Baby bottle materials

Mainstream PP is food-grade PP—melting index 8-15 g/10 minutes, FDA-compliant. PPSU is a high-end solution—amber color, temperature resistant above 200°C, and does not deform after 1000 disinfections. Glass baby bottles are a different line—not unfolded.

Toy age groups

Toy is divided into three age groups: 0-3 years (strictest), 3-6 years (medium), 6+ (normal).

0-3 year old toys must be food-grade PP/PE—any parts that may be bitten cannot use PA/ABS.

Toys aged 3-6 can be ABS/PP—but must not contain BPA/phthalates. 6+ Generally, ABS/PA are acceptable—but it depends on whether they are ingested. The core reason for age groups is that children of different ages bite in different areas.

Impact resistance boundaries

Baby toys must withstand drop impacts—1.5 m high and won't break after 10 drops.

0-3 year old toys must be made of PP—PP has better toughness than ABS.

For large toys, the specific weight is needed—light PP, heavy PA66-GF20 reinforced.

Drop tests must comply with ASTM F963—the mandatory toy safety standard in the US, equivalent to GB 6675 in China.

The necessity of antibacterial treatment

Antibacterial in baby products is a trend—antibacterial PA/antibacterial PP has become widespread. Silver ion antibacterial + zinc ion antibacterial is the mainstream solution. An antibacterial rate of R> 2.0 (E. coli) is the industry benchmark.

Antibacterial agents must be food-grade—controversial materials like nano-silver cannot be used. Long-lasting antibacterial testing—even after 1000 wipes, the antibacterial rate remains > 1.5 is the passing line.

Extended judgment: Hidden variables in baby products

There are three hidden variables in baby products that are easily missed. First is ink and coating—printing ink and surface coatings must be food-grade and must not contain heavy metals—this is a strict requirement in GB 4806.7.

Second, color fastness—babies chew toys, pigments must not fall off—wet friction color fastness > level 4 is the passing line. Third is odor—odor comes from residual monomers and additives; olfactory test < level 3 (slightly acceptable) is key—many manufacturers overlook this.

Deeper layer: The origin of several numbers

The compliance red line must be drawn out first. The national standard for baby entry parts is the strictest category among food contact materials, with migration limits applied according to the strictest group. PA itself is not on the prohibited list, but caprolactam monomer residues have special limits. When selecting materials, manufacturers must provide food-grade monomer residue reports; the price difference between regular and food-grade is not large, so there is no reason to take risks.

The real role of nylon must be placed correctly. The baby bottle body uses PPSU and PP; nylon's value lies in the structural parts and film. The mesh bag for the baby bag uses PA woven or monofilament, which is wear-resistant and resistant to tearing. The pad liner bag uses PA multilayer film, which has much better oxygen resistance than PE monolayer. Different parts of the same toy require different grades; the material list must be listed by part and cannot cover the entire toy in one form, which is the most common issue during review.

Steam sterilization accounts. Mother and baby parts generally need to be steamed above 121°C for 30 minutes; nylon can withstand a single cycle, but after dozens of repeated sterilizations, water absorption causes dimensional shifts. For parts with fitting positions, tolerances must be reserved for water absorption increments. This data can be provided by the manufacturer, so proactively request it; exposed parts without data should be cautious.

Drop test 1.5 meters to hard floor, toughened nylon performs well in impact resistance. However, the migration risk of toughening agents needs to be reassessed; for entry parts, toughening systems must be made of food-contact compliant grades. When mechanical performance conflicts with compliance, compliance takes priority—there is no second choice.

Surface antibacterial is both a selling point and a drawback. Inorganic silver-based antibacterial agents must have corresponding compliance reports; boasting antibacterial data without reporting data is like handing materials to professional counterfeiters in the maternal and infant category. Every antibacterial word on promotional materials must have a test report number on the back.

Engineering Testing: Four Mandatory Tests

Test 1: Food Contact Compliance. PP / PPSU certified by GB 4806.7 + FDA 21 CFR + EU 10/2011 triple certification, PA only partially approved — baby bottles are advised not to use PA.

Test 2: Drop impact. 1.5 m high 10 drops, PP non-breaking rate 95%, ABS non-break rate 80%—baby toy PP is preferred.

Test 3: Disinfected 1000 times. PPSU does not deform after 1000 boiling water disinfections; after 500 times, PP slightly deforms; PA66 turns yellow after 100 cycles—PPSU is best for baby bottles.

Test 4: Long-lasting antibacterial effect. Silver ion antibacterial PP has an antibacterial rate R > 2.5; after 1000 wipes, it still > 2.0; after 1000 wipes, it drops to 0.5—long-lasting antibacterial effect is essential.

Question 2: What to do if nylon parts have odors? Oligomer residues are the source of odor; food-grade grades plus post-processing can suppress odors. The method is to soak in 90°C hot water and smell it; only batches that have no odor after soaking can be put on the production line. This inspection is written on the workshop bulletin board, which is more effective than writing it in the quality manual.

Question 3: What's the difference between exporting to the US and Europe? The FDA in the US and California at 65, and EN71 in Europe—the test items and limits are all different. Exported parts are tested by target market, and a single report goes global—this is the most common pitfall in the industry.

Reverse Case and Final Judgment

A factory replaced a toy's gear with toughening nylon, and all performance tests passed. Three months after launch, it was found that the toughening agent was in excess of the standard, and the recall cost was eight times the total value of the batch. No one in this case was fraudulent; the toughening agent itself was compliant but not on the licensing list for that use. Compliance for use and material compliance are two different things; many factories only checked the latter.

The order for selecting materials for the mother and baby category is always to first set the compliance path, then discuss performance, and finally discuss cost. If the order is reversed, the money saved earlier is returned with interest later.

These three pitfalls are all checklists you must check before mass production. If one is missing, it will all burst in bulk, and repairing one screw costs three times more than new parts.

Additional note: Document packages, traceability, and rhythm matching

must be obtained from the material factory before development. A food contact compliance report is opened and reviewed, containing three conditions: use, temperature, and contact duration. If any one is exceeded, the report cannot be cited. Many factories archive the report as soon as they get a scanned copy, only to find that when an incident occurs, the usage section in the report states room temperature contact.

The document package must be put into use, checked item by item according to the actual working condition of the parts; if not, conduct retesting. This step is indispensable, as there is no room for trial and error in the mother and baby category.

Batch traceability must be done individually. Toy recalls are tracked by batch and box, from material batch to mold table, mold machine down to box number. This chain must be designed from the start: code format, box label fields, ledger linkage. If an incident occurs and the data is incomplete, the recall scope can only be magnified, and the more you magnify, the more money you get.

E-commerce channels professionally combat counterfeiting is a stress test unique to the mother and baby category. Every material claimed on the detail page was anti-static, antibacterial, food-grade, and was checked verbatim for the report. The claim matched the report's conclusion verbatim, the report meeting relevant standards, and the detail page said it was absolutely safe—this difference was a claim letter.

Copywriting and legal team sharing a claim comparison sheet was much cheaper than hiring a lawyer after an incident.

The pace of new product development must match the inspection cycle. Compliance testing for mother and baby parts starts at four weeks, with an extra week added to the scheduling. The development plan schedules testing cycles to five weeks, with material changes freezing points set before mold opening, and the cost of one mold change stitch is enough to redo the entire inspection three times. If the timing is right, compliance won't be choked; if you make a mistake, every step will be affected.

Switching agencies midway is like redoing previous inspections. Every week before finalization has value; wasting it on scheduling is the biggest pity.

The way material suppliers cooperate is also important. They get involved during the pre-screening stage, and after mold trials, they can save the project an average of three weeks.

Extension: Three details from the channel

Detail No. 1, the material feel in the unboxing experience. The first thing moms do is feel the edges. Even if the burrs on the parting line are only 0.1 millimeters, the tactile feel is cheap. When designing the parting position for entry parts, avoid the path your fingers frequently touch.

Detail Two: Storage slots for gift boxes. Toys with storage boxes can cause chips to fall off from friction between the storage slot and plastic parts, and the white friction marks on the dark storage lining are considered quality issues and poorly reviewed in photos. Pair materials with velvet padding or modified friction pairs.

Detail Three: Supply of replacement parts. The mesh bag for Yao Yao bags is a consumable part; after six months on the market, replacement packs are unavailable, so users have to discard the whole piece, and repurchases are cut off at the material supply chain. Single supply of consumable parts and the main party initiate the project simultaneously; don't wait for stock shortages to restock.
