现场一:样件手感惊艳,量产批次色差明显——“每批颜色都不太一样”,下游频频投诉;
现场二:注塑效率是上去了,但飞边、缺胶、粘模轮着来——加工窗口窄,工艺没跟上;
1. 先分症状:手感不对 → 查交联度(料温、硫化温度窗口);色差 → 查配色分散(色母牌号、分散工艺);脱层 → 查基材匹配(牌号是不是针对该基材);
2. 再看批次:同牌号不同批次对比——同批次内稳定、批次间飘,是工艺问题;批次间稳定但都不达标,是选型问题;

- 1. 要牌号认证清单:食品接触件,认证覆盖到具体牌号,别只看“系列认证”;
- 2. 要 ΔE 标准:色差要求写进验收(如 ΔE≤1.5),每批测色,别等成品被投诉再补测;
- 3. 要手感样块:每批保留标准手感样块,对比验收——手感是主观的,样块是客观的;
Medical devices use TPSIV, but it feels like silicone but costs three times more; customers complain it's expensive but can't leave it. This money has to be spent on feel and certification.
Mess scene: TPSIV project, where did the money fall
TPSIV (Silicone-based thermoplastic vulcanized glue) is the "tactile aristocracy" of the TPE family—silicone-like smooth touch, combined with injection molding machine efficiency, making it highly sought after in watch straps, phone cases, and baby products.
But it's also a "delicate" tier, typical losing scene:
Live 1: Samples feel stunning, mass production batch color difference is obvious—"each batch has a different color," downstream complains frequently;
On-site 2: Injection molding efficiency has improved, but flash, glue shortage, and mold sticking keep up — the processing window is narrow, the process hasn't kept up;
On-site 3: The silicone feel is good, but the overmolding doesn't stick well and peels off easily—the substrate and system don't match.
TPSIV Project losses rarely come from "poor materials," mostly because "both sides are neglected"—silicone feel is its value, injection molding efficiency is its ledger; both ends are needed, and one imbalance means a loss.
Technical Quote: TPSIV's business is about "feel" and "efficiency"—feel drops a notch, premium disappears; If efficiency drops, profits disappear.
TPSIV's popularity is directly related to the explosive growth of wearables—smartwatches, straps, VR devices, true wireless earbuds. These "skin-pressed" products require extremely high hand feel: smooth, non-sticky,
not stuffy, and not causing skin allergies.
Traditional silicone feels good but vulcanizes slowly and costs more; Ordinary TPE is more efficient but feels a notch worse.
TPSIV Combining the two—silicone feel and injection molding efficiency—are precisely at the demand point for wearable devices. So in recent years, TPSIV usage has visibly increased in the watch strap and earphone accessory market.
Reason Analysis: The conflict between feel and efficiency lies in the details
TPSIV Silicone (organosilicon) and thermoplastic elastomer are dynamically vulcanized together; silicone provides feel, plastic provides efficiency. But the contradiction between these two ends lies in the details:
Reason One · Crosslinking degree determines feel: Insufficient silicone crosslinking makes the hand feel sticky and not rebounding; Over-crosslinking causes the surface to dry and hard.
Crosslinking degree is the "lifeblood" of TPSIV's hand feel, determined by formula and temperature.
Reason 2 · Color dispersion determines color difference: TPSIV substrates require high masterbatch dispersion, pigments are unevenly dispersed, causing ΔE to drift between batches—color difference complaints are mostly due to color matching and dispersion process issues, not the material itself.
Reason 3 · Substrate matching determines adhesion: TPSIV overmolding requires different specialized grades for PC, ABS, and PA—one grade covers all substrates, delamination is inevitable.
Three reasons correspond to three types of failures—tactile failure depends on crosslinking, color difference depends on dispersion, delamination failure depends on substrate.
TPSIV "handfeel" is highly related to temperature. The same strap feels stiff in winter and softer in summer—TPSIV's firmness is sensitive to temperature, which is a characteristic of silicone.
When designing products, include "operating environment temperature" in your selection requirements: if the product is mainly used in summer, you can set the hardness higher; If it's used in winter, make sure the low-temperature flexibility meets the standard.
Don't judge mass-produced winter parts by the feel of summer prototyping—the difference between seasons isn't about cutting corners, but about temperature characteristics.
Troubleshooting steps: Three steps to identify loss points
TPSIV If the project has issues, follow three steps to check:
1. First, sort out symptoms: Discomfort → Check crosslinking degree (material temperature, vulcanization temperature window); Color difference → Check color mixing dispersion (masterbatch grade, dispersion process); Delamination → Check substrate matching (whether the grade is for the substrate);
2. Next, look at the batch: Compare batches of the same grade—stable within the same batch but floating between batches, which is a process issue; Stable between batches but none meet standards, which is a selection issue;
3. Three certifications: For food contact parts, first check whether certifications (FDA, LFGB, etc.) cover the actual grade—"this series has been certified" and "this grade has been certified" are two different things.
Three steps complete, problem in place—don't switch materials right away, locate first, then act.
Another efficient step during inspection: dig up samples and keep them. When the TPSIV project goes live, keep "standard sample blocks"—during the prototyping stage, seal the blocks confirmed by all parties for tactile feel, color, and hardness.
When mass production disputes, compare mass-produced parts with standard sample blocks side by side to clearly see color difference, feel, and hardness.
For projects without standard sample blocks, if problems arise, everyone will have their own story, and the cost of arguing is extremely high.
This rule applies to all materials sensitive to hand feel, especially TPSIV—its selling point is hand feel, and without standards, acceptance has no basis.
How to adjust the texture when it feels wrong: Focusing on materials, processes, and systems
Material direction: prioritize color dispersion solutions for color difference issues (switch to masterbatch with better dispersibility, adjust addition methods); For tactile issues, first adjust the cross-linking window. Half of TPSIV's "material issues" are formulation engineering problems.
Process direction: TPSIV has a narrow processing window, and the three numbers must be locked tightly; Drying should also be standardized (silicone ingredients are sensitive to moisture). The process window is locked, so color difference and tactile feel can be stabilized.
System direction: If TPSIV can't withstand (continuous 150°C+, strong solvent, ultra-high wear resistance), don't force TPSIV, go back to TPV or TPEE; Conversely, if you want silicone feel, don't force it with SEBS—system boundaries are the first wall in selection.
Three directions: process first, then formulation, finally system—TPSIV rework, with the process taking up the majority.
TPSIV The unit price is high, but its "competitor" is not ordinary TPE, but silicone vulcanized parts—when considering silicone vulcanization time, mold quantity, and labor costs, the overall cost of TPSIV injection molding is often lower.
When evaluating TPSIV, don't just compare by material unit price; calculate the total cost by "piece": silicone molds are expensive and have long lead times; TPSIV molds are cheap and deliver quickly, especially cost-effective for small batch products. When you factor in the parts, TPSIV's high price becomes savings.
TPSIV injection molding temperature and vulcanization temperature are two different concepts—material temperature is responsible for flow, vulcanization temperature is responsible for cross-linking, and both windows must be locked.
Material temperature is insufficient for surface flow marks; Insufficient vulcanization temperature, insufficient crosslinking, sticky feel; Over-vulcanization makes the surface brittle.
Many factories use ordinary TPE to adjust the machine, only checking the material temperature and not the vulcanization window, resulting in unstable texture of the punched parts.
Correct method: adjust the machine according to the TDS grade of "material temperature + vulcanization temperature" dual-window setup, first verify the feel in small batches, then scale up. This process takes half a day longer and can save a month of rework.

Cologne Customer Case: Batch Color Difference, Saved by Changing System and Grade
A modified material application factory in Tianjin experienced significant color differences in batches of TPSIV parts, and the finished products were frequently complained about, to the point that the customer considered abandoning the project. Cologne's investigation found that the original system did not have enough tolerance for color difference and crosslinking degree. By switching the system and grade (e.g., from SEBS-based to TPV-based), the color difference stabilized, and the delivery cycle was even reduced to within 7 days.
Color differences reaching an irredeemable level are often due to insufficient system tolerance—switching to a system with higher tolerance is much easier than repeatedly adjusting colors. When choosing a model, asking one more question, 'Can this system accommodate color variation?' can save half a year of disputes.
Check these four items when the TPSIV arrives, and compare the feel with the sample.
TPSIV acceptance, four actions:
- 1. Required material grade certification list: Food contact parts, certification should cover the specific grade, don't just look at 'series certification';
- 2. ΔE Standard: The color difference requirement should be written into the acceptance criteria (e.g., ΔE ≤ 1.5), measure the color for each batch, and do not wait until the finished product receives complaints to re-test.
- 3. Samples for tactile feel: Retain standard tactile samples for each batch for comparison and acceptance — the feel is subjective, the samples are objective;
- 4. Conduct overmolding actual test: Perform peel tests according to the actual substrate, and compare with TPSIV dedicated grades.
Among the four items, the color difference standard and the sample block comparison are the easiest to be skipped — and these two are precisely the main points of TPSIV complaints.
For TPSIV prototypes, we need to produce samples with several different hardness levels. When it comes to feel, trying out a few levels by hand is more reliable than listening to several opinions.
The wearable device market is still growing, but competition is fierce, and brands will have higher demands for the feel of their products—'feels premium' is an obsession for product managers, and it is also an opportunity for TPSIV.
At the supplier level, whoever can ensure stable color consistency and uniform texture will be able to capture this wave of demand.
When selecting a model, considering the 'supplier's color difference management capability' is more forward-looking than simply comparing prices.
Reliable suppliers will record the actual ΔE value of each batch and attach it when shipping; the purchaser randomly selects a batch to measure the color and check it against the record — if they match, it indicates proper management.
If it doesn't match, be wary that 'the record may be fabricated'.
Summary
If you are stuck on the selection of TPSIV, send over the operating conditions, we will go through them, and leave the rest to validation.
TPSIV is a 'dual champion of feel and efficiency': the smoothness of silicone and the productivity of injection molding. But wanting both means you have to keep an eye on both—monitor the crosslinking level for feel, check dispersion for color difference, and pay attention to the substrate for adhesion. Lock in these three details, and it becomes a selling point on your product.
