How much is EPS per kilogram?
Quotes range from CNY 10.1/kg to CNY 16/kg. EPS (expandable polystyrene) is not one material: standard, flame-retardant, high-grade flame-retardant, graphene and large-particle grades each carry a different price. Comparing a standard quote with a high-grade flame-retardant one is not price comparison; it is how you get fooled.
1. Mainstream grade quotes (imported + domestic) — recent market references; live prices subject to same-day inquiry.
BASF (Germany)
Styropor BF-495, stable performance, fine particles, approx. CNY 16/kg. High expansion ratio, stable performance; premium packaging.
Styropor general-purpose, approx. CNY 13-15/kg. General packaging, insulation.
Kumho (South Korea)
Kumho EPS general-purpose, approx. CNY 12-14/kg. Cost-effective; general packaging, insulation.
Xingda (Chinese major)
PKF standard grade, approx. CNY 11.35/kg (ex-works). General foaming, board, packaging.
ZFR standard flame-retardant, approx. CNY 11.85/kg (ex-works). Flame-retardant packaging, insulation.
SFR high-grade flame-retardant, approx. CNY 11.95/kg (ex-works). Premium flame retardancy, building insulation.
PKF-301XS easy-foaming, steam-saving, approx. CNY 12/kg. Low-density products, board.
Longwang (Chinese producer)
Longwang general-purpose, approx. CNY 13.8-14/kg. Foam boxes, packaging, insulation.
Longwang B-4S fine particles, approx. CNY 14/kg. Fine foaming, small-part packaging.
In short: standard CNY 11-12, standard flame-retardant CNY 11.5-12.5, high-grade flame-retardant CNY 12-13, imported stable grades CNY 13-16.
2. Why prices differ so much
Four factors: (1) Flame-retardant grade — building insulation EPS must be high-grade flame-retardant. (2) Particle size — it decides expansion ratio and surface quality; fine particles and very large particles cost more. (3) Foaming performance — easy-foaming grades save steam and are slightly dearer, but cheaper on energy per part. (4) Brand and origin — for the same standard grade, BASF costs about 40% more than Xingda, paying for quality control and stability.
3. Procurement pitfalls
The cheapest material often means insufficient expansion ratio, high part density, heavy steam consumption and returns. Three traps to avoid:
First, test expansion ratio and particle-size distribution against the COA instead of trusting the grade name. Second, watch for substitution: some traders sell standard as flame-retardant or large particles as fine particles; demand the COA, a flame-retardancy test report and original packaging. Third, calculate total cost per cubic meter: A at CNY 11/kg with a 40x expansion ratio and high steam consumption vs. B at CNY 12/kg with 50x and less steam — B is cheaper.
4. Standard grades not enough? Consider modified solutions
If you need flame retardancy AND high expansion, graphene conductivity AND low cost — you need modified EPS. Ningbo Kolong New Materials is developing high-performance modified EPS solutions covering flame retardancy, graphene conductivity, high expansion and low thermal conductivity. Message us for a modified EPS quote reference.
In plain terms: standard grades are a big pot of shared rice; modified compounds are a dish cooked to order.
5. Same-day quotes via message
EPS prices change daily — styrene, pentane and exchange rates all move. Message us for same-day quotes on specific grades from BASF, Kumho, Xingda or Longwang; real numbers.
Final words
The gap between CNY 11 and CNY 16 is not CNY 5. Unit price is the threshold; choosing the right flame-retardant grade and expansion ratio is the baseline. You are buying a cubic meter of foamable solution. Add steam energy and rejected-goods loss into the per-cubic-meter math, and you will know who is truly cheap.
