GRS认证料,再生含量链路清楚,打品牌客户和出口单;
汽车级认证料,IATF加IMDS一整套,专攻主机厂供应链;
UL黄卡料,阻燃和电气安全数据进了黄卡,电子电器客户认;
1. 接品牌客户、要出口,先问GRS、ISCC齐不齐;
2. 进汽车厂,IATF 16949和IMDS一个都不能少;
3. 进电子电器,UL黄卡比口头承诺管用;
4. 想碰食品接触,先掂量FDA授权和料源闭环,别硬闯;
5. 认证不是终点,料源可追溯才是底气;
6. 证齐全但说不清料从哪来,照样过不了验厂;
7. 东南亚进口渠道,问清是中资基地还是转手贸易;
8. RCEP零关税的合规颗粒,比拼包料贵得有道理;
Many people think recycled PPS is just cheap high-temperature material, slightly inferior to virgin material.
But do you know how long it takes to review a GRS certification? How much does it cost to get an automotive-grade IATF 16949? The FDA authorization for food contact grade is something very few specialty recycled materials can get.
The truth is: in the recycled PPS industry, what really holds people in the back is not the price, but the certification.
Without a certificate, no matter how good your material is, big clients won't dare to list you as a qualified supplier; With a certificate, the price per ton of material can be much higher than without a license.
This article peels down the certification thresholds for recycled PPS one by one, showing how much money, time, and source each certificate actually is.
The recycled PPS certification system is layered, with each layer having a door.
The first layer is recycled content certification, GRS, ISCC, UL 2809, proving that your material really contains a lot of recycled material and traceable supply chain; The second layer is the quality system, IATF 16949, ISO 9001, proving your factory can ship steadily; The third layer is safety performance, UL94, RoHS, REACH, proving your materials are harmless; The fourth layer is food contact, FDA, EU 10/2011, proving you dare to touch food.
Each layer is built with real money. Whatever type of customer you want to serve, you have to first open the door.
The world behind the door is much more expensive than in front of the door—every certificate is a pass for high-value recycled materials.
GRS is the entry ticket, UL2809 is the entry
GRS, a global recycling standard, and if the recycled content is no less than 20%, you can apply, but getting approved is just the beginning.
It not only checks how much recycled material is in your materials, but also sets a host of social, environmental, and chemical requirements—human rights, wastewater discharge, hazardous substances, none of which are missing, with full traceability throughout the chain.
Brand clients recognize UL 2809 even more—it involves breaking down the BOM, calculating the proportions of PIR and PCR, tracing the supply chain layer by layer, isolating and tracing the factory, and finally UL conducts on-site inspection, forming a complete system.
Special recycled materials like rPEEK and rPSU on the market have already started bearing the GRS mark, so it's only a matter of time before recycled PPS catches up.
In Ningbo, there's a customer specializing in modified recycled PPS that used to collect and consolidate materials domestically. The GRS certificate was issued for over a year, and the certificate was in place. But when a European brand client came to audit, they checked the source ledger—which batch of recycled material came from, who used the previous material, and several sorting steps in between—and couldn't explain it clearly, so they simply withdrew the order. Later, they moved all their material sources to Southeast Asia—the Chinese pelletizing base in Vietnam—handling local and global recycled materials. From overseas recycling, sorting, to pelletizing, the entire line is completed, then shipped back to China via RCEP tariff-free sea freight. Every batch carries traceable GRS and ISCC PLUS links, clearly recording which recycled material came from, whose hands it went through, and which year it was blended. After the change, the European brand customer completed factory inspections in one go, and orders stabilized from 20 tons per month to 90 tons.
This is the value of Southeast Asian import channels—not just cheap material, but also traceable material sources. In the GRS system, these four words truly cost money. Ningbo Kelong New Materials Co., Ltd. imports year-round from compliant pelletizing base organizations in Southeast Asia. GRS and ISCC certificates and supply chains are ready-made. In other words, they prepare materials that others can't handle in a whole year in advance.
Automotive-grade certification is a battlefield
To enter the automotive supply chain, GRS alone is far from enough; that is the real battlefield.
IATF 16949 Quality System is the ticket; IMDS material data must be entered and traced — every raw material, every additive, and every batch of recycled material must be reported layer by layer according to molecular formula and mass ratio, and OEMs will even question the content of harmful substances in the materials.
What's even more aggressive is the automakers' own ramping: BMW requires the ISCC PLUS mass balance route with a PCR ratio of no less than 30%; Mercedes-Benz has set a goal of 100% recyclable new cars by 2030; The EU ELV directive is moving downward, requiring no less than 15% recycled materials for new cars by 2032 and no less than 25% by 2036.
From establishment to approval, this system takes at least a year or two to get it done. If any link fails, all previous investments will be wasted.
So you'll see that among the many people on the market who claim automotive-grade recycled PPS certification, only a handful have actually completed this set of certificates and can still supply continuously.
Food contact grade is the ceiling
Food contact grade is the ceiling for recycled PPS certification.
US FDA 21 CFR 177.2490 explicitly authorizes PPS resin as a coating and component for repeatedly contact food products—this is the confidence of PPS. The EU corresponds to EU 10/2011, drinking water scenarios include NSF 61, and domestically it is GB 4806.
But the problem is: food contact grade usually only accepts virgin PPS or strictly closed-loop PIR materials, meaning the sprue, gate, and non-compliant products on the same production line, with clean sources and clear histories.
Those dark-colored, multi-source PCR recycled materials generally don't use food contact—the sources are too mixed, you can't clearly say what's mixed in, so who would dare to go for food?
If you really insist on this path, from project initiation, material preparation, simulation transfer testing, to submitting the full set of process data, then reviewing a round of supplementary materials, completing a round of a year of foundation, spending anywhere from hundreds of thousands to over a million, and in the end, you might not even get it.
To put it bluntly, food-grade recycled PPS sounds sexy but is actually lean in the field.
Southeast Asian raw materials are another moat
Many people focus on certification itself, but actually forget — the root of certification lies in the source.
After China's 2017 ban on waste control, the procurement and production capacity of recycled pellets shifted to places like Vietnam, Thailand, and Malaysia. Under the RCEP framework, over 90% of plastic products are tariff-free, and you can enjoy benefits with a certificate of origin.
In Vietnam, the first phase of Inco Regeneration's Qinghua base was built in 2019, with the second phase starting in 2025, followed by a large number of Chinese-funded modification and recycling plants; In Malaysia, Kingfa Technology has set up a subsidiary, leveraging ASEAN tariffs to cover automobiles, home appliances, and electronics, and conveniently serves as a buffer transit for China-US trade.
Speaking of the Southeast Asian sources of special PPS recycled materials, there is still not much publicly available large-scale data, but channel layout is accelerating—a more realistic path is for Chinese-funded modified factories to set up factories in Southeast Asia, produce recycled modified pellets and then re-export them domestically, ensuring compliance, zero tariffs, and clear supply chains.
So you'll find that the truly established recycled PPS suppliers among major clients almost always have a Southeast Asian source channel behind them. This isn't just a bonus—it's a moat.
Four directions: Material selection by certification .
Up to here, there are four commonly used directions based on certification:
GRS-certified materials, clear recycled content chain, and branded customers and export orders;
Automotive-grade certified materials, IATF plus IMDS complete set, specializing in OEM supply chains;
UL yellow card materials, flame retardant and electrical safety data are included in yellow cards, recognized by electronics and electrical customers;
Food contact grade materials, only those with FDA approval and closed-loop material supply are involved in direct food contact work.
Ordering by certificate, much more reliable than ordering by price.
Selection tips, nine sentences explain
Finally, here's a set of practical selection tips:
1. When serving brand clients or exporting, first ask if GRS and ISCC are ready;
2. When entering a car factory, IATF 16949 and IMDS are essential;
3. For electronic appliances, a UL yellow card is more effective than a verbal promise;
4. If you want to get involved in food contact materials, first consider FDA authorization and a closed-loop material source, don't force your way in;
5. Certification is not the end, the real confidence comes from traceable material sources;
6. Even if all certificates are complete, if you cannot explain where the materials come from, you still won't pass the factory audit;
7. For Southeast Asian import channels, find out clearly whether it's a Chinese-funded base or a resale trade;
8. Compliant materials with zero tariffs under RCEP, the higher cost of packaged materials is justified;
9. For large volume supply, first see if you can continuously supply ten batches, then discuss the price per batch.
These nine points, choose materials based on certification, and you will be clear-headed.
Written at the end
In the recycled PPS field, on the surface it's about price, but underneath it's about certifications and material sources. Certification, if not reviewed annually, becomes invalid; material sources, if unstable, cause trouble in three months.
Ningbo Kolong New Materials Co., Ltd. focuses its main effort on Southeast Asian import channels, thoroughly checking GRS and ISCC certified material sources, keeping good records, aiming at one thing — having certificates ready when the client asks, and providing traceable chains when needed.
Simply put, in the end, recycled PPS relies on three words: trustworthiness.
Interaction: Have you ever been troubled by certifications?
Purchasers, quality controllers, foreign trade personnel, who hasn't been troubled by certifications?
Was it almost losing the GRS annual audit? Or a client auditing the factory and not finding material source records? Or filling IMDS data incorrectly and being sent back for re-examination?
