As soon as it powers on, it's full of silver streaks, and the technician worked until midnight. Skipping this step during material drying means all the leaks have to be fixed during mass production.

Silver streaks are not a temperature control issue; the material wasn't dried.

TPE injection molding process, the parameters are like a net: drying material, mold temperature, material temperature, holding pressure. Here's the conclusion first: if the moisture is not completely removed, everything later turns white-adjusted — drying the material is the foundation of molding.

The biggest pitfall in TPE injection molding: the step of drying the material cannot be skimped. If you skip on drying, silver streaks will appear—the drying step is the very first hurdle in molding.

TPE injection molding is a craft: issues like silver streaks and material shortage are common problems. Only when the process is correct will the yield be stable—it's a craft, don't skip steps.

Moisture is the source of silver streaks; why dry the material first?

TPE absorbs moisture quickly, and water is the source of silver streaks. The drying test should be included in the process—if not dried, it's a problem.

The drying temperature is determined according to the grade: SEBS base 60-80℃. The drying time is determined according to the thickness: 2-4 hours.

Drying material is not just a formality: measure the moisture content for acceptance. Only if the moisture is below 0.1% can it enter the hopper—the moisture content is the pass line for drying material.

Mold temperature, material temperature, holding pressure—how to set the parameters

Mold temperature: SEBS base 30-50°C, TPV 40-60°C. Low mold temperature results in obvious weld lines — mold temperature affects the appearance lines.

Material temperature: SEBS base 170-200°C, TPV 180-210°C. Low material temperature, insufficient material—material temperature is the filling line.

Holding pressure: Adjust according to the size of the piece. If the holding pressure is low, shrinkage occurs—holding pressure is the key to dimensions.

SEBS vs TPV, how different are the injection molding parameters

Table reading: Parameters are divided by system, don't take all sets together—SEBS is general-purpose, TPV is oil-resistant.

Adjust according to the system, and the parameters won't be off.

How to read the table: pair the moisture content, temperature, and time item by item. Once the moisture exceeds the limit, silver streaks and flash edges appear together — follow the system for drying temperature and duration; skipping a step is not an option.

Drying the material is the foundation of molding.

Skipping drying the roasted material results in the recurring appearance of silver streaks and air streaks.

Pitfall 1: Saving on drying materials. Running the machine with damp pellets leads to surface silver streaks and bubbles—TPE molding with moisture causes an immediate drop in yield.

Pitfall 2: Messing with parameters. Silver streaks due to lack of material — adjust according to the grade.

Pitfall three: Not measuring moisture content. Silver pattern — moisture content must be measured.

Moisture content, mold temperature, material temperature—ask before starting the machine

Three questions: what system, how thick the parts, what appearance requirements. One inspection: actual measured yield of trial molds—three questions and one inspection, the supplier's details are clear.

Drying verification must be done first: set the temperature and duration according to the resin system, and only put it on the machine after the moisture content meets the standard. Drying first, then talk about yield——drying is the foundation of molding.

Make sample retention a habit: retain samples for each batch and re-test parameters batch by batch. Before scaling up with a new batch of materials, compare first—stable batches mean fewer customer complaints.

You can't skip the step of drying the material—if moisture enters the mold, you’ll get silver streaks, bubbles, and hazing. Adjust the drying hopper temperature according to the material grade, and only inject mold when the moisture content meets the standard; store the dried material sealed to prevent moisture absorption, because once it absorbs moisture, you have to dry it all over again.

The molding temperature of TPE is lower than that of PP, and mold temperature should not just copy PP parameters. The screw should be designed for TPE compression ratio; insufficient venting causes burning on the product surface. If the draft angle is insufficient, soft rubber sticks to the mold.

The product surface has mottling and many silver streaks. It is not due to poor material, but because the drying and venting were insufficient. Every step in the process is necessary; skipping a step will cause problems. Process parameters are written into the process card and executed according to the card.

TPE is a 'soft-tempered' material that is 'afraid of water and heat'—if it's not baked enough, it develops silver streaks; if it's overbaked, it degrades. The temperature should be adjusted according to the grade, and cooling must be even; if not, it will deform. Trial molding should start with small batches, and parameters should be confirmed before scaling up.

After the process parameters are fixed, the appearance passes continuously for 20 molds, with no silver streaks or burning observed. Process parameters are recorded and archived, and batches are traceable; molding issues are recorded in a ledger, and similar cases should first be checked in the ledger.

TPE injection molding is not better with higher temperatures; soft materials stick to the mold, and hard materials are underfilled. The screw and temperature window must be adjusted according to the system.

The general temperature for SEBS base material is 160-200℃. If the temperature is too high, it will decompose and become sticky; if too low, the surface will fog. If the mold temperature is slightly high, demolding is easier. The residual material in the barrel must be cleaned thoroughly before changing colors, and soft rubber parts should not use gates that are too small.

For TPE, when experiencing sticking to the mold or flash, do not increase the clamping force first; moisture content and back pressure are the root cause.

TPE moisture-absorbing pellets easily develop silver streaks and stick to the mold; dry the material according to the grade, ensure sufficient back pressure for uniform plasticization, leave enough draft angle for soft rubber demolding, and confirm the appearance and dimensions with a small batch trial before mass production.

TPE injection molding final inspection: moisture content, appearance, and small trial dimensions are checked with each batch.

Measure the moisture content before starting each batch, conduct small batch mold trials to check for silver streaks, flash, and dimensions; lock the parameters according to the grade, and confirm with a trial mold before switching materials and increasing the quantity.

Ultimately, injection molding machine adjustment is about getting the material temperature, drying, and holding pressure all properly set at once.

Set the material temperature according to the system, measure the moisture content accurately before starting the machine, and maintain pressure to follow up on gate shrinkage; keep samples from each batch to check appearance and dimensions, and confirm before increasing the quantity.

Whether the TPE machine runs stably can be known after a small batch test mold. No silver streaks, flash, or sticking to the mold, and dimensions are controlled, only then are the parameters written into the work instructions.

Cologne Customer Case: Batch Color Difference Complaints, Small Trial Production Delivered in 7 Days

A plastic injection processing factory in Changzhou had noticeable color differences in TPE injection parts, and the finished products were frequently complained about. Cologne cooperated on small trial production to verify before mass production, stabilizing the color difference and reducing the delivery cycle to within 7 days. Small trial production locks the color difference before mass production—the color difference issue starts with the pigment system.

Summary

For TPE injection molding, drying the material is done first, then parameters are adjusted. The drying step cannot be skipped, as the drying is the foundation.
