第一,别拿PA6/PA66顶PA612。

You think you're buying cheap nylon, but you're actually buying dimensional drift after absorbing water
When purchasing industrial precision parts, it's easy to fall into the illusion of buying long carbon chain nylon as regular nylon.
PA6. PA66 is cheap and looks like nylon, so ordering is straightforward. But for precision gears, as the moisture content increases, the size expands, gear tolerances exceed limits, gear surfaces make abnormal noises, and the entire batch of equipment is disassembled and reassembled. Buyers think they're saving on material costs, but in reality, what they buy is "size luck ."
PA612 is here to cure this problem—long carbon chains have low water absorption and good dimensional stability. But the genuine brand is expensive, and small factories can't supply it stably, so the secondary brand becomes a quiet option for those in the know. This article explains PA612 thoroughly: why it doesn't absorb water, who are the world's top three foreign manufacturers, and how to choose the secondary brand. The
PA612's skill is to push the water absorption rate to the long carbon chain level
PA612 which is polyamide 612, polymerized from hexamethylenediamine and dodeca carboxylic acid. As the carbon chain grows, the density of the amide group in the molecule decreases, making the water absorption rate much lower than PA6 and PA66. In humid environments, dimensional changes are minimal, which is the confidence behind making precision gears and precision structural components.
It also retains nylon's oil-resistant, wear-resistant, and self-lubricating base, and its low-temperature toughness is better than short-chain nylon. Precision gears, bearing cages, cable sheaths, and precision housings—all components that require stable dimensions and wear resistance are well matched.
The major foreign manufacturers making PA612 worldwide are concentrated in Europe and America. Looking at technology and shipment crossover, the top tier is DuPont, Evonik, and BASF; EMS-GRIVORY and Arkema also have layouts in adjacent long-chain carbon chain nylon. Note that PA612 and PA12 are often confused. PA12 uses the dodecanam route, which is more expensive. When selecting materials, don't let suppliers use other grades to meet your needs.
Sub-brand is not a nylon downgrade; it's the sub-brand in the same batch from the original factory where the moisture content item hasn't crossed the line
PA612 still the part from the same manufacturer and grade that hasn't fully met factory inspection standards. The molecular chain is consistent with the genuine brand; the low water absorption base for the long carbon chain hasn't changed, only a few indicators—often moisture content, melting index, color difference—are slightly deviated.
The four main sources remain unchanged: start-stop and tail materials, grade switching transition materials, batches with process fluctuations causing single items to exceed standards, and secondary line tail material. These are still original factory polymer particles, not re-reworking.
Boundary Clear: Genuine brand meets all indicators and batches are stable; Sub-brand has slight deviations in some indicators, but base material is consistent; Reuse material means scrap material is re-pelletized and has undergone a thermal cycle; Recycled material fluctuates greatly. Making precision gears fears moisture content and impurities; using recycled material means burying hidden dangers on the gear surface. The secondary brand is the original material that can reduce costs.
DuPont: Zytel is the old brand of nylon technology
DuPont is a pioneer in the nylon industry; the Zytel® series includes the PA612 grade. Its materials have a strong certification record for automotive, electronics, and industrial precision parts, often seen in precision gear and connector formulations.
DuPont's secondary brand features tightly tight dimensional stability and batch consistency; even if some optical or melt index indicators are missing, mechanical and water absorption performance remain intact. For precision gears where "dimensions don't blew away," using their carefully selected secondary brands presses water content into process requirements before machine use, reducing the chance of failure.
Evonik: VESTAMID D, a specialist in long-chain nylon
GermanyEvonik Industrial puts PA612 in the VESTAMID® D series, specializing in high heat resistance and low water absorption grades of long-chain nylon. Their materials have deep expertise in high heat-resistant structural parts and plastic-rubber composite parts. The advantage of
Evonik's secondary brand is its heat resistance and stable dimensions, making it suitable for precision parts with high working temperatures and dimension-free dimensions. Their materials are often packaged in large quantities, and mass production lines for high-volume precision gears use bulk packaging to break down costs. When choosing their secondary brand, focus on moisture content and thermal aging numbers.
BASF: Ultramid, a major manufacturer with a full range of engineering plastics
BASF's Ultramid® series is a major manufacturer in the full range of engineering plastics. The PA612 grade is used in new energy structural parts and industrial precision parts. Its material processing window is wide and supply is stable, suitable for large-scale continuous mass production. The characteristics of
BASF's secondary brand are a wide variety of grades and uniform specifications, allowing them to match precision gears with different modules and wall thicknesses. When choosing their secondary brand, it is recommended to check moisture content, melting index, and shrinkage rate together. Precision gears are sensitive to shrinkage rate and almost cause meshing noises.
Pick a PA612 secondary brand, first eliminate these four pitfalls
First, don't use PA6/PA66 to replace PA612. Short carbon chains have high water absorption; for precision parts, make sure to wash them. Confirm the carbon chain before ordering.
Second, look for the three European and American original sub-brands. DuPont, Evonik, BASF original sub-brands have clear origins and can be checked with absorbency records.
Third, dry the material before testing moisture content. The drying process before loading the nylon material determines the dimensions after installation, and the secondary brand must keep the moisture content within the process line.
Fourth, calculate shrinkage rate and module together. Precision gears are sensitive to shrinkage rate; when sub-brands are sent to the factory for proofing, the tooth surface accuracy must be thoroughly tested to avoid detecting meshing noises only after assembly.

Eight selection tips, the Soft Advertising case is at the end
Eight key tips: First, check if the carbon chain is 612; 2. Recognize DuPont, Evonik, and BASF original sub-brands; 3. Dry before testing for moisture content; 4. Match the melting index to wall thickness; 5. Calculate shrinkage rate together with the module; 6. Select large and small packages according to mass production scale; 7. Obtain high-certified precision parts with official brands; 8. Use selected parts for general precision structural parts.
Zhengzhou has a client who makes precision gears for industrial gearboxes. Previously, they used PA66 for gears cheaply, but the workshop was flooded, causing gear tolerances to drift. After installation, gear surface noise and wear occurred quickly, resulting in a high factory return rate over the year. Later, they switched to DuPont's original PA612 sub-brand. After entering the factory, they first controlled moisture content and sample tooth surface precision, switching PA66 to the PA612 solution. After two years, complaints about abnormal gear noise dropped from a dozen or so per month to single digits, and the cost per piece was even lower than the genuine PA612.
This is the value of a long carbon chain—it's not that PA66 can't handle a damp workshop. Ningbo Kelong New Materials Co., Ltd. has been doing sub-brands for major imported factories for years, helping clients sort out issues like "absorbent float size" during material selection. Simply put, don't let gear replacement pay for water content.
