采购把一摞样件甩在工程师桌上:“这批后视镜外壳,装车三个月就发黄变色,主机厂要索赔,你说怎么办?”
工程师拿起样件对着窗边的光看了半天:“你这料,是ABS吧?”
“对啊,不都是外壳料吗?”采购一脸不解。
“ABS和ASA,差的就是这一场太阳。”工程师把样件放回桌上,“丁二烯不耐紫外线,晒一个夏天就黄、就脆。外饰件要扛户外,得用ASA。”
这段对话,每年夏天都在汽车外饰件厂上演一遍。这篇就把ASA这档料讲明白:它凭什么扛晒,全球盘子握在谁手里,副牌又该怎么挑。
02 ASA是什么,耐候这件事它凭什么
ASA,学名丙烯腈-苯乙烯-丙烯酸酯共聚物。它和ABS是亲兄弟,但做了个关键手术:把ABS里的丁二烯橡胶,换成了丙烯酸酯橡胶。
丁二烯分子链里那双键,是紫外线和氧气的活靶子,一晒就断链变黄。丙烯酸酯没有这个软肋,耐候性直接上了一个台阶。所以ASA做的外饰件,户外放几年也不怎么黄。
它的活儿很集中:汽车外饰件——后视镜外壳、散热格栅、三角饰板、轮眉;再就是户外设备、别墅百叶窗、庭院家具、空调外机面板。一句话,凡是要风吹日晒的塑料外壳,多半是ASA的地盘。
这个市场,据Dataintelo口径,全球前五大玩家合计产能约占63%。排在前面的三家国外大厂是:英力士苯领(INEOS Styrolution)、沙特基础工业(SABIC)、韩国LG化学。数据来源分歧时按梯队看,巴斯夫、奇美也在这一梯队里。
03 副牌不是降级,是色差那条线在浮动
先把定义钉死。副牌,是同一厂家同一牌号里,出厂检验没完全达到正牌指标的那一部分。来源就四类:开停车头尾料、牌号切换过渡料、工艺波动致个别指标小幅超标的批次、副线尾料。
ASA副牌,浮动的多是色差、熔指、表面光泽这几项。这里有一句数字要记住:
同牌号ASA副牌色差ΔE常在个位数内浮动,户外暴晒年限不缩水,基材分子链与正牌同源。
它和回料、再生料的界限要拎清。回料是加工边角料再造粒,受过一次热历史;再生料是废旧塑料回收造粒,耐候性已经打折。而原厂ASA副牌,还是原生聚合粒子,丙烯酸酯那套耐候底子没动。外饰件用回料,晒一年就给你看颜色。
04 英力士苯领:Luran S的当家掌门
英力士苯领总部在德国,ASA品牌叫Luran S。据其公开资料,英力士是少数在所有地区都有ASA产能的厂家,牌号从标准到ECO系列都有,汽车外饰件圈认它很多年。
它的副牌特点是:耐候性和冲击强度底子硬,浮动的多在熔指或表面光泽。做对光泽要求不顶格的外饰件、车顶行李架端盖、格栅饰条,挑对副档,扛晒这事不打折扣。
05 SABIC:把GELOY做到外饰件那一档
沙特基础工业SABIC,ASA品牌叫GELOY。据Chemical Research Insight口径,SABIC在ASA市场收入份额约22%,是这个盘子里份额靠前的玩家,主打户外耐候、尺寸稳定,用在外饰件和建材上。
它的副牌,常见情况是色相或熔指在出厂边缘浮动。做黑色、深色外饰件,色差那点浮动肉眼几乎看不出,性价比很够用。
06 LG化学:Starex的东亚主力
韩国LG化学,ASA品牌叫Starex,据多家市场报告,它在外饰件市场用得不少,后视镜外壳、散热器格栅、窗型材都能见到。
它的副牌,往往是流动性能或外观指标轻微偏离正牌。做对外观一致性要求适中的外饰结构件,挑精选副档,注塑成型和耐候都站得住。
07 买ASA副牌,别拿ABS的经验往上套
ASA副牌验收,抓三件事。
先看耐候——别只看化验单,要做QUV或氙灯老化对标,外饰件这关省不得。再看色差ΔE和熔指,深色件色差浮动影响小,浅色件就很敏感。后看原厂原包,大包装小包装都行,但批号、厂家要对得上,防止有人拿ABS改色料冒充ASA。
常见的坑是:拿ABS改黑后冒充ASA做外饰,装车一个夏天发黄;或者把熔指偏高的副牌拿去做薄壁饰条,充模不满。外饰件是户外件,耐候这一项,省什么都不能省。

01 A conversation: The casing that turns yellow after being stored for three months
The purchaser threw a stack of sample parts onto the engineer's desk: 'These rearview mirror housings turned yellow and discolored after being installed on cars for three months. The OEM wants to make a claim. What do you suggest we do?'
The engineer picked up the sample and held it up to the light by the window for a long time: 'This material of yours, it's ABS, right?'
"Yeah, aren't they all just shell materials?" the buyer asked, looking puzzled.
"ABS and ASA, the difference is just this one sun exposure." The engineer put the sample back on the table. "Butadiene is not resistant to UV light; after one summer in the sun, it turns yellow and brittle. Exterior trim needs to withstand outdoor conditions, so you have to use ASA."
This conversation plays out every summer at the automotive exterior parts factory. This article will clarify this ASA material: why it can withstand sun exposure, who controls the global market, and how to choose the sub-brands.
02 What is ASA, and what gives it authority in weather resistance?
ASA, scientifically known as acrylonitrile-styrene-acrylate copolymer. It is a close relative of ABS, but underwent a key modification: the butadiene rubber in ABS was replaced with acrylate rubber.
The double bonds in the butadiene molecular chain are active targets for ultraviolet light and oxygen, so they break and turn yellow when exposed. Acrylic esters don’t have this weakness, and their weather resistance is directly improved. Therefore, ASA exterior parts don’t yellow much even after being outdoors for several years.
Its work is very focused: automotive exterior parts — mirror housings, radiator grilles, triangular trim panels, wheel arches; as well as outdoor equipment, villa shutters, courtyard furniture, air conditioning unit panels. In short, any plastic casing exposed to the elements is mostly ASA's domain.
According to Dataintelo, in this market, the combined capacity of the top five global players accounts for approximately 63%. The top three foreign companies are: INEOS Styrolution, Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC), and LG Chem of South Korea. When there are discrepancies in data sources, looking by tier, BASF and Chi Mei are also in this tier.
03 The sub-label is not downgraded; the color difference line is fluctuating.
First, let's fix the definition. Sub-brand refers to the portion within the same manufacturer and the same grade whose factory inspection did not fully meet the standards of the main brand. There are four sources: starting and stopping scrap of production, transitional material from grade switching, batches with slight deviations in certain indicators due to process fluctuations, and tail materials from secondary lines.
ASA sub-brand, the floating differences are mostly in color variation, melt index, and surface gloss. There is a number here to remember:
The color difference ΔE of the ASA subgrade with the same grade usually fluctuates within single digits, does not shrink under outdoor exposure for years, and the molecular chain of the base material is of the same origin as the main grade.
The distinction between regrind and recycled material must be clear. Regrind is made by re-pelletizing processing scraps and has gone through one heat history; recycled material is made from recovered waste plastic, so its weather resistance is already compromised. The original factory's ASA secondary brand still uses virgin polymer particles, so the acrylate-based weather resistance remains intact. Using regrind for exterior parts, and a year in the sun will show you the color change.
04 Yinglis Benzene Leader: The Head of Luran S
INEOS Styrolution's headquarters is in Germany, and the ASA brand is called Luran S. According to its public information, INEOS is one of the few manufacturers with ASA production capacity in all regions, with grades ranging from standard to ECO series, and it has been recognized in the automotive exterior parts sector for many years.
Its secondary grade characteristics are: strong foundation in weather resistance and impact strength, with variability mostly in melt index or surface gloss. When making exterior parts where gloss requirements are not top-notch, roof luggage rack end caps, and grille trims, choosing the right secondary grade ensures that sun exposure performance is not compromised.
05 SABIC: Take GELOY to the level of exterior trim parts
Saudi Basic Industries SABIC has an ASA brand called GELOY. According to Chemical Research Insight, SABIC's market revenue share in ASA is about 22%, making it one of the leading players in this sector, focusing on outdoor weather resistance and dimensional stability, used in exterior parts and building materials.
Its sub-brand, in common situations, has hue or melt index fluctuations at the factory edge. When making black or dark exterior parts, the slight color difference is barely visible to the naked eye, and the cost performance is quite sufficient.
06 LG Chem: Starex's Main Force in East Asia
South Korea's LG Chem, under the ASA brand called Starex, is reported by multiple market reports to be used quite a lot in the exterior parts market, visible in rearview mirror housings, radiator grilles, and window profiles.
Its sub-brand often slightly deviates from the main brand in terms of fluidity or appearance indicators. For exterior structural parts with moderate consistency requirements for appearance, select the sub-grade carefully; injection molding and weather resistance are both acceptable.
07 Buy an ASA sub-brand, don't apply your experience with ABS.
Acceptance of ASA sub-brand, focus on three things.
First, look at weather resistance—you shouldn't just rely on the test report; you need to do QUV or xenon lamp aging comparisons, especially for exterior parts, this step shouldn't be skipped. Next, check color difference ΔE and melt index; dark parts are less affected by color fluctuation, while light-colored parts are very sensitive. Then, check the original factory packaging; both large and small packages are fine, but the batch number and manufacturer must match to prevent someone from using ABS colorant as a counterfeit for ASA.
Common pitfalls are: taking ABS, dyeing it black, and pretending it's ASA for exterior parts, which yellows after a summer of use; or using a secondary brand with a higher melt index to make thin-walled trim, resulting in incomplete molding. Exterior parts are outdoor components, and when it comes to weather resistance, you can't skimp on anything.

There is a client in Changzhou who makes automotive exterior parts. Previously, to save money, they used regular ABS for the exterior mirror housings. After being installed on cars for one summer, they turned yellow and discolored. The OEM's return rate once reached 8%, and the compensation amount was much higher than the price difference of the materials.
Later, we switched to the selected subsidiary brand of ASA from a major imported manufacturer. The color difference ΔE in actual measurements fluctuates only within single digits. After QUV aging, the appearance shows no obvious difference compared to the main brand. After being installed on cars for a summer, it does not turn yellow, the return rate is kept below 0.5%, and the cost per ton of material is reduced by a notable amount.
