I didn't directly answer whether I could buy it. I first asked him a question:

Are the scopes of these three quotes the same?

He paused for a moment and said, "Aren't they all unit prices?"

I said: It's different. First, clarify three things—whether tax is included, delivery or self-pickup, and the payment terms in days.

The fact is:

This is not to say that C Company suddenly became expensive—it is still cheap by its own standards. What this means is that the customer originally thought they were saving 6.2 units of money, but in reality, the negotiation was over a difference of 3.1 units and a bunch of things outside the standard.

When it comes to price comparison, if you only look at the numbers, it's like using a known quantity to gamble on a bunch of unknown quantities.

Price differences are the result, not the cause. To understand prices, you first need to know what they are made of.

Why does the substrate have the final say?

Take a quote of 21,000 to calculate: the substrate accounts for 60%, so in this ton there is 12,600 yuan for resin.

So when the resin market moves, the reaction will be amplified:

The resin market fluctuates by 10%, which translates to a change of 1,260 yuan in this segment — when spread over the finished product price, that's about five or six points.

This is why the quotations from modification plants often state "Valid for 7 days" and "Market price follows". This is not a gimmick; it is determined by the cost structure of this industry: when upstream costs rise, the modification end does not have enough profit margin to absorb it and can only pass it down.

It also explains an industry structure: the raw material side has a high concentration (the top ten globally account for about 60% of the capacity), which determines the lower limit of the price range; the modification side can only compete within the remaining limited space. What modification plants can optimize is mainly the rationality of the formulation, but they cannot magically create that 60% of the base material.

Regarding processing and loss, why is small batch production expensive?

A buyer has always been confused: why is it that the same material number costs so much more when ordering 500 kilograms compared to 5 tons?

The reason is very specific: when starting a twin-screw machine, the waste material must be purged. It generally takes twenty to thirty minutes for the machine to go from cold to stable, and the material produced during this period cannot be used. How much is purged depends on the diameter of the machine's screws and the color/formulation cleanliness you need—sometimes it’s dozens of kilograms, and for difficult-to-clean colors, it could be even more.

This loss spread over 5 tons is almost invisible, but spread over 500 kilograms it becomes a tangible unit cost.

So the 'minimum order quantity' is not pretentiousness; it's a fixed loss that cannot be spread out.

2. The Four Real Sources of Price Differences

The remaining 3.1 units after standardizing the caliber is what really needs to be discussed. It comes from the following four sources.

① Substrate grade: main brand, secondary brand, recycled material

This is the item with the largest price difference.

For the same grade, subsidiary grade material is one level lower than the standard grade, and recycled material is another level lower — because it has not gone through the 'precise sorting' stage, it is essentially a different kind of product. Its specification range is wide, batch consistency is weak, and naturally, the price is lower.

Judgment method: Require the original factory COA, approval number, and if necessary, measure the relative viscosity (reflecting the degree of polymerization).

Here is a sentence that is easy to overlook:

Sub-par materials are not fake materials; they are materials whose 'standards have not been promised.' You can use them, but you need to be clear about the level of certainty you are buying.

② The actual content of the modified system

The situation of 'nominally GF30, actually GF15' does exist.

Fiberglass is a cost item, using less saves money. Its impact on use is subtle—not only is the rigidity insufficient, but the shrinkage rate will also fluctuate.

Just convert it and you'll know how big this drift is:

For every 5-point decrease in fiberglass content, the shrinkage rate roughly goes back by 0.1-0.2 points. For a part that is 120mm long, 0.2% equals 0.24mm.

What does 0.24mm mean? The assembly tolerance range for many structural parts is ±0.2mm.

It might just push you from 'acceptable' to 'extremely poor'—and this issue won't show up on the day of the trial assembly; it will appear in the third month of mass production, when the weather changes or the batch is switched, in the form of 'assembly defects,' 'warping,' or 'customer complaints'.

Determination method: Ash testing (muffle furnace incineration, GB/T 9345.1) to back-calculate the actual glass fiber content. This step is very cheap and rarely done.

③ Compliance documents: They cost money

UL yellow card, food contact compliance, medical-grade verification—behind each of these lies real testing fees and annual maintenance costs, not 'casual freebies'.

So for the sentence 'our material also has V-0, half the price,' we need to follow up with a question: Do you have a yellow card?

But what is often really missed is the next sentence:

Does the wall thickness and color on the yellow card cover the part I have now?

The most expensive lesson I have encountered was like this: a factory that produces small household appliances for export had a supplier who gave a yellow card. The purchasing department glanced at it, saw the UL mark, and filed it. When the product went for certification, it was flagged—the yellow card covered a wall thickness of 1.5mm, but what he was making was 2.0mm, which exceeded the coverage.

As a result, during that round of requalification, the mold parameters were also adjusted, and the time spent was much more expensive than the material costs.

The most frustrating thing about files is that when they're not being used, they are worth nothing, but when they are needed, they are worth an entire project.

④ Service and Delivery

These are all costs. Just because this part is not in the quote doesn't mean it doesn't exist; it simply wasn't included in your order.

3. The three spots on a quotation sheet that are easiest to read incorrectly

Back to the three quotes from the beginning. In addition to including tax, shipping, and payment terms, there are three sentences worth writing into your inquiry template:

First: How many days is the quotation valid? What adjustments are made after it expires?

When the market for base materials fluctuates, a 'long-term valid' quote either becomes invalid or has already factored the risk into the unit price.

Second: What is the minimum order quantity? How is it calculated if it is below the minimum order quantity?

This sentence can help you determine whether the other party is really producing this material — some quotes are 'quoted by tonnage', and if you only buy a few hundred kilograms, the final settlement follows a different set of rules.

Third: How many days is the payment term? Can it be changed to a cash price?

The payment term itself is a price. Rough estimate: a 90-day payment term, compared to payment upon delivery, calculated at an annualized 6-8% capital occupancy, is roughly equivalent to 1.5-2% of the quoted price.

Many buyers only realize after a year of comparing prices that they have been comparing different things all along. This set of checklists is recommended to keep:

A judgment in procurement: When a customer asks about the price, the question that the fewest people ask but should definitely ask is 'In what aspect is it cheaper' — is it the material grade, the actual content, the compliance documents, or the service capability? Asking 'Why is it cheaper' reveals the reason; asking 'In what aspect is it cheaper' reveals the structure. Reasons can be fabricated, but structure cannot.

5. Four Hidden Costs That Cheapness May Bring

There is a saying in the industry: the cost of materials only accounts for a part of the finished product's cost, but if the selection is wrong, all subsequent processing inputs may be wasted.

Let me finish calculating the account of the client mentioned at the beginning and show it to you (the numbers have been blurred):

When changing materials: saving slightly over thirty thousand for five tons, this account was valid at the time.

Third month: Injection molding yield dropped by about two points, and the workshop treated it as a process problem and adjusted it for a week.

Fifth month: The client found a batch of casing assemblies to be stiff and returned them.

Afterwards: replace the raw materials, carry out rectification, claim labor hours for client downtime, and go through the approval process again

Finally: you saved thirty thousand, but the extra money spent is more than ten times thirty thousand, sacrificing a client's trust in you.

Four types of accounts that are easily overlooked:

① Failure costs — reworking a batch, customer production stoppage, recalls. The magnitude of this item far exceeds the material price difference.

② Setup costs — If the batch is unstable, you have to repeatedly adjust the parameters, losing machine time and yield. What's more troublesome is that it can disguise itself as a process problem, making you work hard in the wrong direction.

③ Certification cost — If the material identity is inconsistent, the project cannot enter the customer's certification process, and the initial investment is wasted.

④ Inventory and time costs — Cheap materials often need to be purchased in large quantities at once to lock in batch numbers, tying up funds; weak spot supply capability also implies delivery risks.

Once you include these four items, the '20% off' deal often no longer applies.

6. When to pay for 'expensive' and when to compare prices

Not all situations should involve bargaining. Here’s a categorization method that works better than 'going with your gut':

Divide your items into three categories—those that if something goes wrong will be seen by the client, those that if something goes wrong only you will know, and those that if something goes wrong won't affect functionality.

This group should not compare prices, but qualifications:

Certification documents and safety compliance documents: Complete documentation is more important than unit price

Long-term mass production parts: batch stability is more important than the price of the first order

Dimensional precision parts: actual content is more important than being cheap

Transition period from trial production to mass production: Supplier responsiveness is more important than pricing

Complex parts that require technical support: being able to provide judgment is valuable in itself

One more set and it should be compared—non-load-bearing parts, internal parts, and single-use items. This is also where sub-brand materials and bulk materials should truly appear.

There is a simple method to judge whether a supplier is worth paying a little extra: see whether they explain first or remain silent after you ask 'where is the cheap part.' Someone who truly knows their cost structure answers very quickly.

Finally, a word about the 'timing of price comparison'.

Many people only start comparing prices after the model selection is finalized, which is actually the second step. The truly valuable price comparison happens during the model selection stage: for the same part, the unit price of PA66-GF30 and PA6-GF30 is different, but the wall thickness design, cooling time, and shrinkage compensation are also different—so the final unit cost is not necessarily ranked by material price.

Breaking it down, there are three items: unit cost = material weight × unit price, machine cost converted from molding cycle, and yield loss.

Combinations that have cheap materials but long cycles and high defect rates often lose in this formula. Before comparing prices, list out this formula, and you'll find the room for negotiation is much greater than 'saving two cents per kilogram'.

Conclusion

The price difference of modified nylon has never been about 'expensive or cheap'; it is about 'what you got and what you didn't get'.

Behind the numbers on the same quotation sheet, there may be completely different material grades, different actual contents, different document completeness, different delivery capabilities—even two numbers that haven't even had their calibers aligned are being compared.

So the proper procedure for comparing modified nylon is three steps: first unify the caliber, then confirm each item, and finally compare the numbers.

Back to the three quotes at the beginning. In the end, the customer didn't buy from Company C, nor from Company A — after he sent out these six sentences, Company B proactively provided the complete documents and two third-party reports. After unifying the standards, it was 20.5, the middle one, but the documents were complete and traceable.

He said something I quite agree with: 'The money saved is for this year, but the trouble caused will be next year's.'
