The comb pulls hair as soon as you comb it, and the client says it pinches the scalp. If the comb teeth are not adjusted for hardness correctly, comfort and hair breakage are on a fine line.
Pulling hair is not about brushing hard, it's about the tip of the teeth not being the right hardness
A comb is a 'tooth shock-absorbing component': soft, shock-absorbing, and anti-static. The material should be soft, shock-absorbing, and anti-static—the conclusion first: for comb teeth, soft rubber using SEBS-based TPE is mainstream; for air cushion combs, TPV composite is retained.
The biggest flaw of the comb: if the thickness increases by 0.3mm, the shock absorption decreases by one level. If the thickness is slightly off, the shock absorption decreases by one level — the thickness is the comb's shock absorption line.
A comb is an everyday item: issues arise when it is hard or cracked. Choosing the right material ensures the comb's durability—everyday items are not the place to skimp on materials.
Combing hair every day with heat, why use TPE?
Reasons for using TPE for combs: can be made soft, can provide shock absorption, can be made anti-static, high efficiency—together, these four make it suitable for combs.
Softness is key: the feel of the comb teeth. Softness testing is included in acceptance inspections—if it hardens, it's a problem.
Shock absorption cannot be skimped on: cushioning when combing hair. Include shock absorption testing in the acceptance inspection — if you can feel the vibration, it's a problem.
Combing, heating, static electricity—what to look at for each of the three stages
Combing operation condition: combing cushioning. Shock absorption data needs to be checked — the vibration sensation is the problem.
Heating condition: Air-blow heating. Temperature resistance data must be verified—deformation means there is a problem.
Static electricity condition: anti-static. Anti-static data must be verified—frizzing, that's the problem.
Soft TPE vs. hard PP, which one to choose for a comb
| Dimension | SEBS-based TPE | PP |
|---|
| Soft | Good | hard |
| Shock absorption | Can be done | poor |
| Anti-static | Can be done | general |
| Temperature resistant | Can be done | Good |
| Cost | Medium-high | Low |
| Purpose | soft teeth | Hardened tooth |
Table reading: PP is cheap but hard, with poor shock absorption; TPE is soft with good shock absorption — soft-tooth TPE, hard-tooth PP.
Choose according to tooth shape: hard teeth PP, soft teeth TPE.
No tugging, no itching, no static electricity; test these four items for acceptance
| Thickness | Shock absorption | Judgment |
|---|
| 1.0 mm | Weak | relatively thin |
| 1.3 mm | Moderate | Meet the standard |
| 1.6mm | Good | Meet the standard |
| 1.9mm | Too soft | Somewhat thick |
Table reading: Measured with a comb-tooth soft rubber layer caliper, a slightly thicker cushion adds a bit more—thickness difference is just a few tenths of a millimeter, and the soft springy feel of the comb changes accordingly.
Thickness is the shock-absorbing line of the comb.
Only looking at the appearance without adjusting the hardness, combing hair gets stuck
Pitfall one: Only look at the appearance. It looks similar, but the feeling when combing the scalp is a completely different matter—the thickness of the soft rubber layer directly determines the massaging sensation.
Pitfall 2: Missed temperature resistance test. Deformation — temperature resistance test, must be checked.
Pitfall 3: Softness falsely advertised. Hard — softness should be accepted based on actual testing.
Tip hardness, thickness, resilience—ask before combing
Three questions: How thick are the teeth, what is the temperature resistance, and according to what test is the shock absorption measured? One verification: actual measurement in practical use — three questions and one verification, the supplier’s background is clear.
Thickness verification must come first: determine the soft rubber layer according to the comb tooth contact area, and measure with calipers. Set the thickness first, then discuss the price—the thickness is the comb's shock-absorbing line.
Making sample retention a habit: retain samples from each batch, and retest softness and shock absorption by batch. When changing materials for a batch, compare first before scaling up—the more stable the batch, the fewer the customer complaints.
Hair Clipping, Broken Teeth, Static Electricity: A Fault Comparison Table
| Phenomenon | Reason | Countermeasure |
|---|
| become hard | Hardness is relatively high | Reduce hardness |
| Vibration | Insufficient shock absorption | Increase thickness |
| Transformation | Insufficient temperature resistance | Change to heat-resistant material |
| frizzy hair | Poor anti-static | Add anti-static agent |
| Batch Drift | Formula fluctuation | Lock window |
A good comb's teeth tips should be like a cat's tongue—smooth and springy, gliding over the scalp without pricking. Combs with TPE-coated teeth or fully soft TPE combs, with a Shore A hardness of 60-70, have moderate tackiness; too hard will prick the scalp, too soft won't detangle knots.
Tooth thickness difference of 0.3mm, one level lower in shock absorption — soft teeth rely on both thickness and rebound for cushioning. Bends won't catch the scalp, durability is measured by repeated combing; anti-static formula reduces frizz.
Combing hair and pulling it out is not because the teeth are too close together, but because the rebound and smoothness of the teeth ends are not matched. Most static frizz is caused by the material attracting fibers and generating electricity, so choose anti-static masterbatch; the side that touches the skin should be matte and not attract dust.
Answer three questions before prototyping: what hair type are you combing, how long do you comb each day, and are you using it on dry or wet hair. The answers determine the hardness level and water-resistant formula; after blind testing and scoring, the production tooth thickness is determined.
The new comb is very smooth. After being left for a month, white residue appears between the teeth — this is caused by excess oil separation, and the customer returns it immediately.
The whitening caused by oil exudation is not due to dirty material, but because the oil comes out; choose compatible formulations with low oil content, and the surface will not whiten after 7 days of observation.
Combs are used every day and washed frequently. TPE coating needs to be wash-resistant and non-sticky, and the teeth should be firm and springy without scratching the scalp.
When it gets wet or comes into contact with shampoo, ordinary materials become sticky on the surface over time; choosing a formula resistant to washing allows hundreds of washes without becoming sticky or soft and flat, and the comb teeth are smooth and do not scratch the scalp.
The comb is also over-molded, and the soft coating must have enough peel strength against the hard base. If the soft rubber handle detaches from the PP tooth handle, it will result in customer complaints; for SEBS-based coating on PP, the typical peel strength is 1.0-2.0 kN/m. If it doesn't peel when bent, it can be approved.
Comb final inspection: Peel strength, wash resistance, and smoothness of teeth are checked randomly for each batch.
Each batch is sampled to test peel strength and after washing hundreds of times, the surface is not sticky and does not scratch; when changing materials for a batch, first do a small test combing, and only if there is no delamination, proceed with full production.
When it comes to choosing a comb, it ultimately comes down to asking about three things at once: detachment force, wash resistance, and the smoothness of the teeth. PP teeth and handle wrapped with SEBS soft rubber, detachment force 1.0-2.0 kN/m, won't become sticky after washing with shampoo hundreds of times; start with a small batch for trial combing, and only increase quantity if it doesn't scratch the scalp.
Cologne Customer Case: Unstable Shrinkage Rate and Size Fluctuations, Small Batch Trial Production Continues with Three Orders
Jinhua household daily-use factory, comb shrinkage rate is unstable, size fluctuates greatly. Cologne coordinates with small-batch trial production for validation before scaling up, stable size, customer renews orders for three consecutive batches. Small-batch trial production locks in size before ramping up—shrinkage issue should be exposed during trial production.
Summary
Comb material selection: thickness determined first, shock absorption then measured; thickness plus 0.3mm shock absorption differs by one stop, thickness is the shock absorption line
