The moment I opened the box, there was a pungent smell; the oil is the prime suspect.
TPE odor, oil is the number one suspect: oil, additives, base material. Conclusion first: the source of the odor is most likely in the oil, don't settle—it is the oil that is the source of the odor.
The biggest trap for TPE odor: if the oil is not selected cleanly, the smell cannot be suppressed. If there are problems in the oil-filling process—the oil is the root of the odor.
TPE odor is a quality checkpoint: abnormal smell or excessive odor are problems. Only when the source is correct will the odor be stable—this is a quality checkpoint, don’t skimp on it.
Oil is the storage of smell, so why check the oil first?
TPE has a large oil content, and the quality of the oil determines the smell. If the oil is impure, the smell will be strong — the oil is the switch for the smell.
Small molecule additives tend to produce odor: residue of lubricants and stabilizers. Additive residue leads to strong smell — additives are accomplices of odor.
High processing temperatures also produce flavor: degradation products. When the temperature is too high, the smell becomes stronger—temperature is an accelerator of odor.
Grades, testing, acceptance, how to control the smell
Odor level: divided into levels 1-5. The interior should be level 1 — this is the measure of odor.
Smell Test: Identify odors according to the standard. The test is recorded in the acceptance—testing is the examination for odors.
Odor acceptance: Only accept goods if the grade meets the standard. If it exceeds the grade, reject it—acceptance is the gate for odor.

Pitfall 1: Treat it as dirty. Skip the oil step, and no matter how you try to cover the taste, it will come through — checking the oil is a must.

Three questions: what type of oil, what grade, what testing standards. One inspection: actual smell test — three questions and one inspection, the supplier's background is clear.
Oil verification must come first: first clarify whether it is naphthenic oil or paraffin oil, then discuss the odor grade—oil is the source of the off-flavor.
Making sample retention a habit: retain samples for each batch, and re-test the smell according to the batch. When changing materials between batches, compare first before scaling up—the batch is stable, and customer complaints are few.

When the material just comes out of the mold, it has a strong oily smell, and even after a week it doesn't dissipate — low odor isn't achieved by covering it with fragrance, but through the oil and volatilization process. If you mask it with fragrance, a high-temperature smell will reappear inside the cabin.
Before blaming the formula for the strange odor, first check the oil. The odor varies with different grades of paraffin oil and naphthenic oil; the more oil filled, the stronger the odor in the warehouse. Oil is the primary suspect.
The interior odor should pass Level 1, standard parts Level 2, and Level 4 requires immediate material replacement. Acceptance should be based on the odor level inside the entire vehicle cabin; don't rely solely on your nose, as it is more tolerant than instruments.
The smell is the 'breath' of TPE; if the oil isn’t fully removed, it keeps coming out. Starting with low-odor resin followed by degassing and adsorption in three steps is more honest than spraying fragrance afterwards.
After switching to low-odor oil and reducing volatility, the cabin odor dropped from level 4 to level 2, and the interior parts passed inspection and were released that month. Passing with new materials does not count; smell it again after accelerated aging.
Ninety percent of TPE's odor comes from the oil filling, not the resin itself. Cycloaliphatic oil has a lower odor than paraffin oil by one level. When the oil filling ratio exceeds 30%, a high temperature inside the compartment will cause the odor to return, and the vacuum devolatilization temperature needs to be raised above 140°C to suppress it.
Low-odor TPE relies on three steps: low-odor SEBS resin, vacuum devolatilization, and activated carbon adsorption. Using fragrance to mask the smell is a last resort; after car doors are exposed to the sun in summer, the odor comes back. Interior parts are accepted according to VDA 270 odor level 3.0 or below.
The cabin odor should be accepted if it is within VDA 270 level 3.0; don't rely solely on your nose. The nose is more tolerant than instruments, and the smell can reappear after being exposed to the summer sun. The proper way is a three-step process with low-odor SEBS: reducing volatilization, adding absorption, and then adsorption.
Starting with low-odor resin, then adding de-volatilization and adsorption in three steps, is more honest than spraying fragrance afterward. Paraffin oil and naphthenic oil have different grades which affect odor levels, and the more oil added, the stronger the smell in the warehouse; oil is the number one suspect.
Low-odor TPE is accepted according to VDA 270 odor grade within 3.0; the nose is more tolerant than instruments. The fragrance mask comes back after being exposed to summer sun. Only source low-odor SEBS combined with vacuum degassing at 140°C plus active carbon adsorption can control it.
