每年高温灭菌季,做医用透析器、灭菌盘的厂就要开始提心吊胆。
去年有个客户,一批透析器外壳用了来路不明的“TPX料”,环氧乙烷灭菌一过,壳体直接瘪下去一圈,透明罩子雾得像磨砂玻璃。整批货退回来,十几万一吨的料赔进去不说,客户验厂记录还留了个黑点。
说白了,PMP这东西,贵是真贵,偏是真偏,但一旦用错位置,翻车翻得比谁都干脆。今天就把这门小众生意讲透。
一、PMP是什么,全球盘子小到什么程度
PMP的学名很长——聚4-甲基戊烯-1,商品名几乎只有一个:TPX。
它是目前工业化聚烯烃里密度最低的那一档,0.83g/cm³上下,比水还轻;熔点却能扛到220℃以上,透明、耐化学、还能透过微波。轻得像羽毛,耐热却能进灭菌锅,这俩属性凑一块,就是它独有的位置。
全球格局说出来你可能不信:PMP这个品类,几乎是三井化学一家撑起来的。三井化学自己的产品页写得很直白——TPX是全世界独一份的制造、销售体系。多家市场研究机构交叉看下来,三井化学在全球PMP树脂产能里占了七成以上,商业牌号超过15个,RT、DX、MX系列分得清清楚楚,年产能在两万吨量级。
真正能做PMP原树脂的国外玩家屈指可数:三井化学是绝对主力;住友化学在其高分子事业部也有少量PMP树脂供应;再往下,Ensinger、RTP Company、Westlake Plastics这些名字,其实是拿三井的TPX原树脂去做改性和板材加工的,并不生产原树脂。
所以这个品类不存在“全球前三随便挑”——它是个寡头到接近独一份的盘子。买PMP副牌,本质上就是在买三井TPX体系里那批指标小幅浮动的原厂料。
二、PMP副牌到底是个什么来头
▍TPX副牌密度卡在0.83g/cm³、熔点在220℃上下浮动几度,它和正牌出自同一套配位聚合装置——只是透光率或耐热那一栏化验时差了零点几个百分点。
先把定义说死:副牌,是同一厂家、同一牌号的产品里,出厂检验没完全达到正牌技术指标的那一部分。同一批聚合产物,检验全过贴正牌标签,个别指标差一点点,就是副牌。
PMP副牌的四大来源,和其他聚烯烃一个逻辑:装置开停车时的头尾料、牌号切换时的过渡料、工艺波动导致熔指或色相小幅超标的批次、副线尾料。
关键在于——它仍然是原厂原生聚合粒子,分子结构和正牌一模一样,只是个别指标小幅浮动。不是废旧料再造粒,不是水口料回炉。

PMP这料本身就贵,拿再生料冒充副牌去做医疗件,是要出事的事。
三、三井化学:TPX这个商标就是它注册的
头一家,也是绕不开的一家——三井化学。
TPX这个商标就是三井注册的,RT18、MX002、MX004这些牌号,做光学离型膜、医疗耗材、食品化妆品包装的人都熟。三井从单体4-甲基戊烯-1到聚合垂直打通,别人想仿都难。
它的副牌主要出在两个指标上:一是透光率或雾度,二是色相、黄度指数。说白了,就是透明件做不了高光外罩,但做透析器壳体、灭菌盘、实验器皿、食品托盘,完全够用。
三井TPX的副牌流通上,大包装小包装都有,原厂原包出来,批号可追。做医疗内件、一般耐热透明件的厂,拿精选副牌替代正牌,成本能下来一截,性能又不跑偏。
四、住友化学:不声不响的第二梯队
第二家要单独拎出来讲——住友化学。
很多人不知道住友也做PMP。它的高分子事业部面向电子和医疗包装供应高纯PMP树脂,量不大,但走的是高纯度路线,给对金属离子、析出物敏感的电子和医疗场景供货。
这个梯队要诚实说清楚:除了三井,全球能稳定供PMP原树脂的国外厂商非常少。住友算一个,剩下的更多是区域级的改性和板材加工厂。所以买PMP副牌,别听人忽悠“我们家也有进口PMP原厂料”——先问一句:你是哪家原树脂厂出的?答不上来的,多半是改性料或者进口副牌二次分装。
五、改性加工梯队:塔顶之外的活儿
第三层,是改性与板材加工梯队。
Ensinger、RTP Company、Westlake Plastics这几家,本身不做PMP聚合,但它们从三井拿TPX原树脂,做玻纤增强、矿物填充、色母改性,做成板材、棒材、精密加工件。Honeywell在美国市场也做TPX的分销。
这一层的“副牌”概念要换个理解:不是原树脂副牌,而是改性过程中指标小幅波动的批。对于做实验器皿、微波餐具、耐热托盘的下游,这一层的料性价比很高,但要认准是哪家改的、用的哪家原树脂。
说白了,PMP的产业链就是这样:三井在塔顶,住友在塔腰,改性厂在塔底做应用。买副牌,先想清楚你买的是哪一层。
六、买PMP副牌,四个坑先标出来
讲完格局,说几个真会踩的坑。
第一,别把“TPX副牌”和“透明PP”混为一谈。PP透明料虽然也透,但扛不住220℃的灭菌温度,一进环氧乙烷灭菌锅就软。
第二,看析出物和离子含量。做医疗、电子的,副牌也要看析出物指标,不是便宜就上。
第三,批次留样。PMP批次间哪怕熔指差一点点,做薄壁透析器壳体的壁厚就可能飘。进厂先留样、先试模,量产再上量。
第四,认批号。三井TPX的原厂副牌批号可追溯,分装换包的要打个问号。
记住一句话:PMP副牌省的是钱,赌不起的是灭菌锅那一轮。

说个真事。丽水有家做医用透析器和灭菌盘的客户,之前图便宜拿了批来路不清的“TPX料”,灭菌后壳体变形率跑到8%,整批退货损失二十多万。后来换成三井TPX体系的原厂副牌,析出物和壁厚指标对上后,灭菌后变形率压到0.3%以内,良率从七成拉到九成五。
Every year during the high-temperature sterilization season, factories that make medical dialyzers and sterilization trays have to start being on edge.
Last year, there was a client whose batch of dialyzer housings was made with some unknown 'TPX material.' Once they underwent ethylene oxide sterilization, the housings dented all around, and the transparent covers became frosted like sandblasted glass. The entire batch was returned, not to mention losing material worth hundreds of thousands per ton, and the client's factory inspection record also left a black mark.
Frankly speaking, PMP is really expensive and definitely niche, but once used in the wrong place, it can backfire more abruptly than anything else. Today, let's thoroughly explain this niche business.
1. What is PMP, and to what extent is its global market small?
The scientific name of PMP is very long—poly(4-methylpentene-1), and it basically has only one trade name: TPX.
It currently has the lowest density in industrialized polyolefins, around 0.83 g/cm³, lighter than water; yet its melting point can reach above 220°C, it is transparent, chemically resistant, and microwave-permeable. As light as a feather, yet heat-resistant enough to go into a sterilizer, these two properties together give it its unique position.
You might not believe it when the global situation is explained: for the PMP category, it is almost entirely supported by Mitsui Chemicals alone. Mitsui Chemicals' own product page states it very plainly—TPX has a unique global manufacturing and sales system. Cross-referencing multiple market research institutions shows that Mitsui Chemicals accounts for over 70% of global PMP resin capacity, with more than 15 commercial grades, clearly divided into the RT, DX, and MX series, with an annual capacity on the order of 20,000 tons.
There are very few foreign players who can truly produce original PMP resin: Mitsui Chemicals is the absolute main force; Sumitomo Chemical also supplies a small amount of PMP resin in its polymer division; further down the list, companies like Ensinger, RTP Company, and Westlake Plastics actually take Mitsui's TPX original resin for modification and sheet processing, and do not produce the original resin themselves.
So this category does not have 'just pick any top three globally'—it's a market dominated by a few giants, almost to the point of being a monopoly. Buying a PMP sub-brand is essentially buying the original materials from the Mitsui TPX system, where the specifications fluctuate slightly.
2. What exactly is the story behind the PMP sub-brand?
▍The TPX sub-brand has a density of 0.83 g/cm³ and a melting point that fluctuates a few degrees around 220℃. It comes from the same set of coordination polymerization equipment as the main brand—it's just that when tested, the transmittance or heat resistance differs by a few tenths of a percent.
Let's first clearly define it: a sub-brand product is that portion of products from the same manufacturer and the same brand that did not fully meet the official brand's technical specifications during factory inspection. In the same batch of polymer products, if all pass inspection and are labeled as the official brand, but some individual indicators are slightly off, that is considered a sub-brand.
The four main sources of PMP by-products follow the same logic as other polyolefins: the head and tail materials during plant start-up and shutdown, the transition materials during grade changes, batches with slight exceedances in melt index or color caused by process fluctuations, and the tail materials from secondary lines.
The key is — it is still original factory native aggregated particles, with a molecular structure exactly the same as the genuine product, only some individual indicators fluctuate slightly. It is not recycled waste material or sprue material reprocessed.
Here we need to clearly define the boundaries:

PMP material itself is expensive, using recycled material to pass off as a secondary brand for making medical parts is asking for trouble.
3. Mitsui Chemicals: The trademark TPX is registered by them
The first company, and an unavoidable one—Mitsui Chemicals.
The TPX trademark is registered by Mitsui. The grades RT18, MX002, and MX004 are familiar to people who work with optical release films, medical consumables, and food and cosmetic packaging. Mitsui has a vertical integration from the monomer 4-methylpentene-1 to polymerization, making it difficult for others to imitate.
Its sub-brands mainly focus on two indicators: one is light transmittance or haze, and the other is hue and yellowness index. Simply put, it can't be used for high-gloss covers for transparent parts, but it's completely sufficient for making dialysis device housings, sterilization trays, laboratory vessels, and food trays.
For the circulation of Mitsui TPX's sub-brand, there are both large and small packages. They come from the original factory in original packaging, and batch numbers can be traced. Manufacturers of medical inner parts and general heat-resistant transparent parts use selected sub-brand products to replace the main brand, which can reduce costs significantly without compromising performance.
4. Sumitomo Chemical: The Quiet Second Tier
The second one needs to be discussed separately — Sumitomo Chemical.
Many people do not know that Sumitomo also produces PMP. Its polymer division supplies high-purity PMP resin for electronic and medical packaging. The quantity is not large, but it follows a high-purity approach, providing products for electronic and medical applications that are sensitive to metal ions and precipitates.
This tier needs to be honest and clear: apart from Mitsui, there are very few foreign manufacturers in the world that can reliably supply PMP virgin resin. Sumitomo counts as one, and the rest are mostly regional-level modified and sheet processing factories. So when buying PMP secondary brands, don’t be fooled by claims like 'we also have imported PMP virgin material'—first ask: which original resin manufacturer produced it? If they can’t answer, it’s most likely modified material or repackaged imported secondary brand.
5. Modified Processing Team: Work Beyond the Top of the Tower
The third level is the echelon of modification and sheet processing.
Companies like Ensinger, RTP Company, and Westlake Plastics do not produce PMP polymers themselves, but they obtain TPX resin from Mitsui and use it for glass fiber reinforcement, mineral filling, and color masterbatch modification, producing sheets, rods, and precision machined parts. Honeywell also distributes TPX in the U.S. market.
The concept of 'secondary resin' at this level should be understood differently: it is not the original resin secondary product, but batches with slight fluctuations in indicators during the modification process. For downstream applications such as laboratory glassware, microwave tableware, and heat-resistant trays, this level of material offers a high cost-performance ratio, but it is important to know which company did the modification and which company's original resin was used.
To put it bluntly, the PMP industry chain is like this: Mitsui is at the top of the tower, Sumitomo is in the middle, and the modifiers are at the bottom doing applications. When buying a secondary brand, first think clearly about which layer you are buying.
6. Buying a PMP sub-brand, first mark out the four pitfalls
After talking about the big picture, let's go over a few pitfalls that people really fall into.
First, don’t confuse 'TPX sub-brand' with 'transparent PP'. Although PP transparent material is also clear, it cannot withstand sterilization temperatures of 220°C and will soften as soon as it enters the ethylene oxide sterilization chamber.
Second, look at the precipitates and ion content. When making medical or electronic products, even secondary brands need to check precipitate indicators; don't just go for the cheapest option.
Third, batch sampling. Even if the melt index between PMP batches differs slightly, the wall thickness of thin-walled dialyzer housings can fluctuate. Samples should be taken and trial molds made before entering the factory, and then full-scale production can begin.
Fourth, check the batch number. The original Mitsubishi TPX sub-brand batch number is traceable, while repackaged or relabeled products should be questioned.
Remember one thing: What PMP saves is money, what you can't afford to gamble on is the sterilizer round.

A true story. A customer in Lishui making medical dialyzers and sterilization trays previously bought batches of "TPX material" from unclear sources to save costs. After sterilization, the housing deformation rate reached 8%, leading to a full batch return and losses of over 200,000. Later, switching to Mitsui TPX system original secondary brands, once extractables and wall thickness indicators matched, the post-sterilization deformation rate was reduced to below 0.3%, and the yield improved from 70% to 95%.
