The subway light boxes you pass by every day, the glowing sign in front of the bubble tea shop, the transparent back panel on the back of your phone case—most of them are made of acrylic. But where do they go after they get old, worn out, or turned into scraps? Nine out of ten purchasers can't answer, and the remaining one is probably someone who works in the industry.

Let's take two minutes to get to know the main character. Acrylic's scientific name is polymethyl methacrylate, abbreviated as PMMA, commonly known as 'organic glass'—its transparency can compete with ordinary glass, yet it weighs only half as much, doesn't shatter, and is easy to process. It is commonly used in advertising light boxes, display racks, car headlight covers, skylights, and stationery decorations. The sources of recycled PMMA mainly come from two streams: one is the scraps and defective sheets produced during factory casting and extrusion processes, known in the industry as 'post-industrial waste.' It is clean and uniform, considered top-quality material among recycled PMMA. The other is discarded advertising boards, lightboxes, and lamp covers, referred to as 'post-consumer waste.' This type is somewhat dirty, more varied, and harder to sort. The former can be crushed, washed, and directly reprocessed into pellets, while the latter sometimes requires more in-depth processing, being heated and depolymerized into MMA monomers before being repolymerized into sheets. In terms of applications, recycled PMMA is mainly used in lightbox panels, advertising signs, light guide plates, stationery, and daily display items—places where transparency is required but doesn't necessarily have to be from entirely virgin material. When 'recycled acrylic' is mentioned, many people's immediate impression is: yellowing, graying, black spots, and cracking after half a year. This impression is not entirely wrong—it refers to the most rough types of recycled sheets and does not represent all recycled PMMA.

If you shake your head as soon as you hear 'recycled acrylic,' that's really unfair to it. PMMA is actually one of the rare stars among transparent plastics — after being remelted, its performance can still approach that of new material, provided you understand where the money is spent and where the pitfalls lie. The light transmittance of new PMMA is between 92% and 93%, with the sheet being perfectly clear inside without any haze. Those recycled sheets on the market with light transmittance dropping below 80%, appearing gray when looking through them, have issues not because they were 'recycled,' but due to poor sorting at the front end — the sheets got mixed with PS, PC, or residual adhesive, ink, and dust on the surface weren't properly cleaned. After melting, all of these turn into tiny impurities in the sheet, scattering the light as it passes through.

Another situation is repeatedly re-melting the material without adding stabilizers; the molecular chains break shorter and shorter, and the material yellows faster. New sheets with UV absorbers can withstand outdoor use for five to six years without yellowing; materials that are re-melted back and forth without an appropriate system may start yellowing, becoming brittle, and cracking within a year. By the way, cast sheets and extruded sheets are also different: cast sheets have a higher molecular weight, better toughness, and uniform light transmission, making them the main choice for lightboxes and display racks; extruded sheets have higher production efficiency and lower cost, suitable for lampshades and daily-use items. When recycling, scrap from cast sheets is generally more favored than extruded material because it's cleaner at the base and its performance can withstand another round of melting. Therefore, the phrase 'recycled does not equal inferior' needs a premise for PMMA: recycled material from a clean source, properly sorted, and processed under controlled conditions can easily maintain a light transmittance of over 90%; whereas material from mixed sources, poorly cleaned, and repeatedly re-melted is the board that turns gray and yellow. The difference is never about 'whether it is recycled' but about 'whether it is recycled cleanly.'

There are two paths for acrylic recycling: one is remelting and remanufacturing, and the other is breaking it down into monomers for reuse.

Many people don't know that the recycling of PMMA is not exactly the same as the 'wash clean and granulate' approach used for PP and PE. It actually has two paths. Only by distinguishing these two paths can you know whether the material in your hands is worth the price.

The first method is called physical recycling, which is also the mainstream method for recycling PMMA pellets on the market. Clean cast scraps are first sorted—separating transparent sheets from colored sheets and different grades—then crushed, washed, and stripped of surface protective films and inks. After drying, they are sent into an extruder to make pellets. This process is mature and cost-effective, and in PMMA extrusion, a considerable proportion of recycled material can be mixed in according to quality requirements. Its bottleneck lies in the fact that the molecular chains have already been broken once or twice, so the mechanical and optical properties gradually decline. Therefore, the number of times it can be remelted is limited; the more it is recycled, the more yellow and brittle it becomes.

The second method is called chemical recycling, also known as depolymerization. PMMA as a material is very 'principled'—when heated to over 200 degrees, its molecular chains break apart link by link like a zipper, reverting back to MMA monomers. By collecting and distilling the gases produced, high-purity MMA monomers can be obtained and then repolymerized into sheets, producing items whose performance is almost indistinguishable from new material. In the industry, there are cast sheets made entirely from recycled MMA (rMMA) with light transmittance up to 93%. Academically, vacuum pyrolysis at around 420°C can recover MMA with a purity of about 95% and a yield of around 80%. This route is expensive, but it is the true 'back-to-monomer' closed loop, with a significantly lower carbon footprint than virgin material, and it is more recognized by export and brand customers.

For procurement, remembering these two paths is enough: if you want it cheap and make opaque or semi-transparent structural parts, recycled physical pellets will suffice; if you want transparency and to pass optical standards, you need to ask exactly where the material comes from and how much is mixed in. Here's an easily overlooked point: regardless of which path you take, front-end sorting and cleaning are the real dividing line. Post-consumer waste is mixed with adhesive paper, spray ink, and other plastic scraps, which cannot be fully cleaned by manual sorting. A proper factory will use near-infrared sorting to separate PMMA from PS and PC, then go through multiple stages of crushing, hot water washing, and friction washing to remove residual ink and glue on the surface. The more thorough the sorting and washing, the clearer the resulting pellets; skipping this step to save a little processing cost will ultimately result in black spots in the sheets.

Why is everyone starting to take recycled PMMA seriously now? It becomes clear if you do the math. According to industry data, China generates over 500,000 tons of PMMA waste each year, and the recycling rate is still low, with a significant portion being landfilled or incinerated, which is both wasteful and increases environmental pressure. GB/T 40006.12-2025 will officially take effect from July 2026, setting standards for the light transmittance, tensile strength, Vicat softening point, and restricted substances of recycled cast sheets, and explicitly excluding hazardous waste such as medical and pesticide sources in terms of raw materials. In other words, recycled PMMA is evolving from a 'loosely traded commodity anyone can deal with' into a 'proper material backed by national standards.' For downstream users, using recycled materials that comply with national standards means a lower carbon footprint than virgin materials and better meets export and brand clients' circular economy requirements. Recycled PMMA is cheap, and the cheapness mainly comes from the material cost. For the bosses who make lightboxes, there’s always been a mental calculation: the few bucks saved on this material might be completely lost the first time it yellows. You can't just focus on the price per ton; yield, returns, and weather resistance all need to be taken into account together.

For parts that are exposed to long-term outdoor sunlight and have high requirements for weathering yellowing resistance: ordinary recycled materials should be used with caution, and high weathering grade materials with UV-stabilized systems should be selected.

Optical-grade light guides, high-transparency observation windows, medical observation parts: make sure to choose rMMA or optical grade, don’t settle for ordinary recycled physical materials.

Export brand orders: First confirm the customer's requirements for the recycled content ratio, certification, and carbon footprint, then determine the grade.

Cheap grayboard of unclear origin: don't take the risk, black spots and yellowing can't hide under strong light.

Let me talk about a common situation around us. Ningbo Cologne New Materials Co., Ltd. handles a lot in the lightbox material industry. Below, we will reconstruct it according to common scenarios in the industry.

There is a factory in East China that makes lightboxes for chain stores, and they use a considerable amount of acrylic sheets each year. At first, the owner wanted to save money and bought a batch of recycled transparent pellets that were priced lower than the market rate to make the lightbox panels. The first couple of months, everything seemed fine, but once these lightboxes were hung in the display windows of stores in the south and exposed to the sun, after three months the panels began to yellow, and near the LED strips, tiny black spots appeared. Grab a handful and spread them on white paper, and you can easily see if they’re heavily cloudy. Also, don’t just trust verbal promises—ask for test reports on transmittance, color difference, and haze to be included with the shipment. Compare the previous batch with the current one; large fluctuations mean the batch is unstable. Anyone making light boxes knows that the panels are cut from a single sheet; if the material is mixed and black spots are scattered in the sheet, the entire panel is ruined.

After changing the materials, the overall cost of indoor lightboxes dropped, and the yield rate remained high; the batch of outdoor ones was not returned again. Anyone who has been in the lightbox business for a long time understands one principle: reducing the cost of acrylic is not about lowering the price, but about keeping the risks out.
