Let me give you a set of numbers: a 500ml PET beverage bottle has a recycling price of just over 0.1 yuan; But the slices cut from them are heat-washed, sorted, pelletized, and tacosified, and made into a ton of recycled slices, worth about 70-80% of ordinary new material—and the path it has taken is the backward path of the long journey from petroleum to new plastic. The price difference in between is the cake everyone in the recycled PET chain gets to know.
Let's take two minutes to get to know the main character. Ningbo Kelon New Materials Co., Ltd. is a plastic raw material supplier integrating industry and trade, deeply cultivating the recycled plastic raw material field for many years, covering PP, PE, ABS, PC, PET, and other fields. Today's star is recycled PET bottle flakes, commonly abbreviated as rPET in the industry. You're familiar with its origin: after drinking, you casually throw mineral water bottles, cola bottles, and cooking oil bottles into recycling bins. After recycling, removing labels, crushing, hot washing, and sorting, they turn into transparent fragments the size of fingernails—these are called "bottle flakes"; The bottle flakes are then sent to pellet or solid-phase tasting to become recycled PET raw materials that can be spinn, pulled, blown, or made into strapping tapes. You are more familiar with its origin: your fleece sweatshirts, insulated cup sleeves, takeout takeout boxes, and plastic steel strapping tapes for warehouse bundles all stand behind the material rPET.
Recycling is not synonymous with downgrade; sorting is the real dividing line
When many people hear "recycled PET," their first reaction is "recycled material is definitely not as good as new material." This is only half true. The gap between recycled PET and new material has little to do with "once used"; the root cause lies in "not separating thoroughly and not cleaning properly."
A bottle mixed with PVC bottles, labeled with adhesive, and stained with grease, cannot be saved by any process after cutting; Conversely, strictly sorted and thoroughly heat-cleaned bottles at the source produce fibers and sheets with such small performance that you can barely notice the quality difference from new materials. GB/T 40006.9—2021 "Plastics—Recycled Plastics Part 9: Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) Materials" directly includes this in the standard: Premium bottle flakes require PVC impurities ≤ 50mg/kg, polyolefin impurities ≤ 50mg/kg, and non-PET residues ≤50mg/kg. Think about these numbers—what does 50mg/kg mean? Only 50 grams of impurities can be mixed in one ton of material. The standard is about "sorting thoroughly, and whether it's washed thoroughly."
So stop asking "Is recycled PET good?" This question itself is asking in the wrong direction. What you really need to ask is: Is this bottle of flakes sorted thoroughly? Is it thoroughly washed? Is the viscosity of each batch stable? Having these few questions clarified is more effective than agonizing over the word "regenerated."
Figure 1 Recycled PET Chip Sorting and Cleaning Line
The value of the bottle chips is written in the viscosity and impurity ledgers
To understand recycled PET, remember one term: intrinsic viscosity, called IV in jargon, which is dL/g. You can think of it as the "height" of the PET molecular chain—the longer the molecular chain and the higher the viscosity, the sturdier and more upright the product. When a beverage bottle is first recycled, the IV is about 0.75; but every time PET undergoes high-temperature melting, the molecular chain is "cut" in sections, causing IV to fall down a bit. So the entire recycled PET process revolves around two things: preserving IV as much as possible and washing impurities as thoroughly as possible.
First step: sorting and recycling. Recycled bottles are first magnetically sorted to remove iron, then manually removed impurities, then put into a near-infrared optical sorter, where transparent, blue, and green bottles are separated by color and material, and any mixed PVC bottles, PE caps, and label paper are removed one by one. PVC is the number one enemy of PET recycling—both PET and PVC are transparent hard sheets, almost indistinguishable with the naked eye. But once mixed in with tens of milligrams per kilogram, the spinning fibers break and the sheets develop crystalline dots. This process relies on photoelectric and magnetic separation, not on the eyes of experienced craftsmen.
Second step: crushing and hot washing. After the bottle is removed and the cap removed, it is broken into 6 to 14 mm fragments, then placed in a hot alkaline water tank at 85 to 95 degrees Celsius, with 1% to 3% flake soda and detergent, soaked for ten to twenty minutes. The label adhesive, sugar stains, and oil stains are boiled off, then subjected to high-speed friction cleaning and multi-stage rinsing. This process directly determines whether non-PET residue can be compressed to within the standard 50 milligrams per kilogram. You can tell if it is clean by smell—qualified bottle chips have almost no odor, and if washed carelessly, they have a sweet and sour sourness near the odor.
The third stage: dehydration, crystallization, and drying. PET is most afraid of water. Before melting, the moisture content must be kept very low. Before pelletizing, the moisture content is generally required to be at least 0.05%. Otherwise, the chain will break as soon as it is exposed to high temperatures, causing the IV to collapse on the spot. Therefore, before granulation, bottle flakes undergo crystallization and deep drying to balance moisture and crystallinity together.
The fourth step is granulation or solid-phase tackification (industry abbreviation SSP). Ordinary bottle flakes are directly melted for granulation, causing the IV to drop a bit; To achieve high viscosity grade and to reach bottle-grade levels, one step further is solid-phase tack enhancement—re-lengthening molecular chains under vacuum and below melting point, restoring IV to 0.85 or even above 0.9. With this extra step, equipment, energy consumption, and time all add up, and cost and value rise accordingly.
This is why for the same "beverage bottle recycled material," fiber-grade material sells for one price, sheet grade sells for one price, bottle-grade food contact grade sells for another. The problem isn't the raw materials—the raw materials are all from the bottles you discarded; The problem is whether these four steps are done thoroughly. After so many years of supplying recycled plastics, Ningbo Kelong New Materials Co., Ltd.'s top advice to customers is always: first clearly state your purpose and process, then negotiate the price. Don't ask "How much per ton?" right away.
One more thing must be made clear: the most valuable part of recycled PET is the "bottle-to-bottle" line. Ordinary bottle flakes are washed and pelletized, made into fibers, sheets, and strapping—the compliance threshold is relatively clear; But if you remake it into a beverage bottle, everything changes—the bottle contains the ingestible content, and residual acetaldehyde, heavy metal antimony, and any upstream bottle detergent or odor must be reduced to extremely low levels during deep purification. The entire batch must meet the requirements of the GB 4806 series of national food contact material standards and complete the necessary compliance approvals. This is why bottle-grade food contact materials are expensive and have strict certification. Ordinary users should never use fiber-grade bottle flakes for food packaging—that doesn't save money, it's setting a trap for yourself.
The table below lists the common grades and indicators of recycled PET on the market, making it easier for you to find the right position for your intended use. Data is based on GB/T 40006.9—2021 Premium and Qualified Bottle Flakes Requirements and Industry Public Information.
| Grade Name | Main Source/Process | Key Indicators | Typical Uses |
|---|
| Bottle-Level rPET (Food Contact Grade) | Bottle-to-bottle deep purification + solid-phase tack increase | IV about 0.80 or above, low acetaldehyde, extremely low non-PET residue, must comply with GB 4806 series food contact material standards | Recycled beverage bottles and food packaging |
| Sheet-grade rPET flakes | Hot wash bottle flake granulation/thickening | IV about 0.76–0.84, crystallinity and color can be controlled | Thermoformed trays, blister packs, sheets |
| Fiber-grade bottle flakes (premium grade) | Transparent Bottle Hot Wash Sorting | IV ≥ 0.72, PVC ≤ 50 mg/kg, non-PET residue ≤ 50 mg/kg | Spun recycled polyester staple fiber, filament, nonwoven fabric |
| Fiber-grade bottle flakes (qualified product) | Mixed bottle hot wash | IV ≥ 0.63, PVC ≤ 300 mg/kg, non-PET residue ≤ 400 mg/kg | Ordinary filling cotton, geotextile, low-end yarn |
| High-viscosity thickening grade flakes | Solid Phase Thickening SSP | IV approximately above 0.90 | Plastic steel packing straps, binding ropes, industrial threads |
| General Injection Molding / Modified Grade | Recycling bottle granulation, multi-color mixing | IV is about 0.6, and the ash content may be relatively high | Injection molded miscellaneous parts, modified blended fillers |
Table Note: The above indicators are compiled according to the requirements for premium/qualified bottle flakes in GB/T 40006.9—2021 and publicly available industry information; for bottle-to-bottle applications in contact with food, they must also comply with the GB 4806 series national standards for food contact materials and corresponding compliance approvals. For more grades and physical property parameters, refer to the official TDS from the manufacturer.
Saving on material costs is just the beginning; yield and returns are the real profit variables.
Many factory owners calculating the costs of recycled PET only focus on 'how much a ton of virgin material costs and how much a ton of recycled material costs,' which is only half the calculation. The material price is indeed the main component — at the same IV level, recycled PET flakes or chips are usually cheaper than virgin material, which is the fundamental reason why recycling material is widely used in high-volume industries like fiber and strapping. But the other half of the cost is hidden in the downstream and is not listed on the quotation sheet.
If the IV is unstable, the filament will break during spinning, and the sheets will develop crystalline spots and uneven thickness; if the moisture is excessive, bubbles will form as soon as the machine starts, and the output will be inconsistent; if impurities are not thoroughly cleaned, the sheets produced will turn yellow and have black spots, causing the entire batch to be downgraded. All these losses are ultimately recorded in your yield rate and returns. This is also a point that Ningbo Kolon New Materials Co., Ltd. repeatedly emphasizes to customers: the difference in the quotation is visible, but the yield accounting is not. Focusing only on the visible price difference to draw conclusions can easily result in losing the big picture while worrying about the small details.
Breaking down this bill, it’s roughly like this:
| Cost item | Virgin PET | Recycled PET (food grade) | Difference Explanation |
|---|
| Raw material purchase price | Benchmark price | Slightly lower, fluctuates with the bottle sheet market | The main advantage of recycled materials is most evident in fiber/strapping scenarios |
| Batch stability | IV narrow, small fluctuations | Depends on the sorting and tackifying process | For the rating, you need a test report to feel secure. |
| Processing yield | High, the machine is fully operational | There may be fluctuations during the initial machine adjustment | Moisture and IV not meeting standards directly reflect on the scrap rate. |
| Color difference and appearance | Even | Multicolored material tends to be yellowish and grayish | The natural transparent grade is the most expensive, while the mixed color grade is the cheapest. |
| Compliance and Certification | Mature | Food contact requires separate compliance | Non-food scenarios have little impact, and bottle-level costs are calculated separately |
| Comprehensive cost | Tall | The sales volume scenario is obviously lower | You must take yield and returns into account before drawing a conclusion. |
Here's another list of boundaries for you, indicating which parts can safely use recycled materials and which areas require extra caution:
Safe to use: recycled polyester staple fiber, geotextiles, filling cotton; plastic steel strapping, binding tape; thermoformed sheets for non-food pallets and blister packaging; injection-molded miscellaneous parts and modified fillers with low appearance requirements.
Be careful: For transparent packaging with high requirements for transparency and hue, you need to choose natural transparent grade; for industrial threads and high-tensile packing straps with high strength requirements, you need to use high-adhesion grade with IV around 0.9 or above.
Do not touch: do not use bottles that directly contain food or beverages. Ordinary recycled bottle flakes are not acceptable; they must undergo deep purification and comply with the GB 4806 series food contact material standards and corresponding regulations. Materials from unknown sources, medical waste, or pesticide packaging bottles are explicitly not applicable according to the standards, no matter how cheap they are.
Orders don't fail because the materials are expensive; they fail because 'why is this batch different from the last one?'
Let me tell you a situation commonly encountered in the factory (customer information has been anonymized for protection). A local factory in Ningbo producing recycled polyester staple fiber had repeatedly run into problems with fiber-grade PET flakes in past years: trying to save money, they bought a batch of flakes that were supposedly qualified; they looked clear on the surface, but when processed, the IV kept fluctuating, and there were some scattered PVC impurities inside. The spinning broke threads every few days, the workshop staff had to stay by the machines to constantly adjust parameters, and ultimately the finished product didn’t meet strength standards, forcing them to return an entire batch.
A turning point came when they connected with Ningbo Kolon New Materials Co., Ltd. Kolon New Materials didn’t rush to quote; they first inquired thoroughly about this spinning factory’s processes, line speeds, and requirements for IV and color. Then they matched the materials according to the premium product standards of GB/T 40006.9: each batch came with a test report, IV fluctuations were kept within a narrow range, PVC and polyolefin impurities were strictly within the standard limits, and moisture content was delivered according to the machine’s specifications. After switching materials, the breakage rate noticeably decreased, the workshop no longer had to fire-fight every day, and the finished product strength returned to a stable range. Overall, though the unit price of the bottle flakes was slightly higher, downtime and returns were greatly reduced, making this deal actually more cost-effective.
In the recycled PET industry, what you buy is never 'cheap stuff,' but 'cheap stuff that is the same in every batch.' The four words 'batch consistency' may sound plain, but they exactly hit the threshold of whether recycled materials can truly be used in mass production; it cannot be bypassed.
(Note: The above scenarios are summarized for the purpose of explaining the selection logic and do not refer to any specific customer orders.)
Think about the purpose first, so you won't buy the wrong bottle or tablet.
Finally, summarize common application scenarios and recommended levels into a quick reference table. Use it when purchasing to avoid flipping back and forth.
| Application Scenarios | Recommended Level | Precautions | When Not to Use |
|---|
| Recycled PET staple fiber/spinning | Fiber-grade bottle flakes, top quality, IV≥0.72 | Monitor IV fluctuations and PVC impurities | Use high-end yarn for qualified grade |
| Geotextile/filling cotton | Fiber-grade qualified material is sufficient | Accept some color variation | Use cautiously for high-tensile industrial applications |
| Plastic-steel strapping | High adhesion, IV about 0.9 | Test breaking tensile strength | Standard grade easily breaks under tension |
| Thermoformed sheets/takeout boxes | Sheet-grade, IV 0.76—0.84 | Control crystallization and color tone | Food contact requires compliance |
| Recycled beverage bottles/food packaging | Bottle-grade, food-contact grade | Must comply with GB 4806 series and follow regulations | Standard flakes strictly prohibited for food use |
| Modified/injection-molded parts | Standard recycled PET chips | Accept ash content and color variation | Use cautiously for high-precision structural parts |
You might think recycled PET saves material costs, but what it really saves is the longest path of turning petroleum into new plastic.
