Engineers who work on PC/ABS alloys, fiberglass-reinforced nylon, and coating solid-phase binders have a love-hate relationship with SMA. They love it because it really works when added, but dislike it because imported SMA is expensive, has long lead times, and varies in color with each batch. Many people think domestic SMA is unreliable, but foreign brands like Total Cray Valley and Polyscope are still the more reliable choices. But you might not know that domestic companies have been industrializing SMA resin for over a decade. What is

SMA? Is the domestic production landscape really that bad

SMA (Styrene-maleic anhydride copolymer) is a styrene copolymer with anhydride groups on the molecular chain, whose core functions are compatibilizer and reactive capacity enhancer. It can combine PC and ABS, bond fiberglass and nylon together, and disperse inorganic fillers in the coating. Global SMA resin production capacity is highly concentrated, with France's Total Cray Valley (formerly Polyscope) and Germany's Dresdner as the two main players, and the domestic market has long relied on imports.

Domestically, Jiaxing Huawen Chemical Co., Ltd. is one of the earliest local enterprises to industrialize SMA resin, with products including SMA700 and SMA800, mainly used as compatibilizers for high-end automotive dashboard frames, air conditioning fans, and other products. The company has a modern production base in Jiaxing Port Area, focusing on the R&D and production of SMA series products. Besides Huawen, research institutes such as Zhonglan Chenguang Institute have technical accumulation in SMA modification, but few companies have large-scale resin mass production.

Regarding foreign factories in China, Total mainly supplies domestically through trade channels and has not built SMA resin polymerization units in mainland China. This means the substitution space for domestic SMA is greater than you might think.

SMA Specialities of Sub-Brands: Acid anhydride content is key

SMA Sub-brand has an important difference from other sub-brands: the core indicator of SMA is maleic anhydride content (acid anhydride value), which directly determines compatibility efficiency. Sub-brand SMAs usually have acid anhydride content fluctuating slightly near the standard value—for example, grades nominally rated at 18% MAH may fluctuate between 16% and 20%. Indicators such as melting index and color difference may also have deviations.

SMA secondary brands also come from four main categories: start-stop tail materials, grade switching transition materials, batches with slight anhydride deviations due to process fluctuations, and secondary line tailings. They are still original original original polymer particles, with molecular structure identical to the genuine brand, except their anhydride value or melting index is outside the labeled range. The difference between

and recycled material deserves a clear explanation: after SMA re-feed is extruded and pelletized again, the anhydride groups may have partially hydrolyzed and failed, greatly reducing compatibility efficiency. The secondary brand SMA has never left the original polymerization line, with intact anhydride groups. When you buy a secondary brand, you get "virgin material with slightly offset anhydride value," while when you buy recycled material, you get "re-granulated material that has already failed." The effects of these two differ greatly.

Jiaxing Huawen Chemical Pioneer of Domestic SMA Industrialization

Jiaxing Huawen Chemical Co., Ltd. is located in Jiaxing Port Area, Zhejiang, and is one of the earliest domestic enterprises engaged in SMA resin industrialization. The company has a registered capital of 65 million yuan and mainly produces grades such as SMA700 and SMA800. Its products serve as compatibilizers to improve the interphase compatibility and adhesion of polymer alloys. Typical applications include high-end automotive dashboard frames, air conditioner fans, and other components requiring high heat resistance and dimensional stability.

Huawen Chemical's SMA resin uses continuous polymerization technology, giving its products a place in the domestic SMA niche. As a local company focused on the SMA category, Huawen's advantages are: focused products, flexible response, and short delivery cycles—imported SMA often has a lead time of 4-6 weeks, while Huawen's usually takes 1-2 weeks. For modification factories purchasing in small batches or multiple batches, this response speed is crucial.

For sub-brands, Huawen SMA's sub-brand mainly comes in small packages, mainly from batches where process fluctuations cause slight deviations in anhydride values. For application scenarios where anhydride requirements are less precise—such as ordinary PC/ABS alloy capacity expansion or general coating additives—sub-brand SMA is fully compatible. In the second tier, Zhonglan Chenguang Institute has technical reserves in SMA modification and additives, but mainly focuses on R&D and small batches, and has yet to form large-scale resin supply.

How to choose domestic SMA sub-brand? Don't just look at the nominal name

First, you need to test the anhydride value. The core risk of SMA secondary brands is not appearance or melting fingers, but the acid anhydride value. Before purchasing, suppliers are required to provide anhydride test data for the same batch, and after arrival, re-measure by titration. If the supplier says "SMA secondary brands don't need anhydride measurement," this is basically telling you they're not selling secondary brands.

Second, control the replacement ratio. When using domestic SMA secondary brands as compatibilizers for the first time, it's recommended to start with samples at 70% of the genuine brand's dosage, then gradually adjust to 100% based on compatibility. Because the secondary brand's anhydride value is relatively low, you may need to add slightly higher amounts to achieve the same compatibility effect, but the cost is still lower.

Third, avoid hydrolyzed materials. SMA anhydride groups can hydrolyze into carboxylic acids when they meet moisture, reducing compatibility efficiency. When purchasing, check whether the packaging is dry and shows signs of moisture, and control humidity in the storage environment. If you smell sour or see white granules on the surface after opening the package, it may be partially hydrolyzed. Do not use it.

Cologne Warehouse Stock Domestic SMA sub-brand small batch fast supply

Cologne Warehouse in-stock SMA sub-brand mainly promotes Jiaxing Huawen Chemical domestic SMA resin, mainly including SMA700, SMA800 and other compatible grade products, mainly for small packages. Warehouse stock is usually between 2000-5000 tons, with small sub-brand stocks at 300-600 tons, boxed sub-brand stocks at 150-300 tons, and large packages/tons at 1500-4100 tons. Supply guarantees follow batch traceability channels, with each batch retained for over three months, and anhydride test sheets are carried along with the goods
