(Chi Mei)
(Formosa)

How much is HIPS per kilogram? Grade matching — the price of high-impact polystyrene hides in impact strength
How much is HIPS per kilogram?
Quotes range from CNY 8/kg to CNY 19/kg. HIPS (high-impact polystyrene) is not one material: general, high-impact, flame-retardant, food-grade and extrusion grades each carry a different price. Comparing a general-purpose quote with a flame-retardant one is not price comparison; it is how you get fooled.
1. Mainstream grade quotes (imported + domestic) — recent market references; live prices subject to same-day inquiry.
Chi Mei
PH-888H, high impact, high-temperature-resistant, antistatic, approx. CNY 10-11/kg. Zhenjiang Chi Mei; injection grade; appliance housings, daily products.
PH-88, high impact, UV-resistant, approx. CNY 13/kg. Taiwan Chi Mei; high-temperature-resistant; automotive, appliances.
PH-879, flame-retardant V0, approx. CNY 18-19/kg. Halogen-free flame retardancy; electronic and appliance housings.
PH-858, general-purpose, approx. CNY 10/kg. Injection grade; general products.
Yangzi BASF
466F, high impact, high heat resistance, low-temperature resistance, approx. CNY 10-11/kg. Injection grade; lighting fixtures, automotive interiors.
Formosa
HP8250, general-purpose, approx. CNY 10-11/kg. Ningbo Formosa; cost-effective; appliances, daily products.
Sinopec Guangzhou (Chinese major)
GH-660, high impact, low-temperature-resistant, high rigidity, approx. CNY 8.8-11/kg. Domestic workhorse; cost-effective; general injection, appliance housings.
In short: general-purpose CNY 8-11, high-impact CNY 10-13, flame-retardant CNY 18-20, food/special CNY 12-18.
2. Why prices differ so much
Four factors: (1) Rubber content — higher rubber means better impact but a higher price; high-impact grades cost 20-30% more than general. (2) Functional modification — flame retardancy, antistatic, UV resistance and food grade all add cost; flame-retardant grades cost about twice the general grade. (3) Flow — high flow suits thin-wall injection and higher processing efficiency, at a higher price. (4) Brand and origin — for the same high-impact grade, Chi Mei costs 20-30% more than Sinopec, paying for quality control and R&D.
3. Procurement pitfalls
The cheapest material often cracks on impact or fails flame-retardant specs, causing returns. Three traps to avoid:
First, test MFI and impact strength against the COA instead of trusting the grade name. Second, watch for substitution: some traders sell GPPS as HIPS or general as flame-retardant; demand the COA, a datasheet and a UL yellow card. Third, calculate total cost: A at CNY 8/kg with a 5% defect rate vs. B at CNY 12/kg with 1% — B is cheaper per part.
4. Standard grades not enough? Consider modified compounds
If you need flame retardancy AND high flow, reinforcement AND antistatic — you need modified HIPS. Ningbo Kolong New Materials is developing high-performance modified HIPS grades covering glass-fiber reinforcement, flame retardancy, antistatic and UV resistance. Message us for a modified HIPS quote reference.
In plain terms: standard grades are a big pot of shared rice; modified compounds are a dish cooked to order.
5. Same-day quotes via message
HIPS prices change daily — crude oil, styrene, butadiene and exchange rates all move. Message us for same-day quotes on specific grades from Chi Mei, BASF, Formosa or Sinopec; real numbers.
Final words
The gap between CNY 8 and CNY 19 is not CNY 11. Unit price is the threshold; choosing the right rubber content and functionality is the baseline. Do the math per part, add rejected-goods loss, and you will know who is truly cheap.
