1. 做管材、型材——认悬浮法通用牌号,副牌够用;
2. 做线缆绝缘、护套——分硬质、软质选对应牌号;
3. 做户外建材——耐候稳定剂体系先问清;
4. 做透明、医用——上正牌,别拿副牌凑;
5. K值、塑化度、色相进厂必测;
6. 大包装量产,小包装打样;

"Why is this batch of PVC so dark in color? Is it waste material?"
Old Li, a purchasing officer at a pipe material factory in Tianjin, held a bag of substandard material and asked the technical supervisor. The supervisor pinched the granules and rubbed them: 'This isn’t waste material; it’s the secondary brand from a major factory. It’s from the same batch of resin, just with slight differences in stabilizer formulation and plasticization degree—completely different from recycled material.' Half convinced, Old Li tried it on the machine. The pipe surface came out smooth, and the drop hammer impact test passed, saving several hundred yuan per ton.
This conversation is replayed in the PVC circle almost every week. Today, let's sort this matter out clearly.
The hard currency in building materials and cables, who is supplying it?
PVC, whose chemical name is polyvinyl chloride, is used in pipes, profiles, cable insulation, and door and window profiles, with an astonishingly large consumption. It is cheap, flame-retardant, and corrosion-resistant, and can be made hard or soft with the addition of stabilizers. It is a versatile hard currency in building materials and cables.
Global PVC resin production capacity is around 60 million tons, with concentration at the top. Looking at overseas manufacturers, Japan's Shin-Etsu Chemical (in the US via its subsidiary Shintech) is at the top, with an annual capacity of around 4 million tons; Taiwan's Formosa Plastics follows closely; Westlake Chemical in the US (including Germany's Vinnolit) is also in the top tier. LG Chemical, LyondellBasell, and Occidental are in the second tier.
PVC subsidiary brand, special in stabilizer system
PVC sub-brand, definition remains the same: the same manufacturer, the same grade, some inspection indicators at the factory did not fully meet the standards of the main brand. The sources are still those four—leftover material from the start and end of production, transitional material during grade switching, batches with slight exceedances in K value or plasticity due to process fluctuations, and leftover material from secondary lines.
But PVC has a special characteristic: it is a material that is 'served' by the stabilizer system. For PVC resin from the same batch, the amount of stabilizer added and the degree of plasticization directly determine the final product's weather resistance, aging resistance, and surface gloss. Therefore, common deviations in PVC sub-brands are not due to changes in the base material molecules, but rather small fluctuations in the K value (degree of polymerization), plasticization degree, or color tone.
The boundary with recycled material must be clearly defined: secondary grade is raw resin that simply fails inspection; recycled material is crushed old pipes and old profiles re-granulated, which have already undergone a heat history, so using them for outdoor building materials reduces their lifespan. When buying PVC secondary grade, the real fear is mistaking recycled material for secondary grade.
Shin-Etsu Chemical: A Global Leader in PVC
Japan's Shin-Etsu Chemical relies on its US subsidiary Shintech to establish large bases in Louisiana and Texas, accounting for about 12% to 14% of the global market according to some sources, ranking among the top. Suspension PVC resin, commonly TK series grades.
Its sub-brand mostly consists of batches with slight fluctuations in K value or hue. For pipes, profiles, and general wire insulation layers that do not require extreme precision, the base material of this sub-brand is stable and has good batch consistency. For high transparency or medical-grade applications, it is still better to use the main brand.
Formosa Plastics: An Integrated Major Manufacturer in Asia
Taiwan Formosa Plastics, from ethylene to caustic soda integration, has large PVC resin plants in both Taiwan and the United States, accounting for about 12% of the global capacity. It has a complete range of suspension PVC resin grades.
Its subsidiary brand has a solid cost structure and is suitable for high-volume building pipes and profiles. The advantage of an integrated large factory is the chlor-alkali-ethylene-PVC closed loop, ensuring a clean source of raw materials. The subsidiary brand offers a good cost-performance ratio for non-visible building materials.
Westlake Chemical: Layout in North America and Europe
Westlake Chemical in the United States acquired Germany's Vinnolit, which has both suspension and paste resins. By capacity, it accounts for about six to nine percent of the global market, ranking at the tail end of the leading group.
Its sub-brand is familiar with the system in profiles and soft products. For making insulation sheaths and ordinary soft parts, as long as the plasticization matches the process, processing is very smooth for the sub-brand.
When buying PVC sub-brands, first understand these three things
First, distinguish between hard products (pipes and profiles) and soft products (cable sheaths); the grade requirements for the two are completely different.
Second, the K value (degree of polymerization) must be tested upon entering the factory, as it directly determines your plasticizing temperature and product strength.
Third, for outdoor building material components, the weather resistance and stabilizer system should be clearly explained by the supplier; don’t just look at the color of the granules.
Fourth, large packaging is suitable for mass production in pipe factories, while small packaging is suitable for small batches of cables.
In one sentence: PVC secondary-grade is not waste material — it is the same batch of resin, just with slightly different stabilizer formulas and plasticization levels.

Selection mnemonic + a case from Tianjin
Here is the mnemonic for you:
1. For making pipes and profiles — use general grades for the suspension method, secondary grades are sufficient;
2. For cable insulation and sheathing — choose the corresponding grade based on whether it is hard or soft;
3. For outdoor building materials—ask about the weathering stabilizer system first;
4. Use transparent, medical-grade ones—go for the genuine brand, don’t settle for a sub-brand;
5. K value, plasticity, and hue must be tested upon entering the factory;
6. Mass production in large packaging, sample production in small packaging;
7. Retain samples from the same batch; batches can be traced.
There is a customer in Tianjin who makes building material pipes and cable insulation layers. Previously, they used recycled material as a secondary brand, but the outdoor pipes would chalk and peel after one summer in the sun, leading the customer to return whole batches and suffer losses of over a hundred thousand yuan. Later, they switched to Shin-Etsu series PVC secondary brand, locking batch by batch according to K value and plasticization degree. The apparent pass rate of the pipes after outdoor sun exposure rose from just over 70% to more than 98%, and the material cost per ton was reduced by several hundred yuan.
This is the difference between off-brand and recycled materials—not that the PVC material itself is bad, it's that you're treating recycled material as if it were off-brand. Ningbo Kolon New Materials Co., Ltd. has been producing imported PVC off-brands for many years and handles dozens of cases each year for building materials and cables. To put it simply, they help you determine things like 'whether the K value is correct, whether plasticization is sufficient, whether it can withstand weathering' before extrusion.
The core of this piece is just one sentence: the PVC secondary brand is not a downgrade of the resin, but rather that the polymerization degree K value and stabilizer compatibility are only about seventy to eighty percent in place.
Interaction: Have you ever been scammed by PVC?
Those who make pipes, profiles, or cables—who hasn't dealt with PVC?
Does it powder after being exposed to the summer sun, or does poor plasticization cause the surface to darken? Or is the recycled material treated as a secondary product and returned by customers?
