一车再生PP拉到车间,造粒一开机,一股子塑料味、油酸味冲出来,操作工直捂鼻子。注塑成汽车内饰件,客户拿鼻子一闻,直接说气味等级超标,整车厂内饰要求VDA 270气味测试,这股味根本过不了。好好的再生料,因为一股味只能当低价杂料卖。

再生料卖不上价,差的常常不是性能,是那股挥不掉的味
先把一个账算明白:再生料便宜,本来是它的优势,可一股味把这个优势全吞了。新料做的内饰件无味、过气味测试,能卖内饰级价;同一堆再生料,性能差不多,就是有味,客户闻一下就压价,从内饰级跌到杂料级,一吨差好几千。
这股味哪来的?再生料在回收、加工、储存过程中,树脂热氧降解产生醛类,残留的油污、助剂分解出硫化物、胺类,再加上料里吸的水分——这些小分子就是VOC和气味的来源。你不把它抓走、拆掉,料再怎么便宜也进不了内饰、家电这些对气味敏感的门。

除味剂干的事,是把臭味分子抓走、拆成无味
机理说人话。除味不是往料里喷香精盖味——那是掩耳盗铃,温度一高香味没了,臭味又冒出来。正经的除味母粒干两件事:一是像海绵一样吸附,沸石分子筛浑身是微孔,把料里跑出来的VOC小分子吸进去;二是像清洁剂一样分解,里面的活性基团跟醛、硫、胺这些臭味分子反应,把它们拆成没味的东西。
水分也是帮凶。再生料吸了潮,加工时水遇热成汽,制品表面起银纹、内部起气泡,水还帮着树脂分解产味。所以除味母粒里常复配吸湿成分,把残余水分也带走。但要讲清楚:吸湿母粒是辅助,替代不了正规预干燥,PA、PET这种亲水料该烘干还得烘干。

再生料除味被问得最多的几点
问:塑料除味剂一般加多少合适?答:常规1%-3%,高异味料3%-5%。从2%做起,测气味等级往上加,别一上来就倒满,加多了母粒成本上去、还可能影响浅色制品外观。浅色件记得选白色基母粒。

A truckload of recycled PP was brought to the workshop. As soon as the granulator started, a strong smell of plastic and oleic acid hit, and the operators immediately covered their noses. When molded into automotive interior parts, the customers smelled it and directly said the odor level exceeded the standard. The automaker's interior requirement is the VDA 270 odor test, and this smell would never pass. The good recycled material can only be sold as low-priced mixed material because of the odor.
There are two headaches with recycled materials: one is odor, the other is moisture. If the odor is too strong, customers won’t want it and it can’t be sold at a good price; if the moisture content is high, the products develop silver streaks and bubbles, and it also accelerates decomposition, producing odor. This article talks about how deodorizers and desiccants can tackle these two hidden killers at the same time, allowing smelly recycled materials to be sold at a good price.

Recycled materials can't be sold at a good price; it's often not the performance that's lacking, but that persistent odor that can't be removed.
First, let's clarify the accounts: recycled material is cheap, which is supposed to be its advantage, but a single smell completely swallows up this advantage. Interior parts made from new material are odorless and pass odor tests, allowing them to be sold at interior-grade prices; the same batch of recycled material, with similar performance but having a smell, makes customers reduce the price after just smelling it, dropping from interior-grade to miscellaneous-grade, costing a few thousand per ton difference.
Where does this smell come from? During the recycling, processing, and storage of recycled materials, the resin undergoes thermal-oxidative degradation, producing aldehydes. Residual oils and additives decompose into sulfides and amines. On top of that, the moisture absorbed by the material—these small molecules are the sources of VOCs and odors. If you don’t remove them, no matter how cheap the material is, it can’t be used in interiors or home appliances, which are sensitive to odors.

The job of a deodorizer is to capture odor molecules and break them down into odorless ones.
Explain the mechanism in plain language. Removing odors is not about spraying flavoring into the material to cover up the smell—that’s like fooling yourself; when the temperature rises, the fragrance disappears and the bad odor comes back. Proper odor-removing masterbatches do two things: first, they absorb like a sponge. Zeolite molecular sieves are full of micropores that capture the small VOC molecules escaping from the material; second, they break down like a cleaner. The active groups inside react with odor molecules like aldehydes, sulfur compounds, and amines, breaking them down into odorless substances.
Moisture is also an accomplice. When recycled material absorbs moisture, the water turns into steam during processing, causing silver streaks on the surface of the product and bubbles inside. Moisture also contributes to the decomposition of the resin, producing odors. Therefore, in deodorizing masterbatches, hygroscopic components are often added to remove residual moisture as well. But it must be made clear: hygroscopic masterbatches are only an aid and cannot replace proper pre-drying. Hydrophilic materials like PA and PET still need to be dried before use.
There is literature data for reference: adding about 4% of zeolite-based deodorizer to recycled materials can reduce the odor intensity by approximately 45% compared to not adding it. In low-odor recycled PP formulations used for automotive interiors, composite deodorizers often account for 3-8 parts. At this level, the odor grade visibly decreases. Incidentally, odor is quite subjective, so the industry nowadays does not rely on the nose alone to make decisions; instead, they measure according to standard methods like VDA 270—placing the sample in a sealed bottle at a constant temperature for a certain period, then having evaluators score it by grade, so that there is data to communicate with car manufacturers and home appliance manufacturers.
Deodorization is not about covering the smell with fragrance; it's about actually breaking down the odor molecules.
Odorous materials are sold as low-priced materials, and adding deodorizing masterbatch can raise them to a higher price level.
This section is about accounting. Why do manufacturers buy odor-removing and moisture-absorbing agents? The loss scenarios are very straightforward: first, the odor level fails to meet the requirements of automobile or appliance manufacturers, and the incoming material inspection gets rejected; second, interior parts are shipped out, and customers complain about the smell when they open the car door, leading to after-sales claims; third, recycled materials with a strong odor can only be sold as low-priced miscellaneous materials, resulting in a loss of a thousand or two per ton, no matter how good their performance is, they cannot be monetized.
The typical addition of odor-removing masterbatch is 1%-3%, and 3%-5% for strong odors. It may not seem like much, but it directly determines the grade this recycled material can be sold at. According to the industry's common cost standards, recycled PP is about six to seven thousand yuan per ton, and odor-removing masterbatch is generally priced at a dozen to twenty-something yuan per kilogram. Adding 2% translates to a few hundred yuan per ton in cost, but it upgrades the value from a miscellaneous grade to an interior-grade level.
Where the savings are: After deodorization, recycled material can be used in interior parts and home appliances, and the extra money per ton far exceeds the cost of the masterbatch. Where the stability is: The odor is consistent from batch to batch, and customers do not complain upon retesting. Where the flexibility is: For materials with a strong odor, add a bit more; for cleaner materials, add a bit less, adjusting the amount according to the state of the material. When calculating this, don’t just focus on the few hundred yuan for the masterbatch—you should compare the same ton of recycled material, which, after adding the masterbatch, can jump in price from scrap-level to interior-level. The difference in the middle is the real profit.
Here is an example according to the common industry standards: 1 ton of recycled PP interior material costs about 6,500 yuan/ton. Adding 2% composite deodorizing and moisture-absorbing masterbatch (around 20 yuan/kg) results in an additional cost of about 400 yuan per ton. This 400 yuan reduces the odor level from relatively high to an acceptable range for car manufacturers, upgrading the material from a mixed-grade to interior-grade. The added value per ton far exceeds the 400 yuan.

Moreover, when it comes to buying ready-made low-odor modified recycled pellets, it is still an option to add deodorizing masterbatch to recycled material yourself. Buying modified material is more convenient, as the supplier has taken care of deodorization, compatibility, and color matching; but according to the industry's common cost calculation, on top of the base material, a ton of modified pellets includes extrusion processing fees of about 1,000–1,500 yuan, packaging fees of 100–250 yuan, and management, sales, and financial expenses of about 5%-10%, plus profit. DIY modification essentially saves this added cost layer.

The boundaries need to be made clear: odor-removing masterbatch cannot save materials that are outrageously dirty. If there are heavy oil stains, water marks, or mixed contaminants of PVC and PE, they need to be sorted and cleaned first. For food-contact or medical-grade products, the migration from the odor-removal system itself also needs to go through formal testing; don't skip this step for the sake of convenience. Don't expect that simply adding masterbatch can completely eliminate all odors; it only suppresses odors within an acceptable range, giving the material a step up to be used in interior or home appliance applications.
Moisture is an accomplice; flavor is treated together with water, and only recycled material is truly clean.
