183 Coffee machine and blender components
Coffee machine operating condition list
Internal coffee machine includes 90-100°C hot water, steam, 9-15 bar pressure, and food contact requirements.
These four components combined mean ordinary engineering plastics are directly eliminated. Coffee machines are among the most demanding categories of home appliances with material requirements and also the highest cost.
Food contact is a hard threshold
All coffee machine components that come into contact with water and coffee must pass food contact certification: domestic GB 4806.7, EU 10/2011, US FDA 21 CFR.
Triple certifications are established simultaneously to be considered compliant. Not all PA66 can pass food grade; you need to choose a certified grade, and non-food-grade additives must not be added during processing.
On-site Replica: Six Temperature Zones of a Coffee Machine
In April 2025, in the laboratory of a coffee machine factory in Ningbo, R&D engineers showed us an infrared thermal image: a fully automatic coffee machine under development, twenty minutes after startup, the temperature of six parts of the machine body spread from 40°C to 120°C in gradients—120°C near the boiler, 95°C at the water connector, 55°C in the bean chamber, and 45°C on the casing.
"One machine has six temperature zones, and plastic parts are loaded according to these zones—this is the biggest challenge in selecting coffee machine materials." When the engineer said this, we underlined this sentence in our notebook.
Cutting materials by temperature zone sounds simple, but it's actually the industry's most common failure: seals near boilers harden and crack after just a few years using ordinary silicone; water pipe joints use general-purpose PA that absorbs water but then drifts to size, seals fail and leak; bean bin parts use materials containing precipitates—coffee oil and precipitate mixed together, which can't be cleaned even after cleaning.
We follow the temperature zone suggestion: boiler zone seals with fluorine-free rubber or silicone special brands; water connectors use hydrolysis-resistant PA special brands (repeated hot water flushing with food contact double thresholds); only then do bean silos and casing parts use general materials to save costs.
This factory's models later received dual industry certifications for energy efficiency and durability. Their experience was: money spent on temperature-zone materials for coffee machines was rewarded by the selling point of "no water line failures for ten years."
Material selection for high-temperature water circuits
Boiler and heating chamber lining: use stainless steel or PPSU. Water pipes and fittings: use food-grade PA12 or PPSU, resistant to 100°C hot water and steam. Water pump and valve body: use PPS or food-grade PA66-GF30. Ordinary PA66 hydrolyzes quickly in 100°C hot water and must be hydrolyzed-resistant or long-chain (PA12).
PPSU Why choose high-end
PPSU (polyphenylsulfone) is resistant to 200°C, hydrolyzable, food-grade, and can be sterilized by steam, making it a high-end material for coffee machines and baby bottles.
The drawbacks are its high price (4-6 times that of PA66) and high processing temperature (360-400°C).
Mid- to low-end coffee machines use a combination of food-grade PP and PA12, and only uses PPSU for key high-temperature components.
Deeper Level: Compliance Accounts for Food Contact
Talking about coffee machines and blenders, we can't avoid the issue of food contact material compliance. Once you calculate this clearly, many price differences become clear.
Food contact materials follow the GB 4806 system domestically, EC 1935/2004 plus LFGB for exports to Europe, and FDA for the US—the test items in these three systems are not exactly the same, but they all focus on three core points: migration (how much from plastic flows into the food), sensory (no odor), and limits on specific substances (monomers, additive residues).
's specific impact on PA systems is as follows: caprolactam residue is a special indicator for PA6, and PA66 cyclic oligomers are also on the monitoring list; Release agents and colorants must be food-grade grades, and general industrial-grade materials are directly excluded; The list for additives like antibacterial agents and lubricating agents is much narrower than for industrial materials.
's cost structure for compliance is: food-grade brands are 15-30% more expensive than industrial brands of the same performance, plus annual migration tests and system audits. This money can't be saved—penalties for food contact violations are batch recalls and removals, and a single incident can wipe out the brand's reputation built over years.
's practical advice for OEMs: Lock the waterway and food contact point material lists to food-grade brands, and filter the supplier directory by 'GB 4806 full report'; Release the non-contact points and use industrial brands to reduce costs. Separate the two lines, and both compliance and cost have their own solutions.
High-Speed Blender Challenge
Blender speed 30,000-50,000 rpm, the blade assembly bearing housing and cup body must withstand high-speed vibrations.
Use food-grade PC or Tritan (copolyester) for the cup body, and do not use PA—PA is opaque and may have odors.
Use PA66-GF30 for knife group mounting bases, which must withstand fatigue and vibration. Noise is the biggest pain point for blenders, so vibration damping is needed structurally.
The boundary between cost reduction and safety
Small appliances face significant cost reduction, but there are three areas where coffee machines cannot be reduced: high-temperature water passages (leaks and burns), pressure chambers (burst risk), and food contact surfaces (risk of precipitation).
These three incidents are safety incidents, not maintenance issues but recall issues. Lowerable parts are casing decorative parts and non-pressure-bearing parts.
Engineering Testing: 4 mandatory tests
Test 1: Hot water resistance. 100°C hot water for 1000 hours, PA12 strength maintained at 92%, ordinary PA66 reduced to 55%—hot water route using PA12.
Test 2: Food contact. Food-grade PA12 passed GB 4806.7 + FDA + EU triple certification—certificate verification required.
Test 3: Pressure resistance. 15 bar pressure chamber, PPS-GF40 passed, PA66-GF30 deformed at 12 bar—high-pressure uses PPS.
Test 4: Blender vibration. At 30,000 rpm, vibration for 100 hours, PA66-GF30 mounting base showed no loosening, and PA66 was not reinforced.
Follow-up Question Three: The three most frequently asked questions when purchasing
First Question: Why is PPSU expensive but still highly sought after? PPSU (polyphenylsulfone) holds a position in coffee machine water parts because of three simultaneous factors: high temperature resistance (180°C steam sterilization without hydrolysis), impact resistance (not brittle), and mature food compliance (baby product product background). The downside is one word: expensive, with a unit price three times that of PA66. High-end machines use PPSU for core water circuit components, mid-range models use hydrolysis-resistant food-grade PA modified brand, entry-level models use PP—all three cost lines have viable options, and material dispensing is based on model positioning.
Question 2: What material requirements are required for high speed of a blender? Blender motor speed above 20,000 rpm, cup body connectors and transmission parts must resist vibration fatigue and impact (ice impact): toughened PA66 and Tritan-type transparent materials for partial discharge, transmission PA and transparent cup body Tritan. Blade group connectors are safety parts; verify under the worst no-load and full-load impact.
Question 3: How to manage steam valve precipitation issues? Repeated steam flushing carries out low molecules from the material, which fall into the water channel as a "white film" beyond scale. The management method is low precipitation plus first-month water quality sampling — precipitation issues are not listed on the physical property list; they must be tested according to the "boiling water precipitation test." Many quotes don't list this item, but high-end models are all checked. ### Calculate the material ledger: compliance premium for water parts
Materials account for water parts in coffee machines. Treat compliance costs as product strength, not cost items
Waterway Core Components (Boiler Outlet Joints, Waterway Tees) use food-grade hydrolysis-resistant PA modified brand, 30% more expensive than industrial-grade: the price difference per unit is about 8 yuan. The 8 yuan is made up of: food-grade base material premium, GB 4806 full migration testing and allocation, annual system audit allocation.
On the Other Side: Water Circuit Components are the "taste determinant" of coffee machines—precipitates directly affect water quality and taste, and high-end users are highly sensitive to this. The impact of "plastic smell" negative reviews in the industry has already been seen in previous cases.
Further Calculate Market Premium: Among the core differences between the 3000 yuan and 1500 yuan range, the waterway material system ranks among the top three—users may not understand the difference between PPSU and PA66, but the "ten years of waterway is pure and tasteless" promotion does.
's 8 yuan compliance investment leveraged a retail premium space in the thousand-yuan range, with a leverage rate among the top in the home appliance industry. The brand premium in the coffee machine industry is half the technical premium for extraction systems, and the other half is the "clean premium" for waterway materials—the latter is the value that modification suppliers can directly participate in. ### Boundary Declaration
| Operating Condition | Recommended Material |
|---|
| High-Temperature Water Pipe | Food-grade PA12 |
| Boiler Lining | Stainless Steel or PPSU |
| Pump Valve Body | PPS or Food-grade PA66-GF30 |
| Blender cup body | food-grade PC or Tritan |
| knife assembly fixed base | PA66 - GF30 |
Engineering memo
Coffee machine must undergo food contact certification + 100°C hot water + pressure resistance before mass production. Using PA12 or PPSU on high-temperature waterways will hydrolyze with ordinary PA66.
Practical Case: Common pitfalls and correct solutions
Pitfall 1: Selecting materials for coffee machines according to room temperature physical property tables without considering long-term operating temperature. Appliances operate long-term at 60-90°C, and no matter how high their strength is, they will still age and fail due to thermal aging. Correct answer: Use data after thermal aging to select materials. For PA66 working long-term at 80°C, choose grades resistant to thermal and oxygen aging. Pitfall 2: To reduce costs, replace reinforcing material with unreinforced material, or reduce GF30 to GF15. The glass fiber content in coffee machines is calculated, not just photographed. Correct answer: Reducing glass fiber content requires recalculating creep and strength, not based on experience. Pitfall 3: Noise and abnormal noises were checked last and found to be plastic parts rubbing or loose. Correct answer: Noise complaints make up a high proportion of home appliances, so the fit tolerances and self-lubrication of plastic parts must be determined during the design phase.
Reverse Case: A batch of returns due to odor in the bean warehouse
In September 2024, a negative review keyword appeared in e-commerce reviews for a coffee machine brand in South China: "coffee has a plastic smell." Quality control traced the issue for two weeks and focused on the bean warehouse — that batch of bean warehouses was replaced with cheap general-purpose PA material, lubricating additives precipitated inside, coffee beans stored in the warehouse for two days, and the surface absorbed odors.
Feedback Chain: Clustering negative reviews from e-commerce, inspection confirming excessive-quality items, all bean warehouses replaced in that batch, supplier rectification. The brand's losses are not limited to returns—the "plastic smell" label remains in e-commerce reviews for a long time, and searching for Lenovo follows suit.
Rectification plan: Doubang uses food-grade PP or ABS special labels, adds "odor sensory testing" upon arrival—three evaluators blindly test, and if two or more notice the odor, the return is awarded.
The e-commerce head of this factory later said at a supply chain meeting: "Excessive migration is determined by the detector, odor is determined by the consumer's nose—the latter is stricter, and there's no national standard to speak for you."
The sensory issues with food contact parts are areas where instruments cannot fully measure them. Writing a person's nose into factory standards sounds unscientific, but in reality, even the most expensive inspection instruments can't match this line of defense. ### Extended Judgment: Two Easily Confused Concepts
In discussions about material selection for coffee machinery, two concepts have been confused for years. The first is flame retardancy and insulation.
Flame retardant solves the problem of no fire, while insulation and anti-electric mark protection solve the problem of no creeping or breakdown. These are two different matters.
One material can be flame-retardant with V-0, but CTI is only 250V, so installing it on live parts can still cause problems.
The second is strength and toughness. Glass fiber reinforcement increases strength but reduces toughness; toughness increases toughness but reduces strength and rigidity.
On the same part, structural parts require strength, while fasteners require toughness. Generally, there are two types of materials, using one material for convenience. Otherwise, the clip breaks or the body cracks.
Write down these three things in a form and send it to suppliers—it's more effective than making ten phone calls—the cost of coffee machine selection and communication is basically spent on repeatedly confirming these points.
The final Q&A: The judgment at three critical moments
Decision One: Should mid-range models use PPSU? Classification by water channel location: PPSU for boiler direct connection and steam stations; for other water sections, food-grade hydrolysis-resistant PA modified cards are sufficient—full water-line PPSU is cost out of control, not using all is taste risk. Grading and scraping make the 8 yuan compliant investment spend where it matters.
Dilemma 2: Customers bargain by saying "Other brands don't use food-grade or have issues." Don't argue about individual cases; set up mechanisms: excessive migration is a random inspection probability issue; if nothing happens, it means you haven't been drawn yet. The positioning of food contact compliance is not "low probability of accidents," but "exemption from liability in case of incidents"—the commercial value of compliance documents is only fully realized in times of crisis.
Dilemma 3: Can the cup body connector of a blender be downshifted? No: That is the safety position where "high speed plus impact" intersect; the memory of empty cup bursts in the blender industry is still vivid. Downshifting the safety position saves small money but damages product trust—don't pay the same lesson for this group again. ### Additional note: Three on-site judgment signals
Signal 1: Water leakage at the water connector, sealing ring intact. Float the water absorption size of the joint body, check the hydrolysis data and absorption rate of the material, replace with hydrolysis resistance brand, and adjust the sealing ring to just keep it alive.
Signal 2: Bean silo and water tank odors. Prelude to excessive precipitate levels; immediately stop using and replace with food-grade labels; sensory testing meets factory standards.
Signal 3: Boiler area seals harden and crack. Insufficient temperature resistance or vulcanization system mismatched; choose between fluororubber or silicone specialty brands; ordinary rubber has no chance in this position. ### Verification sequence: Complete the three steps before placing an order
Step 1, temperature zones: place all plastic parts of the machine according to thermal images according to temperature zones, configuring boiler, water, and room temperature zones.
Step two, compliance inspection: food contact points are fully inspected according to GB 4806, export models are additionally tested according to the target market system, sensory test (odor) is specified as factory standard.
Step three, precipitation test: boiling water precipitation combined with long-term soaking for dual testing, precipitate data is evaluated in conjunction with water taste. After completing these three steps, water passage parts can be worthy of the "entry part" positioning.
Conclusion
A couple of days ago, I got a phone call—the earlier you ask about material selection, the easier it is to ask.
For these types of parts, material selection and mold testing can be discussed together
