The bathroom has a sewage smell, and the customer said the floor drain smells. The sealing lip is not properly fitted; it can block water but cannot block the odor.

The aftertaste isn't because it wasn't cleaned, it's because the lips didn't seal tightly.

The floor drain sealing ring is a 'component for sealing and odor prevention': sealing, odor-proof, and water-resistant. The material must be sealing, odor-proof, and water-resistant — conclusion first: SEBS-based TPE is mainstream for floor drain sealing rings; for odor-proof floor drains, TPV is preferred.

The biggest pitfall of the floor drain sealing ring: the rubber coating is 0.5mm thick, and the feel is two different levels. If the thickness varies a bit, the feel changes— the thickness of the rubber coating is the feel line of the sealing ring.

The floor drain sealing ring is a functional component: odor leakage and water leakage are both problems. Choosing the right material makes the floor drain stable — functional components, don’t skimp on material costs.

Daily soaking with odor and leak protection, why use TPE?

Reasons for using TPE for floor drain sealing rings: sealing is achievable, odor prevention is achievable, water resistance is achievable, and efficiency is high—together, these four make it suitable for sealing rings.

Sealing is key: leak-proof sealing. Seal testing is written into the acceptance criteria—if there is a smell, it is a problem.

Flavor prevention cannot be neglected: isolate odors. Include flavor prevention testing in the acceptance criteria—any odor leakage is a problem.

Water flow, odor prevention, cleanliness—what does each of the three checks inspect?

Water flow condition: continuous water flow for a long period. Water resistance data must be tested—deformation is a problem.

Odor prevention conditions: odor isolation. Odor prevention data must be verified—odor leakage indicates a problem.

Cleaning condition: Repeated cleaning. Chemical resistance data must be tested—if it turns white, that's a problem.

Table interpretation: Rubber seals well but vulcanizes slowly; TPE is efficient — mainstream seals use TPE, high-end ones use rubber.

Reading the table: Use calipers to measure the rubber-coated layer; a difference of half a millimeter in thickness is clearly noticeable to the touch — the thicker the coating, the softer it feels, while if it's too thin, the hard shell is exposed and feels rough.

The thickness of the coating is the tactile line of the sealing ring.

The thickness of the lips is judged by touch; thickness and thinness are two different matters.

Pitfall 1: Arbitrary thickness. If you try to save money by making the coating thicker, the feel is immediately compromised—the coating thickness of the seal must have its tolerance specified in the drawings.

Pitfall 2: Prevent odor leakage testing. Odor leakage—preventive odor testing is a must.

Pitfall 3: Undetected chemical resistance. Whitening — chemical resistance testing is essential.

Thickness, hardness, resilience—ask before making the circle

Three questions: What is the coating thickness, according to what standard is the odor resistance measured, and what is the cleaning method? One verification: test with actual use—three questions and one verification, the supplier’s background is clear.

Thickness verification must come first: measure with calipers according to the drawings, and randomly check the thickness of the coated layer for each batch. First determine the thickness, then discuss the price — the coating thickness is the tactile reference line of the sealing ring.

Making sample retention a habit: retain samples from each batch, seal them to prevent odor, and retest by batch. When changing batch materials, compare first before scaling up—the more stable the batch, the fewer the customer complaints.

The floor drain gasket is the 'cleaner' in TPE — it is soaked in dirty water every day, and chemical resistance is more critical than water pressure resistance.

Daily exposure to cleaners and hair treatment agents requires selecting SEBS-based formulations that resist exudation; surface white residue and stickiness are mostly due to excessive oiling.

The compression amount is designed at 15%-25%, and if it is compressed over 30%, it will not seal any odor. Odor prevention relies on the rebound fitting of the ring body; materials with compression greater than 30% should not be used long-term. Water leakage is checked and accepted through pressure testing.

PVC floor drain rings are cheap but release phthalates, while TPE has no phthalates and does not require vulcanization. Floor drains discharge water every day and are close to the home environment; TPE has low emissions and is recyclable, so the environmental benefits are clear when you do the math.

Three steps of acceptance: first, run water to check for leaks; then disassemble and check for odors; finally, perform a chemical resistance soak. After soaking, the gasket is only approved if it does not dissolve, swell, or change color; from the same batch, a 6mm thick test piece is kept to measure Shore A at 23°C.

Flavor protection failure is not due to a small ring, but because the ring's compression varies too much and there is insufficient long-term rebound. Using a formulation with lower compression variation is more fundamental than changing the size; exports to Europe and America for food contact and REACH reports are checked by batch.

The floor drain sealing ring is hidden underwater, so the TPE needs to be water-resistant, scale-resistant, have low compression set, and if compressed for too long without rebounding, it will cause odor and leakage.

Long-term immersion under pressure, compression deformation is crucial; choose a formula with low compression deformation, leave 15%-25% of sealed compression, so that after long-term pressure it rebounds to the original state and seals tightly with the floor drain.

Floor drain components often come into contact with sewage and cleaning agents, so they need to be resistant to hydrolysis and chemicals. Ordinary SEBS-based materials tend to foam and become sticky over time; choose a water-resistant formulation, test the hardness and compression after soaking in water for each batch, and ensure they are installed without leaks or odor before increasing the quantity.

Floor drain sealing ring final inspection: water immersion pressure change, scale resistance, and sealing are checked with each batch.

After each batch of samples is soaked in water, test hardness and compression deformation, and rebound after prolonged pressure; when changing material for a batch, first fill a small batch into the floor drain for a water test, and only increase the amount if there is no leakage or odor.

Cologne Customer Case: Rebound insufficient and does not meet standards, adjusting parameters causes odor upon acceptance

A household daily-use factory in Beijing had insufficient rebound in floor drain sealing rings, and the performance of functional components did not meet standards. Cologne cooperated to adjust the injection molding parameters (mold temperature/material temperature/holding pressure), and the rebound recovered. The odor level passed the client's acceptance standards. With the parameter window locked, rebound is stabilized from the source—the rebound issue should first be checked in the parameters and then in the formulation.

Summary

Selection of floor drain sealing rings: determine the thickness first, then test the sealing. For a molded thickness of 0.5mm, the tactile feel is checked with two samples; the molded thickness is based on the tactile line.
