Choosing TPE, it's complicated when you look at it closely, but it can be simplified into five steps: hardness → coating → temperature resistance → medium → cost.

The order cannot be confused. The first two steps determine the direction, the next two steps determine life or death, and the final step decides whether to stay or leave:

Technical Golden Saying: Hardness determines the direction, rubber coating determines the system, temperature determines the grade, medium determines the formulation, and cost determines life or death — five steps, not a single one can be skipped.

Why can't the order be messed up? Because the result of the previous step is the input for the next step.

You need to determine the hardness first before you can screen the system; once the system is determined, you can talk about temperature and medium resistance; only after passing temperature and medium resistance does the cost make sense—going in reverse (asking about the price first),

It's the most common pitfall in procurement inquiries: buying cheap materials, and then having to redo the first four steps all over again.

Step one: first determine the hardness? The feel is benchmarked against a physical reference point.

Hardness is the fundamental language of TPE. Shore A is the main scale, ranging from 0 to 100, with a tactile feel for every 10-degree increment:

The same Shore A 70: SEBS is soft and sticky, TPU is elastic and tough, TPV is nearly rubber-like—the hardness dial is just the starting point; the system's characteristics are the essence of the feel. Setting hardness is not about setting a number, it's about deciding 'what kind of feel you want.'

Shore 00 This durometer must also be recognized separately: it measures ultra-soft materials. Gel pads, bionic skin, and shock-absorbing liners are between 00-30A. The Shore 00 scale is finer than the A scale, and the 0-100 range of the 00 scale feels like everything from 'tofu' to 'rubber'.

There is a practical technique for determining hardness: compare with a real sample.

Bring a sample with a satisfying feel (even if it’s not TPE), so the supplier can directly understand the hardness, the system, and the formula—it’s more intuitive than looking at ten numbers.

With a press of the hardness tester, half of the truth is revealed; with a squeeze of the sample, the whole feel is understood.

How can hardness be measured accurately?

Three details: Temperature — TPE hardness varies significantly with temperature; it can differ by 5-10 degrees between 25°C and 40°C, so testing should be done at the standard temperature; Thickness — if the sample is too thin, the reading will be harder; the standard requires a certain thickness.

Instruments—hardness readings from different manufacturers can differ by 5 degrees, so comparisons within the same system should use the same device.

The choice of durometer also has its nuances: Shore A is used for regular soft materials, Shore 00 for ultra-soft materials, and Shore D for high hardness—using the wrong scale renders the readings meaningless.

When reading the value, attention must also be paid to the reading time: the standard is 1 second for type A or 15 seconds for type D. If pressed for too long, the reading will drift. Measure three points and take the average, record the temperature, and then this is a set of usable hardness data.

The five-step method ends here: hardness determines the feel, rubber coating determines the system, temperature-resistant medium determines life and death, cost determines whether to keep or discard, and validation determines success or failure.

Every step has numbers to rely on, and every stage has samples to check — this is the significance of turning selection from experience into process.

The biggest concern for coated parts is delamination. If the coating delaminates, first check the substrate cleanliness, then check the temperature compatibility—if the material is chosen correctly but the process can't handle it, it's all in vain.

4. Verification method: The peel test is a standard procedure—the publicly known cases in the industry, such as the coating on electric tool handles, are considered passing only if the peel strength reaches above 35 N/cm and there is no delamination during thermal cycling from -40℃ to 80℃.

Choosing the wrong encapsulation system inevitably leads to delamination and rework—grafted TPE encapsulating PA forms a 'chemical bond' level connection, whereas ordinary SEBS encapsulating PA is just 'surface adhesion' and peels off easily.

Three steps for encapsulation verification: initial adhesion test (manually peel after demolding) → peel strength test (pull standard specimen) → thermal cycling (-40℃~80℃, check for delamination after cycling). Only if all three steps pass is the encapsulation considered stable.

If the temperature is one level higher, the lifespan is shortened; if the medium is not correct, it becomes useless after three days—these two things have no 'almost right,' only 'pass' or 'fail'.

How should temperature resistance be measured to be valid? Both heat aging tests (such as 1000h/70℃) and low-temperature tests (such as -40℃ bending) need to be conducted; don't just look at instantaneous temperature resistance. Not melting at 150℃ instantaneously and not losing performance at 150℃ for 1000 hours are two different concepts.

Common industry practice: TPE material suppliers generally provide aging curves and compression set data (typical value at 70°C × 22h). What you need when purchasing is this data, not a verbal promise.

How to measure the medium? Tell the supplier the actual medium in contact, temperature, and duration, so the formula can match.

Oil includes mineral oil, hydraulic oil, engine oil, all of which are different; water includes ionized water, hot water, disinfectant. The two words 'oil-resistant' are not enough—you need to specify which oil, at what temperature, and for how long; all three parameters are indispensable.

The medium test checklist can be made into a table: medium name, concentration, temperature, soaking duration, allowable changes (volume/hardness/weight).

After sampling and testing, the data speaks for itself—oral claims of 'oil resistance' don't count, only test reports matter. For the dielectric data of TPE materials, reputable suppliers provide reports from third-party or in-house laboratories.

Step Five Cost: Only by Calculating the Total Account Does It Count

The cost is not the unit price, but the cost per piece after yield rate:

Unit cost = (Material price + Processing fee + Scrap allocation) ÷ Number of good products

Cheap materials are costly because of rework: saving three cents per unit but dropping the yield by ten percentage points results in a loss. Conversely, a more expensive system that increases yield from 90% to 98% actually saves money in the overall account.

The material price differs by four yuan, the yield rate differs by nine points, and the overall cost differs by thirty percent — this is why experienced buyers calculate unit cost per piece, not unit price.

The processing window is also a hidden cost: one requires processing at 200°C, while another can be formed at 170°C, resulting in a significant difference in energy consumption; one material easily sticks to the mold, while another releases smoothly, leading to a difference of a few seconds in the cycle time.

When selecting the model, make sure to also get the injection molding parameter window; only then will the cost account be complete.

Go through the selection of three real items, and the five-step method comes alive:

How to compare quotes from five companies? First, narrow down to three companies with the correct material direction, then compare the unit cost after yield, and finally use samples from the same batch to compare the data.

A Wuhan factory applying modified materials to make wear-resistant parts experienced fast surface wear, leading to continuous customer complaints. After an investigation by Kolon, it was found that the wear resistance index of the general-grade material only reached the borderline value, and the sand particle environment in the working conditions was much harsher than the standard test.

Answer: Listen to the data. Ask the supplier to provide the basis for their recommendations (test data, cases). If they can't provide it, follow the conservative plan.

When it comes to selecting models, it's better to be strict than lenient—being strict might just cost a bit more, being lenient leads to rework and accidents.

The final step in the selection process is documentation: organize the five-step table, grade selection, test results, and batch records into one page and put it into the project file.

Many companies' selection knowledge is scattered in individuals' minds. When someone leaves, the experience is lost — documenting the selection process is a way to turn personal experience into company assets, and the cost is just a table.

There is another easily overlooked linkage with hardness: when hardness changes, other physical properties change along with it.

In the same system, as hardness increases, the tensile strength usually increases, the elongation at break decreases, the permanent compression deformation improves, and the feel becomes harder.

So 'setting the hardness first' is not isolated—it simultaneously predicts the trends of other properties of this batch of material.

Use the hardness dial for indexing, use the physical properties table for verification, and only when the two lines match can the selection be considered complete.
