There is a hierarchy of disdain in the plastic industry: those who produce transparent GPPS look down on those who make HIPS, those who make HIPS look down on those who use recycled material, and those who use recycled material look down on those who sell HIPS as ABS. But if you really want to make household appliance shells, refrigerator linings, or printer housings, you can't avoid HIPS — it's tougher than GPPS, cheaper than ABS, and perfectly suited for mid-range applications.

The question is: For domestic HIPS secondary brands, how do you choose without falling into pitfalls? Among Sinopec, PetroChina, and Xinghui Environmental Materials, whose material is more reliable?

What is HIPS? What is its relationship with ABS and GPPS?

HIPS is high-impact polystyrene, in which butadiene rubber particles are introduced into the GPPS matrix, sacrificing some transparency in exchange for impact toughness. HIPS is opaque, but it has a good balance of rigidity and toughness, excellent processing flow, and a price slightly lower than ABS. Therefore, it is widely used in the fields of household appliance housings, refrigerator liners, office supply casings, toys, and packaging materials.

Difference from ABS: ABS contains acrylonitrile, which provides better chemical resistance and heat resistance; HIPS does not contain acrylonitrile, is cheaper, and has sufficient toughness. Many appliance casings originally used ABS, but now switch to HIPS to reduce costs, provided the product does not have extreme requirements for chemical resistance and heat resistance.

Domestic HIPS production capacity is also concentrated in the two major systems of Sinopec and PetroChina. Sinopec's subsidiaries, such as Yangzi Petrochemical and Qilu Petrochemical, have relatively large production capacities; PetroChina's subsidiaries, such as Daqing Petrochemical and Jilin Petrochemical, provide stable supply in the Northeast region. Xinghui Huancai (Shantou), as a private PS specialized manufacturer, has an annual HIPS production capacity of 350,000 tons combined with GPPS, making it the leading PS producer in South China.

HIPS sub-brand: Toughness and gloss are two crucial points

HIPS secondary grade refers to batches whose test indicators slightly deviate within the same grade system of the original manufacturer. For HIPS, the most common differences in the secondary grade concentrate on three aspects: slightly lower impact strength, surface gloss deviation, and melt index fluctuation.

Why are these three aspects key? The core selling point of HIPS is 'tough and glossy.' If the impact strength is poor, the casing will crack easily when dropped; if the surface gloss is poor, the household appliance casing will look dull and not bright enough; if the melt flow index fluctuates greatly, molding large products will be unstable.

Let me repeat the difference with recycled material: HIPS recycled material is made by crushing the product's outer shell and then re-pelletizing it, so its impact strength has already decreased a lot, and the surface gloss is gone; HIPS secondary grade is the original manufacturer's virgin pellets, with only slight deviations in some indicators. When making refrigerator inner linings, using the secondary grade is a matter of 'is the gloss sufficient,' while using recycled material is a matter of 'do you dare to use it.'

Sinopec: Yangzi Petrochemical as the core, well-known for household appliance casings

Sinopec's HIPS production capacity is centered on Yangzi Petrochemical, supported by units such as Qilu Petrochemical. Relying on Sinopec's refining and chemical integration advantages, Sinopec's HIPS has a large number of stable customers in the fields of household appliance housings and packaging materials, with strong supply capabilities for mid-to-high-end grades (high-gloss, flame-retardant, heat-resistant modified series).

In terms of brand grades, Sinopec HIPS covers multiple directions including high gloss, flame retardant, and heat-resistant grades. The characteristics of its secondary grades are: the secondary high gloss grade still has a base level of surface gloss, suitable for appliance shells that require appearance; the secondary flame retardant grade requires attention as the flame retardant level may slightly deviate, making it unsuitable for certified flame-retardant parts.

PetroChina: Daqing Petrochemical as the core, refrigerator liners have tradition

The HIPS production under CNPC is centered on Daqing Petrochemical and Jilin Petrochemical, with stable supply in the Northeast region. Daqing Petrochemical's HIPS has a solid customer base in traditional application areas such as refrigerator liners and large household appliance structural components.

In terms of representative grades, CNPC HIPS mainly focuses on general-purpose and high-impact grades. The characteristics of its secondary grades are: good impact resistance base, suitable for products that require toughness but do not have extreme requirements for gloss; cost advantages are prominent, making them suitable for large-batch, price-sensitive home appliance structural parts.

HIPS Secondary Brand Pitfall Avoidance Guide

First, don’t use off-brand parts with inconsistent gloss for home appliance exteriors. For TV cases and monitor frames, surface gloss is a strict standard; customers will notice at a glance if the off-brand parts have poor gloss.

Secondly, for load-bearing parts, do not use sub-brands with relatively low impact strength. The impact strength of HIPS sub-brands is lower than that of the main brand, so they should not be used for load-bearing shells or support components.

Third, flame-retardant parts must be certified. The flame-retardant grade of HIPS flame-retardant sub-brands may deviate slightly, so products that require flame-retardant certification (such as appliance housings) must use the genuine brand; do not gamble with sub-brands.

Fourth, source locally. South China customers prioritize Xinghui Environmental Materials, East China customers prioritize Sinopec-affiliated companies, and Northeast customers prioritize PetroChina-affiliated companies—HIPS unit prices are not high, and shipping costs account for a significant portion.

Cologne keeps a regular stock of domestic HIPS secondary brands in the Ningbo warehouse, mainly promoting brands from the three leading domestic companies: Sinopec, CNPC, and Xinghui Huancai. How to choose domestic HIPS secondary brands? Remember four sentences: check the gloss for appearance parts, check the impact resistance for load-bearing parts, don't use secondary brands for flame-retardant parts, and source locally to reduce costs.

An injection molding factory in Suzhou that makes printer casings had been using a certain imported brand-name HIPS, which was quite expensive per ton. This year, they switched to the secondary high-gloss grade HIPS from Sinopec supplied by Kolong. They first tested two tons of small samples on the machines, and the surface gloss and impact strength were both within the acceptable range for the products. After processing in bulk, the casings were approved by the customers, and the cost per ton of raw material dropped by nearly 1,800 yuan. The factory manager said: 'Printer casings are not certified parts, the gloss of the secondary brand is sufficient, so why pay for the brand-name?'
