Three years ago, to save on material costs, I picked out crispy recycled materials; Three years later, I stacked the return slips and repaid the money and interest I had saved, even building the customer's trust. Owners who make turnover boxes and automotive interiors have calculated this kind of account a lot. Today, I'm going to talk about recycled POE, which is a special "medicine" to untie this deadlock. How and where to use this medicine will be explained all at once.
First, let's get to know the main character. POE, scientifically called polyolefin elastomer, is an elastomer formed by metallocene catalysis by copolymerizing ethylene with α-olefins like octene and butene. The surface is pure white, like a soft candy—easy to squeeze and stretch. It has a nickname called the "universal toughening agent"—it's not a hard structural material itself, but you can mix a little into PP or PE, making the brittle material less brittle, with several levels of drop and impact resistance. It is also resistant to low temperatures, weather, and is naturally compatible with polyolefins. Ningbo Kelon New Materials Co., Ltd. supplies plastic raw materials, integrating industry and trade, with common recycled plastic categories stocked year-round. POE is a relatively new and low-key one.
Recycled POE is a new category, so new that most people haven't heard of it yet. Its recycled source is very special: mainly not old shoe soles or old pipes, but scraps cut from photovoltaic film factories. The film used to seal photovoltaic modules and cells now widely uses POE (especially N-type cells), which are cut according to module size during production, leaving a pile of leftover edge strips. These materials are clean, weather-resistant, and fresh off the production line, and after recycling and pelletizing, their performance remains good. When Ningbo Kelon New Materials Co., Ltd. buys these materials, they focus on photovoltaic film scraps as their source, avoiding miscellaneous materials with unclear origins.
POE not for the main material, but as a "medicine"
Many people think POE can be used for injection molding, box or shell. But that's not the case. The correct way to open POE is as a "medicine"—the amount doesn't need to be large, just add 10% to 30% to the brittle PP or PE recycled material, and the impact resistance will quickly increase.
PP repeated processing of recycled materials, molecular chains break, and the biggest fear in making turnover boxes or strapping tapes is dropping—they crack at the slightest drop. Adding calcium powder and fillers only makes the process more brittle. At this point, adding a bit of fat-dissolving POE is like adding a layer of soft tendon to the brittle frame, making it hard to break with each drop or break. Industry data shows that adding between 10% and 30% POE in PP can increase impact strength several times over. But note, it's medicine, not food: too much reduces the material's tensile strength and costs go up. This is the reason why POE "saves a lot by adding a little"—its value isn't in how many pieces you make yourself, but in helping other materials produce fewer defective products.
So the first understanding of recycled POE is: don't compare it to the main material price per ton; use it as the cost of toughening to calculate it. You're not buying a bunch of POE pellets; you're buying the key to "turning brittle recycled material into qualified material." Once you understand this, it's clear why recycled POE is low-key yet valuable.
So why can POE become tougher? It's because of its "dual-phase" capability. In the POE molecular chain, the hard crystalline segment acts like a skeleton, while the amorphous soft segment is like rubber. When mixed into PP or PE, the soft segment disperses into tiny particles. When impacted, these soft particles absorb energy and block crack propagation, essentially equipping the brittle material with countless miniature shock absorbers. Moreover, POE and PP/PE are polyolefins and naturally have good compatibility, so they can be blended together without many compatibilizers, which is why they are more effective than other toughening agents. The key to choosing POE is the melt index (flowability), which matches the substrate; otherwise, mixing it will float on the surface and disperse unevenly, making toughening just superficial.
Besides making toughening agents, POE itself is also a versatile expert. Car bumpers, interiors, and low-temperature resistant containers all love to use it; For wires and cables with soft, flexible protective covers at low temperatures, use it; TPO waterproof membranes and shoe foam also have its presence. When transparent, its light transmittance exceeds 90% and has low haze, which is why photovoltaics choose it for encapsulation films. Recycled POE follows these applications: clean scraps are used for modification, soft parts, and foaming—all of which are natural. It's called "low-key" because it always hides behind the main material as a supporting role, but without it, a bunch of brittle materials and films are hard to produce.
That's also why recycled POE isn't so high-profile on the market: it's neither a general-purpose material that wins by quantity, nor a well-known old material. Its customers are factories doing modification, recycling boxes, and automotive interiors, knowing that adding a little can revive brittle recycled materials. Outsiders see it as ordinary, but insiders secretly use it to control costs and yield. For factories aiming to continue cutting costs in 2026, this kind of category that "others haven't yet reacted to" is often the real lucrative part.
Figure 1 Photovoltaic modules, films, and POE pellets
Behind photovoltaic scraps lies most of the recycled POE
Where does recycled POE come from? This question itself has a story. Unlike PP, it doesn't come from thousands of households' waste products; its assets are mainly in the workshops of photovoltaic factories.
Photovoltaic modules seal the cells between two pieces of glass. The middle layer of adhesive film used to be mostly EVA, but now high-efficiency cells like N-type TOPCon and HJT prefer POE film—because POE has low water vapor permeability, good electrical insulation, resists potential induced decay, and is resistant to moisture and heat aging. It can be stored outdoors for 20 to 30 years and has a longer lifespan than EVA. When film factories mass-produce, the wide film is cut into module sizes, and the cut edges, recoil scraps, and test machine materials are all clean POE, with almost no impurities. These scraps are specially recycled and pelletized, becoming the main source of recycled POE pellets on the market. The industry has long had dedicated teams to collect POE and EVA edge strips from photovoltaic factories, and this is the business.
This also explains another characteristic of recycled POE: it's clean, but not large in quantity and concentrated in sources. Because it's not widely collected from post-consumer waste, but rather follows the expansion of the photovoltaic industry—the more photovoltaic film produces, the more scraps there are. The standard recycling method is: separate photovoltaic edge strips by material (don't mix POE and EVA), crush, clean, and pelletize, then grade them by fat dissolution and use. POE scraps from shoe materials, automotive interiors, and film factories are also supplementary sources. The following grading table is based on source and use.
Why are photovoltaic edge strips so valuable? First, they're clean—the film factory has just cut them off, with no soil or mixed materials; Second, weather resistance. POE is designed for outdoor use for 20 to 30 years, UV resistance, moisture and heat resistance, and this base remains even after regeneration; Third, the source is concentrated, following photovoltaic factories for stable volume. Of course, there are also considerations: POE and EVA are often placed together in photovoltaic edge strips, and PET composite edges must be separated during sorting; mixing them causes depreciation. So even so, the photovoltaic film edge material can be separated from the POE single-material and the mixed one, resulting in a different price and grade.
| Grade | Main Sources | Key Indicators | Typical Uses |
|---|
| Photovoltaic Film Edge Scrap Recycled POE | Photovoltaic POE Film Cutting Residue | Clean, weather-resistant, low moisture, good transparency | Toughened modification, transparent products, photovoltaic secondary materials |
| Toughened grade recycled POE | Factory sprue and film edge granulation | Compatible with PP/PE, improves impact resistance | PP/PE toughening, turnover boxes, packing straps |
| Automotive interior recycled POE | Car interior trim scraps | Low temperature flexibility, good hand feel | Car interior, soft components |
| Foaming Grade Recycled POE | Soft parts, shoe material scraps | Can be foamed, good elasticity | Foaming, cushioning, footwear materials |
| Blown film grade recycled POE | POE film scraps | Transparent, good machinability | Blown film, packaging |
| General-purpose blended recycled POE | Multi-source hybrid granulation | Performance fluctuates significantly | Low-grade modification and filler blending |
Explanation: POE is a relatively new category of polyolefin elastomers. Currently, recycling mainly refers to GB/T 40006.1 "Plastics—Recycled Plastics—Part 1: General Rules" and the corporate standards of various manufacturers. Photovoltaic film edge scraps are the main source of recycled POE. The indicators in the table are summarized from publicly available industry information and manufacturers' technical data. For more grades and physical property parameters, please refer to the manufacturer's official TDS.
Adding a little POE saves more than replacing the entire batch of material.
The cost-reduction logic of recycled POE is really different from other recycled materials. It doesn't ask you to replace the main material entirely; instead, it lets you 'add a pinch' to brittle recycled material. The amount is small, but it can improve the overall yield of the material. That's how the calculation should be done.
You can also see from the market and industry why POE is 'new.' POE has long been monopolized by several international major manufacturers, and the price is not low. It was only in recent years that domestic production breakthroughs have been gradually achieved. Because it is expensive and in high demand, the offcuts from the expansion of photovoltaic films are even more valuable—after these clean POE leftovers are recycled and pelletized, their price is more reasonable than virgin material, and their toughening effect is not bad. Naturally, they have become the low-key, cost-reducing materials that modification plants compete for. Unlike PP or ABS, which everyone is recycling, few people know about it, and even fewer know how to use it properly, which instead leaves cost-saving space for the factories that get in first.
| Cost item | New POE | Recycled POE | Difference Explanation |
|---|
| Price per ton of material | Higher | a bit lower | Recycling photovoltaic scraps has a price advantage |
| Toughening efficiency | Stable | Scraps from the same source are acceptable | Fluctuation in the toughening effect of impurities |
| Compatibility | Good with PP/PE | The same-source material is highly compatible. | Debris may affect the surface |
| Weather-resistant and low-temperature resistant | Good | Photovoltaic-grade scrap has good weather resistance | General material has average weather resistance |
| Mixing ratio | Precision Add | Try in small steps according to the effect | Adding too much will cause it to stretch and fall. |
| Comprehensive cost | Benchmark | Adding a little saves | Excessive amounts instead reduce intensity and increase cost |
Taking this account into consideration, the boundary list below helps you determine where POE should be mixed in and where it shouldn't.
Suitable for using recycled POE: toughening modification of PP/PE regrind; turnover boxes, strapping, automotive interior impact resistance; low-temperature resistance, foam cushioning components.
Photovoltaic module encapsulation: It requires extremely high weather resistance, light transmittance, and reliability. Do not use ordinary recycled POE directly; make sure it is photovoltaic grade.
Don't add too much: adding too much POE will reduce tensile strength. Start with small proportions and increase gradually to find the balance between impact resistance and strength.
Filter impurities first: If the impurities in the recycled material are not thoroughly filtered, even the best POE cannot save the toughness.
High-end optics and highly reliable components: you need to be cautious when using regular recycled POE; new material is more reliable.
One final reminder: Toughening with POE is a 'ratio matter,' not 'the more you add, the better.' Before placing an order, first make a small batch sample and tell the supplier about the regrind you have, the impact resistance level you want, and the existing process temperature so that they can help you determine the model and dosage of POE. Make sure the melt index is correct, impurities are filtered, and the dosage has been tested; only by handling these three things well can recycled POE really help you reduce costs without causing problems.
The secret of why turnover boxes don't crack lies in that small handful of granules
This matter is not new in the turnover box circle. Ningbo Kolon New Materials Co., Ltd. has dealt with many turnover box materials in this line of work. According to a typical scenario example, the names of people and factories have been anonymized.
There is a factory in East China that makes turnover boxes, using recycled PP material to make the boxes, keeping costs very low. However, customers have reported that in winter, the boxes crack easily when dropped, and the edges are full of white marks. The boss has considered adding new PP or fillers; adding new material wouldn't reduce the cost, and adding fillers would make them even more brittle, so they were stuck on what to do for quite a while.
Later, he approached Cologne New Materials. Cologne New Materials looked at his material and first said, don't rush to change the main material—the problem isn't cheap material, it's brittleness. The suggestion is: first filter out impurities from the return material, then add a bit of toughening-grade recycled POE, start with a small proportion and test upward, watching for drops and low-temperature impact. Choose POE models that are compatible with PP and have good fat dissolving effects, and stop when the ratio is sufficiently shock-resistant, stretchable, and doesn't collapse. This way, the main material is still cheap recycled material, and you only spend a small extra amount on toughening agent, so the box won't crack.
Colonew Materials also reminded him that toughening should be tested gradually: start with 10%, see how it performs in low-temperature impact tests; if it's not enough, add more, and stop once the impact resistance is sufficient. Adding too much POE will prevent the box from cracking, but the surface will become soft, dimensions may deviate, tensile strength will decrease, and costs will rise. In addition, dust and metal scraps in the recycled material must be thoroughly filtered out; if impurities are mixed in, even the best POE cannot compensate for those defects. The melt flow index of this batch also needs to match the existing production line; if the melt flow index is too far off, dispersion will be uneven, resulting in boxes with inconsistent hardness.
After trying it out, complaints about the boxes cracking have noticeably decreased, and the cost is much lower than completely replacing with new PP. POE, though not used in large amounts, acts like a shock absorber for brittle materials. This is also why Ningbo Cologne New Materials Co., Ltd., when promoting recycled POE, usually first looks at where your material is brittle and then adjusts the toughening ratio—it is meant to modify the structure, not just to increase tonnage or go through the motions.
Now this factory has already treated recycled POE as a part of the regular formula, testing each batch of recycled material for brittleness first, and then deciding how much to mix in. Looking back, the problem with the boxes that cracked at the time was never that the recycled material was cheap, but that they lacked the small amount of elastomer that would restore the toughness.
POE toughening, adding too much is another matter
After laying out so much background, it all comes down to a single table in the end—just follow it and you won't go wrong. Regenerative POE is a low-key player; if used in the right place, it delivers great efficiency with minimal effort, but if used in the wrong place, it wastes money and reduces performance, so you really need to follow the table.
| Application scenario | Recommendation Level | Precautions | When not to use |
|---|
| PP/PE Toughening | Toughened Grade Recycled POE | Mix 10%-30% in small steps for testing | Excessive attention to stretching |
| Turnover box/packing strap impact resistance | Toughened Grade Recycled POE | First filter out the impurities | Do not use miscellaneous materials |
| Automotive interior soft parts | Automotive interior recycled POE | Check smell and weather resistance | Do not use for high-reliability parts |
| Low-temperature resistant container | Recycled POE | Low temperature flexibility | Do not use ordinary materials |
| Foam cushioning | Foaming Grade Recycled POE | Check foaming | Do not use crosslinking material |
| Photovoltaic Encapsulation | Assess carefully | Requires photovoltaic-grade certification | Do not touch ordinary regeneration |
Even new things have scraps, and the story of recycled POE is just beginning. Those who know the industry have long been secretly taking advantage of this bargain.
Recycled POE, a low-key toughening and cost-reducing material
Ningbo Kolon New Materials Co., Ltd. has long been supplying recycled POE materials, covering different grades and types, and is applied in scenarios such as photovoltaic film scrap recycling, elastomer toughening modification, and PP/PE impact modification. What cost-saving opportunities are hidden in photovoltaic film scraps? How should the blending ratio be determined? Stop forcing brittle materials.
