory is just general resin and drum-packed plasticizers, which is much more flexible.
But self-mixing has its limits: you need equipment for blending and measuring, and the ability to test formulas; if the quantities are very small, or the certification requirements are strict (such as for food contact or medical grade), buying compliant modified pellets directly is actually more convenient. The table below makes the two approaches clear.
| Comparison item | Buy ready-made soft PVC modified pellets | Base material Plasticizer self-prepared |
|---|
| material cost | Including processing fees and brand premiums, it's relatively high | The bare price of resin with added plasticizer is usually lower (industry common standard) |
| Flexibility | Can only choose ready-made grades, hardness is fixed | Hardness is fine-tuned by proportion, and changing the ratio is quick |
| Minimum order quantity | Minimum order: whole ton | Resin is priced by the ton, and plasticizer can be flexibly supplied by the barrel. |
| Delivery time | Constrained by supplier scheduling | General material inventory is taken as is, change the formula without changing the material |
| Compliance data | The supplier provides a complete set of reports | Self-controlled formula, testing data needs to be retained by oneself |
| Suitable for whom | Small dosage, strict certification requirements, don't want to formulate | Large quantity, variable hardness specifications, conditions for mixed materials |
Nonylphenol is not a multiple-choice question you take just because you want to; it is the entry ticket when export orders are delivered.
Plasticizers are not patented for PVC; TPU, seals, and coatings are all secretly using them.
When it comes to plasticizers, everyone thinks of PVC, but they are actually used in many plastics and elastomers. PVC is the heaviest user, TPU also uses them to adjust hardness, and soft rubber products, artificial leather, shoe soles, and waterproof membranes all rely on them to adjust texture. The matrix below, spanning multiple categories, lists typical applications, addition ranges, and precautions for plasticizers in various systems.
| Category | Typical scenario | Addition range | Effect | Precautions |
|---|
| Soft PVC | Hose, sealing strip, artificial leather | 30-70 phr | Adjust firmness and enhance elasticity | Use phthalate varieties with restrictions cautiously |
| PVC cable material | Electric wire sheathing, automotive wiring harness | 35-60phr | Temperature-resistant insulation, low volatility | High-temperature wire choose DOTP/TOTM |
| PVC film/calendered film | Cling film, tablecloth, floor film | 40-80phr | Soft and transparent, easy to process | Food contact materials must be compliant types |
| TPU | Hoses, films, footwear materials | 5-20phr | Reduce hardness, enhance flexibility | Pay attention to compatibility with TPU substrate |
| Rubber soft products | Sealing strips, sealing rings, soft rubber parts | 10-40phr | Reduce hardness, improve machinability | Choose a durable pull-out type anti-spitting cream |
| PVC artificial leather | Bags and luggage leather, sofa leather, garment leather | 40-60phr | Soft and fold-resistant, closely adheres to the surface | Migration-resistant and prevents surface oiling |
| PVC shoe sole | Rain boots, slippers, sole materials | 35-55 phr | Soft, non-slip, and wear-resistant | Pay attention to aging resistance and fold whitening |
| Coating / Plastic Dip | Tool handle dip-coated, iron wire coated | 40-70phr | Soft covering, scratch-resistant | Pay attention to the plasticizer exudation time |
This matrix only provides the directions; the specific quantities need to be sampled according to the target hardness. Ningbo Kolong New Materials Co., Ltd. has stock of PVC resin and plasticizers all year round. For cable customers, DOTP or TOTM combinations are recommended according to heat resistance levels. For export toy customers, samples are prepared directly with a phthalate-free system, with phthalate testing support documents included with the shipment. During the sampling stage, kilogram-level samples and hardness comparison data can be provided, so customers don't have to start from scratch to build a formula baseline. Unsure about soft PVC hardness or environmental requirements? Send the product, Shore hardness, and export region, and we can first help you determine which type of plasticizer to use.
Replacing ortho-xylene with non-ortho-xylene is not just swapping a barrel of oil; it determines whether the entire export order can be fulfilled.
The soft PVC formula locked by the brand, changing the approach saved material and sped up delivery.
Let's talk about a common example in a factory (scenario example, not a specific customer). A factory in East China that makes soft PVC sealing strips used to always buy pre-mixed modified soft PVC pellets. The problem was that there were many customers, and the hardness of the sealing strips ranged from Shore A 65 to Shore A 80, with five or six specifications. Each specification corresponded to a different modified material grade, so the warehouse was holding six or seven grades of material. If any customer suddenly increased their order, they had to wait for the supplier to schedule production, which could take as little as a week or as long as ten days.
Later, Ningbo Cologne New Materials Co., Ltd. gave them a new approach: don’t buy modified pellets, buy general-purpose PVC resin and barrelled plasticizers and mix them yourself. Keep only one general-purpose grade of resin, adjust the hardness by the amount of plasticizer—add a few more parts for Shore A 65, a few less for Shore A 80, set up a small metering and mixing machine, and changing the specification is just a matter of adjusting the numbers.
After calculating, there are three changes: first, the warehouse went from stocking six or seven grades to only stocking one resin plus two plasticizers, which reduced inventory usage; second, when the customer temporarily changes the hardness, it can be adjusted on the same day, and the delivery time has dropped from a week to two or three days; third, the material cost has been reduced by a few hundred yuan per ton because the processing fee for modified materials and the grade premium have been removed. Of course, the premise is that someone in the factory has to manage the formulation and sample preparation, not just buy it and pour it in.
The boundaries of this case also need to be clarified: if you mix it yourself, you have to handle tasks like trial formulation, measuring, and sample testing on your own. If you only produce two or three specifications a year and the volume is small, doing it yourself is actually not cost-effective; if there are many specifications and the volume is large, then doing it yourself can make financial sense. When should you not modify it yourself? When certification documents require a complete set of supplier information, or when the cost of trial-and-error formulation exceeds the material price difference, it's better to honestly purchase modified pellets.
The cost accounting of soft PVC hides most of the expenses in those few barrels of plasticizer oil.
Hardness is marked on the order, cost is hidden in the plasticizer
Finish by giving a quick selection reference chart, and match it to your own product accordingly.
| Your product | Think about this first | Recommended direction | When will you stop choosing like this? |
|---|
| Export Toys / Imported Parts | Orthophenyl ≤0.1% | DOTP or phthalate-free polyester system | Don't use DOP, it gets stuck at customs. |
| 70-90℃ cable | Heat-resistant insulation | DOTP/TOTM | Ordinary DOP can only reach 65°C grade |
| Long-term outdoor seal strip | Migration-resistant and non-precipitating | Blending polyester or DINP | Pure DOP becomes hard and oily after prolonged use |
| Transparent soft products | Light transmission and compatibility | DOP/DINP Transparent Grade | Transparent parts of the filler type |
| Domestic ordinary hose | Cost priority | Mainly DOP | If you want it to be water-resistant, just switch varieties. |
| Super soft and super tough products | Low hardness, high fraction | Main plasticizer plus ESO auxiliary | Pay attention to processability when the quantity is too high |
You can tell whether PVC is soft or hard the moment a customer bends it; whether the plasticizer is chosen correctly will be revealed on the return order.
Several frequently asked questions, explained all at once
Q: How much PVC plasticizer is generally suitable? A: It depends on the target hardness. For hard pipes with a Shore A 90, add 20 to 30 parts; for soft products with a Shore A 60, add 50 to 60 parts; for ultra-soft products, it can reach 70 to 80 parts. 'phr' refers to parts added per 100 parts of resin. Adding too little will make it hard, adding too much will make it sticky and reduce mechanical strength. Start with a middle amount when making samples and adjust up or down.
Q: What is the difference between DOP and DOTP, and how should plasticizers be substituted? A: DOP has high plasticizing efficiency and is cheap, but phthalates are restricted by REACH, so toys for export and imported parts may fail inspection; DOTP is a phthalate-free, environmentally friendly plasticizer alternative, with good heat resistance and insulation, slightly higher price, and a bit more quantity. When substituting, do not directly replace in equal amounts; you need to re-sample according to the target hardness.
Q: Soft PVC products develop surface oiliness and stickiness after two months. What should be checked first? A: First, check the migration resistance of the plasticizer — if DOP or similar low molecular weight plasticizers with poor resistance to extraction are used, they tend to leach out over time. Next, check whether the dosage is too high or if the ratio with other plasticizers is incorrect. For long-term products, switching to DOTP or polyester plasticizers can greatly reduce leaching.
With the right plasticizer, the cost and compliance of soft PVC can be realized together.
