Reconstruct a conversation. The purchaser asked: "Can this batch of PEI off-brand, ULTEM, be used on wafer carriers?" The engineer countered: "Let me ask you two numbers first—what is the Vicat softening point? What is the injection molding temperature?" The purchaser was stunned: "Aren’t they all PEI?" The engineer replied in one sentence, sending him back: "For the PEI category, 70-80% of the material worldwide comes from SABIC alone. The ‘other PEI’ you’re buying may very well just be SABIC’s ULTEM resin pelletized again."
This conversation repeats dozens of times every year in the semiconductor materials procurement group. PEI is different from PEEK—it is not one of the three major players; it is almost a monopoly.
PEI: Transparent, high-temperature resistant, flame-retardant without adding flame retardants
PEI, polyetherimide, is transparent, high-temperature resistant, flame retardant without needing added flame retardants, and has dimensional stability like it’s been precisely measured. Its glass transition is around 210 degrees, and for long-term service it can go up to 170 degrees and above. It’s transparent and can even allow microwaves to pass through. It’s in high demand for semiconductor carriers, medical sterilization parts, aircraft interiors, and 5G high-frequency connectors. Behind its commercial chemical name stands a legend: PEI was first commercialized by GE Plastics, and later GE Plastics was acquired by Saudi Basic Industries (SABIC), bringing the ULTEM brand under SABIC’s ownership.
In the global landscape, by production capacity share, SABIC alone accounts for 70-80% of global PEI supply, with over one hundred ULTEM grades, making it the absolute leader. Other players rarely produce PEI raw resin from monomer polymerization themselves; most of them take ULTEM resin for modification, granulation, or making sheets and rods—for example, Mitsubishi Chemical Advanced Materials produces Duratron PEI, and RTP manufactures modified PEI, which in essence still uses SABIC's resin. So in the PEI industry, to be honest: the first-tier is dominated solely by SABIC ULTEM, while the second-tier is comprised of a group of companies that take its resin for downstream modifications. Oligopoly categories are written according to the actual tiers, not forced into a top-three ranking.
PEI sub-brand, not 'other people's PEI'
How do PEI sub-grades come about? For SABIC, the virgin pellets from the same grade and the same polymerization line have consistent molecular chains; it's just that during factory inspections, some indicators—MFI, transparency, and heat distortion temperature—slightly deviate from the main grade's internal control limits, resulting in a sub-grade. There are four main sources: start-and-stop tailings, transitional material between grade changes, batches with indicator fluctuations caused by process variations, and tailings from parallel lines.
There's a particular point that needs to be explained clearly: a PEI secondary brand is not a 'PEI from another company.' Many so-called 'imported PEI secondary brands' on the market are actually made from ULTEM material, or are secondary brands modified from ULTEM resin. Regarding the difference from recycled material: PEI has a very high processing temperature, and recycled material has already been overheated before, causing a drop in transparency and toughness; regenerated material is even more variable. Secondary brands use original factory virgin pellets. Packaging is available in both large and small sizes.
SABIC ULTEM: From GE Plastics to Saudi Arabia, it is synonymous with PEI
The first one, and also the unavoidable one, is SABIC's ULTEM. From GE Plastics to SABIC, ULTEM has become synonymous with 'PEI' in the PEI category, with grades covering everything from pure resin 1000 series to glass fiber reinforced, carbon fiber reinforced, and flame-retardant modified versions.
Its secondary brand features a complete range of grades and strong certifications, with corresponding grades for semiconductors, medical, and aviation applications. A reminder: SABIC has facilities in Saudi Arabia, the United States, Spain, and Singapore. The secondary brand products from different origins circulate mixed together, so when purchasing, make sure to ask clearly about the origin and batch number, and don't mistake modified re-granulated products for original secondary brand products.
Mitsubishi Chemical Advanced Materials Duratron: Using ULTEM for sheets and rods
The second one is Mitsubishi Chemical Advanced Materials. It does not produce PEI resin from monomers itself, but uses SABIC's ULTEM resin to make standard sheets and rods, which are then machined into semiconductor carriers and medical clamps. The Duratron PEI brand has a very solid reputation in the semiconductor carrier community.
Its 'secondary brand' form is closer to the sub-grade sheet in standard components — slightly tighter dimensional tolerances, some surface defects, but the material itself is still ULTEM. Semiconductor carrier and test fixture manufacturers recognize this line.
RTP Company: A major manufacturer of modified granules, not an original resin manufacturer
The third company, RTP in the United States. RTP is a major manufacturer of modified granules. For PEI, they also use ULTEM resin for enhancement, lubrication, and conductive modification, with grades covering the semiconductor and electronics fields. Its sub-brands are more reflected in transitional batches of modified materials — for example, slight deviations in glass fiber content for certain grades, or color batch variations.
For those making semiconductor carriers and connectors, RTP's modified PEI sub-brand offers good cost performance, but remember: it is a modifier, not an original resin manufacturer, and it's not on the same level as SABIC.
Three pitfalls of PEI secondary brands: don't confuse modified material with virgin resin
First, do not treat "modified PEI" as "virgin resin PEI." Semiconductor high-purity components have requirements for metal ions and leachables, and the additives in modified materials can affect cleanliness. Second, the heat deflection temperature: PEI has a wide heat resistance window, but some off-brand grades have a slightly lower heat deflection temperature, which can cause deformation when making high-temperature baking fixtures.
Third is transparency. For PEI secondary brands used for transparent observation windows, haze is a bit worse, and light transmission is not up to standard. In addition, PEI injection molding requires high temperatures and careful control of barrel residence time. Secondary brands should also follow the process cards, and don't skip drying and temperature control just because the material is cheap. Large packaging is suitable for mass production carriers, while small packaging is suitable for prototyping.

PEI Secondary Brand Material Selection Mnemonic
First, check the source: PEI recognizes ULTEM, distinguish between the modifier factory and the original resin factory; second, check the heat deflection temperature, high-temperature fixtures check the TD value; third, check the cleanliness grade, semiconductor parts check for precipitates; fourth, for transparent parts measure haze, and for sight windows first check light transmission; fifth, follow the process card for drying and temperature control, do not slack off when processing at over 300 degrees.
Zhuzhou has a client specializing in semiconductor wafer carriers. Previously, non-SABIC genuine ULTEM was not used, and the cost of a typical carrier couldn't be reduced. Later, the secondary carrier parts that directly contact the wafer were replaced with secondary brands of the same grade. The thermal distortion temperature and dimensional stability were within the same range as genuine ones, and cleanliness was tested according to semiconductor requirements. The carrier cost was lower, but key components directly contacting wafers were still genuine.
This is the balance of PEI when choosing secondary brands—in SABIC's dominant category, controlling indicator fluctuations within suitable range saves money. The softening point of the same PEI secondary brand, Vicah, usually has a softening point within five degrees and a density tolerance of ±0.02. It and ULTEM genuine are virgin granules produced by the same anhydride-diamine polymerization formula. Ningbo Kelong New Materials Co., Ltd. has been doing imported PEI sub-brands for many years. The channels for ULTEM raw resin and downstream modified materials are stable, and they have handled many cases related to semiconductor carrier material selection.
Those making semiconductor carriers, medical sterilizers, or high-frequency connectors—who hasn't struggled with PEI materials? Is it that genuine brands are so expensive that a carrier is painful? Or is it that the secondary brand is bought and suffers from heat deformation? Or are modified materials accepted as base resins?
