AES和ABS长得像,都是苯乙烯系,外行看差不多。但AES用的是三元乙丙橡胶做主链,耐候、耐紫外线,做后视镜外壳、挤出型材、户外晾衣件的。单价上比普通ABS贵一截,所以一压库,占的钱也更多。
它放久了,跟户外晒旧的塑料椅一样——刚买时白净挺括,放几年发黄发脆,自己都嫌寒碜。原包料开袋吸潮,回炉前不烘透,制品表面就出问题。
更现实的痛点:车间每天切的AES水口料,和ABS水口料长得太像,工人图省事往一个袋里倒。一混,AES的耐候优势就打了折扣,只能当普通ABS卖。
混料不心疼钱,是因为你不知道混掉的是什么价。

Old Zheng works in Beilun, Ningbo, making automotive exteriors and weather-resistant home appliances. The workshop faces the sea, and the humidity is heavy. Last month, a project for outdoor equipment casings failed. The warehouse had two pallets of AES raw material, still under the Techno-UMG brand, with a layer of salt-like dust on the bag opening.
AES this material was chosen for "weather-resistant and non-yellowing," used for outdoor parts, automotive exteriors, and extrusion profiles. But it was always afraid of one thing—storage. The humidity by the sea is high, and after long bagged materials, the color and physical properties change accordingly.
Old Zheng's warehouse manager moved the material to the inner room and placed it against the wall, with the ledger marked "pending evaluation." Waiting there lost the peak season warehouse space.
The awkward part of outdoor materials is: buying them for weather resistance, but after sitting too long, you end up falling short in the "weather resistance" aspect.
Obsolete materials aren't assets, they're liabilities lying on the books.
AES looks similar to ABS—both are styrene-based, which outsiders might think is similar. But AES uses ethylene propylene diene (EDM) rubber for the main chain, which is weather-resistant and UV-resistant, used for rearview mirror housings, extrusion profiles, and outdoor clothes. It's a bit more expensive than regular ABS, so when you put it in storage, it costs even more.
After sitting for a while, it's like a plastic chair used for outdoor sun-drying—when first bought it, it's bright and crisp, but after a few years it turns yellow and brittle, and even I find it useless. The original packaging absorbs moisture when opened, and if not thoroughly baked before reheating, the product surface will have problems.
A more practical pain point: The AES sprue material cut daily in the workshop looks too similar to ABS sprue material, so workers try to save effort and pour it into one bag. Once mixed, the AES weather resistance advantage is reduced, so it can only be sold as regular ABS.
Mixing material doesn't mind the money because you don't know what price the mixed material is for.
Old Zheng once contacted the buyer. The vendor picked up the material pellets, glanced at them, and said, "Isn't this ABS? I'll pay you at the ABS price." Old Zheng immediately understood—he couldn't even tell the difference between AES and ABS, so how could the quoted price be good?
To put it bluntly, wholesalers instinctively lean toward ABS for materials that "look like ABS" because they recognize ABS. The weather resistance premium of AES is worthless to them. It's not that they don't understand, they're just too lazy to understand, and once they do, it's harder to lower the price.
The vendor's quotation sheet is like a weather forecast—just glance at it before you leave, don't take it seriously.

Telling a true story. Last year, a factory in Ningbo that made outdoor clothes drying pieces had about 5 tons of original AES packaging mixed with a pile of sprue material. The customer changed suppliers, and orders disappeared. On this trip, I helped him sort out the AES mixed in ABS for grading, then modified the exterior for those with good weather resistance, and the recycled amount was directly offset against the next batch of KONICE goods, about half offset. The row of mixing bags in the workshop was cleared out, and the storage space was returned.
Good materials aren't worried about not being picked up; the real worry is selling good materials as scrap.
AES the grades we are familiar with: Techno-UMG, Dakeneng, Yulingtong, TECHNO AES W245, W230, SK30, KumHo HW601HI, and other mainstream weather-resistant grades are all accepted; the rest are subject to physical appraisal.
Recyclable forms: obsolete raw materials, sprue gate materials, extruded profile scraps, defective scrap parts, and inventory surpluses. Special reminder—AES sprue material must be bagged separately from ABS; mixing it with the weathering premium disappears.
- "Isn't AES just ABS?" The truth is AES follows the weathering main chain, with a high premium; mixing and selling it is selling cheaply.
- "Waiting for the project to restart?" The truth is that outdoor material gets more yellow the more you store it, and its physical properties can't hold up first.
- "Who bids the highest price and sells to whom?" The truth is, you can't tell AES from ABS; what they quote you is ABS price.
