1. What is PCTA, and where do foreign big companies rank

PCTA is a copolyester modified with cyclohexanedimethanol (CHDM), copolymerized with terephthalic acid, adipic acid, and polyols. It is in the same family as PETG and PCTG: PETG uses ethylene glycol plus CHDM, PCTG mainly uses CHDM, while PCTA introduces adipic acid, offering better flexibility and chemical resistance, making it especially suitable for cosmetic containers.

The global PCTA market is a small segment, with the top tier overseas being very concentrated. Eastman is the leader; its Eastar PCTA series accounts for 20% to 40% of the amorphous copolyester market depending on the specifications, with the Tritan and Eastar lines. South Korea's SK Chemicals ranks second with the ECOTRAN and SKYGREEN series. Japan's Unitika's A-ESTER is the third company producing PCTA.

To put it plainly, abroad, PCTA is basically controlled by Eastman, SK Chemicals, and Unitika. When buying secondary brands, the main choice is Eastar and original materials in the ECOTRAN system with slightly fluctuating indicators.

2. What exactly is the origin of the PCTA sub-brand?

▍PCTA sub-brand matches the formulation of cosmetic packaging containers, keeping them clear without fogging, preventing fragrance creams from mixing odors, and making demolding smoother with each time.

Let's first settle the definition: a secondary brand refers to the portion of products from the same manufacturer and the same brand number that did not fully meet the technical specifications of the main brand during factory inspection. For the same batch of copolymers, if all tests pass and the main brand label is applied, but some individual specifications are slightly off, they are considered the secondary brand.

The four main sources of PCTA sub-brands: head and tail materials when the equipment starts and stops, transitional materials during grade switching, batches with slightly excessive light transmittance or haze, and tail materials from secondary production lines.

The key point is — it is still original factory native copolyester particles, with molecular structure identical to the genuine brand, only slight fluctuations in indicators like light transmittance, haze, and hue. It is not reprocessed from waste materials.

PCTA makes cosmetic containers that come into direct contact with the skin and creams. Even secondary brands need to check for leaching; you shouldn't just go for the cheapest option.

3. Eastman: Eastar and Tritan lines

The first one, Eastman, United States. The Eastar 5000 series is PCTA, used for cosmetic packaging and tool handles; Tritan is its signature transparent copolyester without BPA.

Eastman's secondary brand mainly varies in light transmittance, haze, and hue. Transparent cream jars need to be highly transparent; the secondary brand with higher haze works well for inner packaging and display pieces, but is lacking for highlighting outer bottles.

4. SK Chemicals: ECOTRAN and SKYGREEN

The second one is SK Chemicals from South Korea.

ECOTRAN PCTA and the SKYGREEN series account for about 20% of the market share. SK's PCTA follows a cost-performance strategy, producing 3D printing filaments, automotive parts, and consumer electronics in the Asia-Pacific market. Its by-product yield is low, making it suitable for cosmetic inner trays and display parts.

The circulation volume of SK system sub-cards is smaller than that of Eastman, so when you encounter them, you need to make sure they are genuine SK products and check the batch number and place of origin.

5. Unitika: A-ESTER's Japanese Fine

The third one, Japan's Unitika.

A-ESTER is its PCTA grade, used for optical films, blister packaging, and injection-molded parts, following the Japanese-style fine route, with small quantities.

To be frank, abroad, it's just Eastman, SK, and Unitika that dominate PCTA. Before buying, first recognize the system—don't pass off PETG as PCTA to fool anyone—these two both look transparent, but their chemical resistance differs a lot.

6. When buying a PCTA secondary card, mark the four slots first

After talking about the big picture, let's go over a few pitfalls that people really fall into.

First, don't pass off PETG as PCTA. Both are transparent, but PCTA is more chemically resistant and flexible, and it doesn't transfer flavors when holding pastes; PETG tends to stress-crack when holding oil-based pastes and turns white when pressed.

Second, look at the light transmittance and haze. Cream jars should be highly transparent, while sub-brand jars with high haze should be used as inner containers; don't forcefully use high-gloss outer bottles.

Third, look at leaching and food contact. Cosmetics come into direct contact with the skin, so the leaching of by-products must meet standards; don't use industrial-grade substances to pass off as cosmetic-grade.

Fourth, demolding and wall thickness. Cosmetic thin-walled parts are common, and the secondary gate must align with the mold; otherwise, it won't fill completely or may stick during demolding.
