(INEOS Styrolution)

How much is ASA per kilogram? Domestic vs imported — the price gap of weather-resistant plastics lies in UV resistance
How much is ASA per kilogram?
A quick search shows quotes ranging from CNY 12/kg to CNY 23/kg — a spread wider than the weatherability grade itself. Some buyers say the CNY 15 Kingfa ASA works fine; others insist only the CNY 23 Kumho XC-230 counts as automotive grade. Where does the difference really lie?
Honestly, anyone asking "how much is ASA per kilo" probably has not yet understood that ASA is not a single material — general-purpose, weather-resistant, heat-resistant, high-flow and glass-fiber-reinforced grades each carry a different price. Comparing a general-purpose quote with an automotive grade is not price comparison; it is how you get fooled.
1. Mainstream grade quotes (imported + domestic)
Here are the high-volume grades and reference prices on the market. Figures below are recent market references; live prices are subject to same-day inquiry.
BASF (Germany)
Luran S 777K, weather- and heat-resistant, approx. CNY 17-18/kg. Automotive mirror housings, radiator grilles.
Luran S 778T, heat-stable with UV resistance, approx. CNY 18-19/kg. Automotive exteriors, outdoor products.
Luran S KR2858G3, glass-fiber reinforced grade, approx. CNY 20-25/kg. Engineering applications, structural parts.
INEOS Styrolution
Luran S 757R, injection-molding weather-resistant grade, approx. CNY 17-19/kg. Outdoor products, automotive exteriors.
Kumho (South Korea)
XC-230, high-weatherability anti-aging automotive exterior grade, approx. CNY 22-23/kg. Injection grade, automotive dedicated.
XC801, high-flow weather-resistant grade, approx. CNY 12-15/kg. General injection molding, outdoor products.
Chi Mei (Taiwan, China)
PW-978B, general-purpose grade, approx. CNY 19/kg. Outdoor products, automotive.
PW-978D, general-purpose grade, approx. CNY 18/kg. Cost-effective; general injection molding.
Kingfa (Chinese major)
Kingfa ASA general-purpose grade, approx. CNY 15-18/kg. Domestic workhorse; cost-effective; automotive exteriors, outdoor products.
Kingfa ASA weather-resistant grade, approx. CNY 18-22/kg. Automotive grade, premium outdoor.
In short: general-purpose CNY 12-18, weather-resistant CNY 17-20, automotive grade CNY 20-23, glass-fiber reinforced CNY 20-25. The weatherability and application you need decide which tier you belong in.
2. Why do ASA prices differ so much
The ASA price gap mainly hides in four factors.
First, acrylate content. The higher the acrylate content, the better the weatherability and the higher the price. High-weatherability grades cost 20-30% more than general-purpose.
Second, heat resistance grade. General-purpose grades with HDT around 80°C are cheap; heat-resistant grades above 90°C cost more. Heat resistance is a key ASA indicator.
Third, flow. High-flow grades suit thin-wall molding and process faster, so they cost more; general flow sits in the middle.
Fourth, brand and origin. Imports carry a premium but offer stable weatherability; domestic grades offer value but uneven quality. For the same weather-resistant grade, Kumho costs 20-30% more than Kingfa — you pay for quality control and automotive certifications.
3. Procurement pitfalls: don't let weatherability fool you
I have seen too many buyers end up choosing the cheapest CNY 12 material after endless price comparison, only to have outdoor parts yellow within half a year, trigger customer returns — one loss enough to buy half a year of good material.
Procurement of ASA is deeper water than you think. Three traps must be avoided:
First, test heat deflection temperature and melt flow index instead of trusting the grade name. Performance of the same grade can fluctuate between batches. Test HDT and melt flow against the COA before use. Don't listen to salespeople saying "close enough" — close enough is far apart.
Second, watch out for substitution fraud. Some traders sell ABS as ASA, or general-purpose as weather-resistant. Demand the COA, a weatherability test report and original packaging. Only accept material with all three.
Third, don't compare unit price alone — calculate total cost. Material A at CNY 12/kg yellows and gets returned within six months outdoors; material B at CNY 20/kg stays white for three years outdoors. Count the full life cycle per finished part, and B is actually cheaper.
4. Standard grades not enough? Consider modified compounds
If standard grades always fall short — you need flame retardancy AND high weatherability, reinforcement AND UV resistance, or low cost AND automotive grade — the problem is not ASA itself; you don't need standard ASA, you need modified ASA.
Ningbo Kolong New Materials is developing high-performance modified ASA solutions, with grades covering glass-fiber reinforcement, flame retardancy, weather resistance and UV resistance. For special needs, message us for a modified ASA quote reference — it saves not only money but also trial-and-error time compared with buying base resin and tuning additives yourself.
In plain terms: standard grades are a big pot of shared rice; modified compounds are a dish cooked to order. The higher your requirements, the more you need customization.
5. Popular grades — same-day quotes via message
All prices above are references. ASA prices change daily — styrene, acrylonitrile, acrylate and exchange rates all move.
If you need same-day quotes for specific grades from BASF, INEOS Styrolution, Kumho, Chi Mei or Kingfa, message us and we will send a live price sheet. No beating around the bush — real numbers.
Final words
For ASA, the difference between CNY 12 and CNY 23 is not CNY 11.
Unit price is the threshold; choosing the right weatherability grade and application is the baseline. Don't let the quote sheet fool you — you are not buying one kilogram of plastic, you are buying a solution that survives three years outdoors. Count the full life cycle per finished part, add in the loss from returns, and you will know who is truly cheap and who is truly expensive.
