Both are called recycled PPS, black material costs 11,500 per ton, bright red material 43,000 per ton, and the four big words 'recycled PPS' are printed on the material bags. The products you buy are completely different.

What's the difference? Grade.

Those making automotive connectors, electronic connectors, pump and valve liners, all claim they use recycled PPS. Some use premium bright red new material for high-end custom parts, while others press ordinary black material into invisible non-exterior structural parts.

What's even more frustrating is that this industry hasn't even issued a dedicated standard for national standards yet. The GB/T 40006 series includes PE, PP, ABS, PS, PBT, PVC, and PPE, but unfortunately, the PPS volume is omitted. Recycled PPS currently only operates under GB/T 40006.1 general rules, without its own secret code.

No national standard as a backup, grades rely entirely on industry word of mouth. Ordering without distinguishing grades is no different from blindly buying goods. This article breaks down the grading world of recycled PPS, at least after reading it you won't be a rip-off.

First, clarify what PPS is. Polyphenylene sulfide, a semi-crystalline special engineering plastic with a melting point of about 280°C, can pass UL94 V-0 without flame retardants, and below 200°C almost no solvent can dissolve it. It's naturally hard-working.

Precisely because it's so hardcore, recycled materials are so precious—virgin PPS is polycondensed in NMP solvent with p-dichlorobenzene and sodium sulfide, which has high energy consumption and a long chain. Recycling one ton saves a fraction of it than making a ton of new material.

But there is currently no national standard volume for grading recycled PPS. In the GB/T 40006 series, .2 is PE, .3 is PP, .5 is ABS, .6 is PS, .10 is PBT, .11 is PVC, .13 is PPE. After searching through it, there's no PPS volume.

So the industry can only play by four dimensions: fiberglass content, processing purpose, modification direction, and purity grade.

These four dimensions basically mean four rulers—how much fiberglass is in the material, what process can be used, which direction is modified, and how clean it is. The grade measured by these four rulers is the source of the difference between 11,000 and 43,000 on the quotation.

Fiberglass content is the hard ruler

listed on the quotation, not the color, but the number following the letters GF.

GF20. GF30, GF40, GF45, GF60—the higher the number, the higher the proportion of fiberglass. The harder, harder, and better the temperature resistance, but also the brittle and less fluid. Among all the

grades, GF40 is the unavoidable main force. Why? Because 40% fiberglass reinforced strikes a balance between strength and flowability, making it suitable for connectors and structural parts. The quotation lists show that the 1140 series is uniformly centered around GF40: 1140-9 at 25,000, 1140-73 at 19,500, 1140-72 at 19,500, 1140 black at 20,000, and 1140 black at 19,000 to 25,000 per ton.

There's an unspoken industry naming convention: 1140 is 40% fiberglass-reinforced—Poly DURAFIDE 1140A6 is the benchmark for native GF40, confirming this logic; By the same logic, 1130 roughly corresponds to the GF30 tier, and the price list lists 1130-68 black for 19,000; 1150 roughly corresponds to the GF50 grade; 1150-4F10 brown wear-resistant grade is 30,000.

Examine carefully, the first two digits of the grade, 11, are PPS substrates, and the last two digits represent glass fiber content. Seeing 1140 means it's GF40; seeing 1130 means fiberglass is one level less, softer and more flowable; 1150 means fiberglass is more stiff but harder to navigate.

Fiberglass content is the entry-level hard measure for recycled PPS—if you don't know how much fiberglass you want, reading quotes is pointless. For thin-walled connectors to flow well, GF30 is enough; For high-rigidity structural parts, GF40 is the starting point; For especially large load-bearing parts, only use GF50 or GF60.

Injection-molded extrusion fiber coatings, each follows its own path

Glass fiber content is determined by whether it's good or not, and the processing purpose determines whether the material can fit your machine.

Recycled PPS is divided into four tracks by application: injection molding, extrusion, fiber, and coating grade. The materials on these four stages have melt fingers, viscosity, and impurity tolerance are completely different approaches.

Injection molding grade is the main force, with moderate melting points and good flowability. Used for automotive high-voltage connectors, electronic connectors, relay frames, sensor brackets, and thin-walled parts ranging from 0.15 to 0.3 millimeters, all rely on it. Extruded grade melt must be stretched long and have continuous strength, used for chemical pipelines, fittings, heat exchangers, and other parts that require continuous extrusion molding. Fiber-grade fibers must be able to be stretched into filaments and used for high-temperature dust removal and filtration materials—this is the main destination for PPS fibers. Coating grades must be fine, uniform, and able to form films, used for metal surface coatings and anti-corrosion linings.

These four paths: Xinhecheng is currently one of the few domestic companies that covers all four grades: injection molding, extrusion, fiber, and coating, with an annual capacity of over 20,000 tons. In other words, for virgin materials, there aren't many options for all four grades; For recycled materials, even fewer suppliers understand all four stages.

If you choose the wrong purpose, no matter how pure the material is, it's useless—using the extrusion grade to make thin-walled connectors results in a low melt index that won't fill the mold; Using fiber-grade materials for injection-molded structural parts is even more mismatched.

Modification is the dividing line for value .

Fiberglass reinforcement is just the starting point. What really pulls apart the price per ton is the modification direction.

You need to understand this string on the quotation: Mineral Increase KW31 25,000 per ton, this is the mineral-filled grade, with mineral powder added to lower shrinkage and more stable dimensions, used for high-precision gears and cages; Conductive steel at 22,000 yuan, this is the conductive carbon fiber grade, with added carbon fiber or carbon black, lowering surface resistance to make electronic components that require anti-static and conductive properties; 1150-4F10 brown wear-resistant grade is 30,000, mixed with PTFE and graphite, self-lubricating and wear-resistant, used for pump and valve linings and seals; 817 High Toughness is 23,000, aiming for toughness, addressing the natural brittleness of recycled materials.

Also GF40 recycled PPS, ordinary reinforcement sells for around 20,000, PTFE for wear-resistant grade for 30,000, carbon fiber for conductive grade for 22,000, mineral powder for mineral powder adds 25,000. Changing the modification direction means a difference of several thousand per ton, and the work is completely different.

There is a factory in Dongguan that makes automotive high-voltage connector terminal blocks. Previously, they sourced materials from small domestic workshops, claiming they were all GF40. As a result, the glass fiber content per batch fluctuated from 32% to 45%. The terminal block size fluctuated in size by injection, and the bonding force between batches and metal terminals was 18%. After installation, the customer exceeded contact resistance standards, resulting in a 7% return rate. Later, Ningbo Kelon New Materials Co., Ltd. directly sourced PIR sprue material from Vietnam, Thailand, and Malaysia. Each batch was first tested by combustion for glass fiber content. The GF40 batch was stably compressed between 39% and 41%, the size gap narrowed to within 2%, and the return rate dropped to 0.6%.

To put it bluntly, direct procurement from multiple countries is not a marketing slogan—once the source is fixed, the glass fiber content per batch won't feel like opening a blind box. Batch controllability, stable grade, and precise GF content—these three words on the mass production line mean the terminal block doesn't require repeated machine adjustments.

First-grade and special-grade, the difference is not just one word .

Besides GF content and modification direction, there's another word on the quotation sheet that is especially easily overlooked: grade.

Same batch 1140, some are labeled as first-grade, some as special-grade. Special grade G0 black is 40,000, premium bright red is 43,000, premium grade genuine white is 35,000; Grade 1 ordinary black is 11,500, grade 1 WR series is 17,000 to 22,000.

One grade difference, one ton is over 20,000 off.

These first-grade and special grades are not exclusive to PPS; they are the common purity grading conventions in the recycled plastics industry—first-grade material ash is generally kept below 1%, second-grade 3%, and third-grade 10%. What is ash? It refers to inorganic impurities left after burning, including residual filler, silt, and distinct plastic residues. The lower the ash, the purer the material, and the more advanced the work it can do

Why can premium G0 black sell for 40,000? Not because it's brighter black, but because it has very few impurities and stable batch quality. Besides black coverage, it also requires performance to be made from virgin materials, making it suitable for high-end parts. But the 11,500-yuan grade first-grade ordinary black relies on black to cover impurities, making non-appearance, low-demand structural parts.

You use first-grade ordinary black for exterior parts, and the surface is full of small black spots; You use premium material for low-end structural parts, and you use good steel for the knife handle.

So when looking at the quotation, don't just look at the four words GF40—first clarify whether it's grade 1 or special grade—a one-word difference is a huge difference in ash content and impurities.

Several grade directions, a one-sentence summary

WR series: Domestic modification factories' own grades, subdivided by color and grade, from 17,000 WR-4-002 to 43,000 WR-4-09 bright red, all with the same WR prefix, with a wide range of grades. You must provide the full model before ordering.

Ryton R-4: Solvay's original GF40 benchmark, imported modified material costs about 38,000 per ton, with recycled material benchmarked against it for performance reference.

Fortron 1140L4: Celanese original grade, balancing fluidity and heat resistance, commonly used in high-end electronic connectors.

DURAFIDE 1140A6: Baoli's GF40 certified grade, 1140 equals GF40 This industry common sense comes from it.

Torelina: Toray's PPS grade line, with a chemical recycling route leading the way, and the strength after recycling is close to virgin .

New Hecheng NHU series: The main domestic virgin product, with a leading market share in China, full coverage of injection molded extruded fiber coatings at level 4, serving as the main reference for benchmarking recycled materials against domestic virgin products.

Final note: Level 7 material selection tips

1. Ask about fiberglass: GF20, GF30, GF40, GF45, GF60. For thin-walled parts, choose from low grade; for high rigidity, choose high.

2. Grade inquiry: 1140 is GF40, 1130 is about GF30, 1150 is about GF50, the last two digits are for glass fiber;

3. Ask about uses: injection molding, extrusion, fiber, coating; melt fingers and processes must match;

4. Ask about modification: reinforcement, mineral enhancement, conductivity, wear resistance, toughness; direction determines value;

5. Ask about grade: First-grade ash content is about 1% or less, premium grade is purer, price difference is 20,000;

6. Ask about color: black covers impurities, light colors require the original pigment, don't forcibly alter black materials;

7. Ask about batch: Dare to provide a glass fiber content and ash content test report for each batch? If you don't dare to provide it, be cautious.

Final note: The grade of recycled PPS essentially refers to the price of glass fiber content, modification direction, and purity. The national standard hasn't released a special volume yet; this is a set of industry rules made up by itself. If you don't learn it, you'll have to pay for others' tuition.
