TPU | TPE |
|---|

The outsoles wear flat and slip after three months of use, and customers return batch after batch. If the abrasion resistance level of the sneaker outsoles is not chosen correctly, this pair of shoes is wasted.
When the outsole is worn through and slippery, don't blame the craftsmanship first.
The outsole of sports shoes is the 'part that steps on the ground every day': wear-resistant, grippy, and flexible. The material needs to be wear-resistant, grippy, and flexible—conclusion first: TPU is the mainstream for sports shoe outsoles; for casual shoe outsoles, TPE offers a higher cost-performance ratio.
The biggest trap with sneaker outsoles: 'you get what you pay for' is a fairy tale. Expensive doesn't necessarily mean better, and cheap doesn't necessarily mean worse—choose materials based on performance, not price.
The outsole of sports shoes is a functional component: wear-through and slipping are both problems. Choosing the right material keeps the shoes stable—don't skimp on material for functional parts.
Why professional shoes must use TPU
Reasons for using TPU for sneaker outsoles: good wear resistance, good grip, good flexibility, high efficiency — together, these four make it suitable for outsoles.
Wear resistance is key: stepping on the ground every day. Wear resistance tests (according to standards) are written into the acceptance—if it wears through, it's a problem.
Grip cannot be compromised: sudden stop and steering. Grip tests are included in acceptance inspections—if it slips, it's a problem.
Daily Flooring: Three Operating Conditions
Ground contact condition: constant friction. Wear resistance data must be tested — if it wears through, that's the problem.
Emergency stop condition: Emergency stop steering. Traction data needs to be checked—slipping indicates a problem.
Bend resistance condition: repeated bending. Bend resistance data must be tested—if cracking occurs, it's a problem.
TPU or TPE? Where is the 30% price difference?
| Dimension | TPU | TPE |
|---|
| Wear-resistant | Strong | middle |
| grip | Good | Good |
| Durable | Good | Can be done |
| Cost | Tall | middle |
| Weight | heavy | Light |
| Purpose | Professional | Leisure |
Table reading: TPU is wear-resistant and strong but expensive and heavy; TPE is light and cost-effective — professional shoes use TPU, casual shoes use TPE.
Choose by intensity: professional TPU, casual TPE.
Sole inspection: These four items, if not checked, will definitely cause trouble
| Project | Method | standard |
|---|
| Wear-resistant | Wear test | According to the standard |
| grip | Coefficient of friction | According to the road surface |
| Fold-resistant | Bend test | By frequency |
| Peel off | Outsole bonding | By force value |
How to read the table: After evaluating the four items, the fairy tale of 'you get what you pay for' is broken—choose materials based on performance, not price.
Performance is the true measure of a large sensor.
Choose materials based on price; out of three risks, one is unavoidable.
Pitfall 1: Choosing based on price. Expensive doesn't necessarily match the working conditions, and cheap isn't necessarily bad—choose based on performance.
Pitfall 2: Abrasion resistance overstated. The report claims abrasion resistance, but it actually wears through — abrasion resistance should be accepted based on actual tests.
Pitfall 3: Delamination missed in testing. Outsoles coming off—peel test is a must.
Ask about these three numbers before selecting materials
Three questions: What standards for wear resistance, what surfaces for grip, how much peeling force. One check: actual wear test measurement—three questions and one check, the supplier's details are clear.
Performance verification comes first: test wear resistance and grip before discussing price—performance is the true measure of the outsole.
Making sample retention a habit: retain samples for each batch, and retest wear resistance and grip by batch. When changing materials between batches, compare first before scaling up — stable batches lead to fewer customer complaints.
Outsole Shore A 80-90 Hard, elastic, and wear-resistant — Shore A 85 is a common range for sneaker outsoles. The depth, direction, and density of the anti-slip pattern together determine grip, and are designed according to the target pattern requirements. When selecting an outsole, wear resistance and anti-slip pattern are determined together.
The outsole wears flat after three months of use and loses grip — different surfaces wear differently, and treadmills, streets, and rubber tracks test differently. Conduct tests according to the target market's surfaces.
Wearing down is not due to foot effort; it's because the abrasion setting was not chosen correctly.
Don't blame the glue first when the outsole and midsole delaminate—the outsole is too hard and the midsole is too soft, causing high stress at the interface when bending. Tell the supplier the midsole material and choose the outsole accordingly.
The peeled-off root relies on the combination of soft and hard, not on applying glue.
TPU has a higher wear resistance, while TPE is lighter and about 30% cheaper—choose TPU for running shoes if you need durability, and TPE for casual shoes if you want lightness. Although both are used for outsoles, they each serve a different purpose in terms of wear resistance and lightness. TPU and TPE are categorized by usage scenarios, not by price.
Brand certification requires clear inquiry—sports brands have certification requirements for materials, and if the certification is not passed, the product cannot enter the supply chain. Conduct tests based on actual road conditions, don't just use a single set of data to cope.
You can only enter the supply chain once both certification and scenario data are complete.
Common Problems and Countermeasures of Sports Shoe Outsoles
| Phenomenon | Reason | Countermeasure |
|---|
| wear through | Insufficient wear resistance | Replace wear-resistant material |
| slip | Insufficient traction | Change the texture/pattern |
| Cracking | Insufficient fold resistance | Change to wear-resistant material |
| Delamination | Insufficient stripping | Adjust adhesion |
| Batch Drift | Formula fluctuation | Lock window |
The wear of sneaker outsoles is measured according to DIN 53516, and the volume loss must be <150mm³ to pass. TPR outsoles wear 200-300mm³, TPU outsoles 80-120mm³—look at wear volume to judge outsole durability, not just tensile strength.
The bond strength of outsoles and midsoles should be checked at 2.5kN/m or above; delamination is the main after-sales issue.
TPR outsoles and EVA midsoles have different polarities. Only by choosing the correct surface treatment agent can the peel strength be achieved—if delamination occurs, first check the surface treatment, don’t blame the adhesive.
Cologne customer case: Tight delivery schedule, stock mismatched, reformulate and certify
A footwear material factory in Nanjing was facing a tight schedule for sneaker outsoles, and the stock grades didn’t meet performance requirements. Cologne assisted by reformulating (adjusting oil/auxiliary/filler ratios), passed third-party testing, and completed certification to deliver on time. Reformulating achieved the required performance and certification—tight schedules rely on prepared solutions.
Summary
When selecting sneaker outsoles, first consider performance, then test for abrasion. "You get what you pay for" is a fairy tale; choose materials based on performance.
Ningbo. There are many people here working with plastics, and quite a few working with modified nylon.
Our work is very concrete: transforming thermoplastic elastomers and resins like PA6, PA66, PA46, PA11, PA12, PA6T, PA9T, and nylon alloys into forms that can actually be used for a specific part; also modifying PPO, PPS; we also handle the nylon resins, secondary materials, and bulk materials from major chemical giants.
Different parts require different materials.
