01 保险杠不是橡胶做的,它根本没硫化
很多人以为,汽车保险杠是橡胶压出来的。毕竟它那么软、那么弹,撞一下能吸能。
真相是——它根本没硫化过。它是PP聚丙烯和EPDM乙丙橡胶的物理共混物,学名叫TPO,热塑性聚烯烃。橡胶相没有交联,加热了还能重新注塑,跟真橡胶那种硫化后再也不熔化的东西,是两码事。
这个反常识,每年都要新一批采购踩坑。有人拿TPV当TPO买,贵了一截;有人拿回料TPO做保险杠,冬天一撞就裂。保险杠这东西,装车要扛零下二十度的冲击,料不对,就是一撞碎一片。
这篇就把TPO讲明白:它和TPV差在哪,全球盘子握在谁手里,副牌又怎么挑才不踩雷。
02 TPO是什么,保险杠凭什么用它
TPO,热塑性聚烯烃弹性体。说白了,就是PP里掺进EPDM橡胶,让硬的PP带上橡胶的弹性。它比纯PP韧、比纯橡胶轻、加工还快,加热熔化、冷却定型,注塑一次成型。
它的活儿很集中:汽车保险杠、车身侧包围、内饰表皮、仪表板蒙皮;再就是屋顶防水卷材、软触感握把。汽车行业是它的主战场,尤其是保险杠。
这里要分清一个关键概念:TPO和TPV不是一回事。TPO是物理共混,橡胶相没硫化,加工流动性好、成本低;TPV是动态硫化,EPDM橡胶在共混时被交联,耐热、耐压缩永久变形更好,但价格更高。保险杠大多用TPO,真要耐高温耐油才找TPV。
这个市场,据Dataintelo口径,全球TPO盘子排在前面的三家国外大厂是:荷兰利安德巴塞尔(LyondellBasell)、美国埃克森美孚(ExxonMobil)、奥地利北欧化工(Borealis)。份额大致在16%、13%、11%上下浮动,SABIC、三井化学也在同一梯队。
03 副牌不是降级,是熔指硬度那条线在浮动
先把定义讲透。副牌,是同一厂家同一牌号里,出厂检验没完全达到正牌指标的那一部分。来源就四类:开停车头尾料、牌号切换过渡料、工艺波动致个别指标小幅超标的批次、副线尾料。
TPO副牌,浮动的多在熔指、硬度、低温冲击这几项。这里有一句结果要记住:
TPO副牌对上保险杠壁厚那一档,零下二十度装车不裂、喷完漆不脱层,量产一次过。
它和回料、再生料的界限要拎清。回料是加工边角料再造粒,受过一次热历史,PP和橡胶的界面已经老化;再生料是废旧保险杠粉碎造粒,低温冲击掉得厉害。而原厂TPO副牌,还是原生共混粒子,PP和EPDM那套弹性底子没动。保险杠用回料,冬天一撞就是碎片。
04 利安德巴塞尔:Adflex的Catalloy掌门
荷兰利安德巴塞尔,TPO牌号有Adflex、Hifax、Softell,靠Catalloy工艺做反应器直接生成的TPO树脂。据Dataintelo与PW Consulting口径,它在全球TPO市场份额约16%,是这个盘子里份额靠前的玩家,汽车保险杠和内饰表皮都用它。
它的副牌特点是:熔指或硬度小幅浮动,但低温冲击和韧性底子没动。做一般保险杠、外饰件,挑对副档,冬天冲击站得住。
05 埃克森美孚:Santoprene的弹性体老店
美国埃克森美孚,弹性体品牌有Santoprene、Exact。据Dataintelo口径,它在TPO市场份额约13%,产品线覆盖汽车和工业软触感件。要提醒一句:Santoprene偏TPV方向,买的时候看清是TPO还是TPV。
它的副牌,常见情况是硬度或流动指标在出厂边缘浮动。做对软触感要求较高的内饰件、保险杠表皮,挑精选副档,手感和韧性都在线。
06 北欧化工:Daplen的欧系主力
奥地利北欧化工Borealis,TPO牌号叫Daplen,据Dataintelo与PW Consulting口径份额约11%,主打汽车内外饰,低挥发、低密度方向用得不少。
它的副牌,往往是熔指或气味指标轻微偏离正牌。做大批量保险杠、内饰件,挑对副档,轻量化和加工性都够用。
07 买TPO副牌,先分清TPO和TPV
TPO副牌验收,抓三件事。
先分清TPO还是TPV,两者价格和用途差一截,别花TPV的钱买TPO、也别拿TPO硬上耐高温件。再看低温冲击和熔指,保险杠冬天要扛撞击,冲击掉一档就是隐患。后看原厂原包,大包装小包装都行,但批号、厂家要对得上,防止有人拿回料保险杠粉碎料冒充。
常见的坑是:拿回料TPO做保险杠,冬天一撞裂成几块;或者把熔指偏高的副牌做厚壁保险杠,缩痕和翘曲全出来。保险杠是安全件,低温冲击这一项,省什么都不能省。

后来改用进口大厂TPO的精选副牌,熔指和硬度实测与正牌偏差很小,低温冲击实测达标,冬天装车不再裂,退货率压到1%以内,一吨料成本还下来一截。
01 The bumper is not made of rubber; it hasn't been vulcanized at all.
Many people think that car bumpers are made by pressing rubber. After all, they are so soft and so elastic, able to absorb impact when hit.
The truth is—it has never been vulcanized. It is a physical blend of PP (polypropylene) and EPDM (ethylene-propylene rubber), scientifically called TPO, thermoplastic polyolefin. The rubber phase is not cross-linked, and it can be remolded when heated. This is completely different from real rubber, which cannot melt again after vulcanization.
This counter-intuitive fact causes a new batch of procurement mistakes every year. Some people buy TPV thinking it’s TPO and end up paying a lot more; some use recycled TPO to make bumpers, which crack at the slightest impact in winter. Bumpers need to withstand impacts at minus twenty degrees when installed on cars, and if the material is wrong, it will shatter on impact.
This article will clearly explain TPO: how it differs from TPV, who holds the global market share, and how to choose sub-brands without making mistakes.
02 What is TPO, and why can bumpers use it?
TPO, thermoplastic polyolefin elastomer. Simply put, it is PP mixed with EPDM rubber, giving hard PP the elasticity of rubber. It is tougher than pure PP, lighter than pure rubber, and faster to process. It melts when heated, shapes when cooled, and can be injection molded in one go.
Its work is very focused: car bumpers, side body panels, interior coverings, dashboard skins; and also roof waterproofing membranes, soft-touch handles. The automotive industry is its main battlefield, especially bumpers.
It is important to distinguish a key concept here: TPO and TPV are not the same. TPO is a physical blend, with the rubber phase uncured, offering good processing flow and low cost; TPV undergoes dynamic vulcanization, where EPDM rubber is cross-linked during blending, providing better heat resistance and resistance to compression set, but at a higher price. Most bumpers use TPO, and TPV is chosen only when high heat and oil resistance are required.
According to Dataintelo, in this market, the top three foreign manufacturers in the global TPO sector are: LyondellBasell from the Netherlands, ExxonMobil from the United States, and Borealis from Austria. Their market shares fluctuate around 16%, 13%, and 11%, respectively, with SABIC and Mitsui Chemicals also in the same tier.
03 The secondary card is not a downgrade; it's that the fuse finger hardness line is fluctuating.
First, let's explain the definition thoroughly. Secondary grade products are the portion from the same manufacturer and the same grade that do not fully meet the standard product specifications during factory inspection. There are four sources: leftover material from starting and stopping production, transitional material from grade switching, batches where individual indicators slightly exceed limits due to process fluctuations, and leftover material from secondary production lines.
TPO sub-brand, the variations are mostly in melt index, hardness, and low-temperature impact. Here is a result to remember:
The TPO sub-brand matches the thickness of the bumper wall; it doesn't crack when loaded at minus 20 degrees, and the paint doesn't peel off—ready for mass production in one go.
The distinction between regrind and recycled material must be clear. Regrind is made by re-pelletizing processing scrap; it has already been exposed to one thermal history, and the interface between PP and rubber has already aged. Recycled material is made by crushing and pelletizing old bumpers, which suffers severe low-temperature impact loss. In contrast, factory TPO tertiary brands still use virgin blended particles, and the PP and EPDM elastic base remains intact. Using regrind for bumpers will result in them shattering upon impact in winter.
04 Liande Basel: The Head of Adflex's Catalloy
Netherlands' LyondellBasell, with TPO grades such as Adflex, Hifax, and Softell, produces TPO resin directly in reactors using the Catalloy process. According to Dataintelo and PW Consulting, it holds about 16% of the global TPO market share, making it one of the leading players in this segment, and its products are used for automotive bumpers and interior skins.
Its secondary grade characteristics are: slight fluctuations in melt index or hardness, but the low-temperature impact resistance and toughness foundation remain unchanged. When making general bumpers and exterior trim parts, if you choose the right secondary grade, it can withstand impacts in winter.
05 ExxonMobil: The Established Elastomer Shop for Santoprene
ExxonMobil in the United States has elastomer brands such as Santoprene and Exact. According to Dataintelo, it has about a 13% market share in TPO, with a product line covering automotive and industrial soft-touch parts. One thing to note: Santoprene leans more towards TPV, so make sure to check whether it is TPO or TPV when buying.
Its secondary grade often experiences hardness or flow index fluctuations at the edge of factory specifications. When making interior parts or bumper skins that require a high degree of soft touch, select the premium secondary grade; both the feel and toughness are up to standard.
06 Northern European Chemicals: Daplen's Main European Force
Austria's Nordic chemical company Borealis, with the TPO brand called Daplen, has a market share of about 11% according to Dataintelo and PW Consulting, mainly targeting automotive interior and exterior trims, and is widely used in low-volatility, low-density applications.
Its secondary grade is often characterized by slight deviations in melt index or odor indicators from the main grade. When producing large quantities of bumpers or interior parts, selecting the right secondary grade is sufficient for lightweighting and processability.
07 Buying TPO sub-brands, first distinguish between TPO and TPV
TPO sub-brand inspection, focus on three things.
First, distinguish between TPO and TPV; their prices and uses differ significantly. Don’t pay TPV prices for TPO, and don’t try to use TPO for high-temperature parts. Next, check low-temperature impact resistance and melt flow index. Bumpers need to withstand impacts in winter, and a decrease in impact resistance is a potential risk. Then, look at whether it’s original packaging from the factory. Large or small packaging is fine, but the batch number and manufacturer must match to prevent someone from passing off recycled bumper scraps as new material.
Common pitfalls are: using recycled TPO to make bumpers, which can crack into several pieces in winter upon impact; or using a secondary brand with a high melt index to make thick-walled bumpers, resulting in shrink marks and warping. Bumpers are safety components, and for low-temperature impact, there is no cutting corners.

There is a client in Luoyang who makes car bumpers. Previously, they bought unknown-sourced TPOs to save money, but in winter, the bumpers would crack as soon as they were installed. The bumper return rate once reached 10%, and the OEM was pressing them urgently.
Later, we switched to a selected sub-brand of TPO from a major imported manufacturer. The melt index and hardness measured were very close to the main brand, the low-temperature impact test met the standards, there were no longer cracks during winter installation, the return rate was reduced to below 1%, and the cost per ton of material also decreased.
